Bonnets don't work well for me, my curls become wonky. Pineappling stretches my roots & creates tangles. I use a satin scarf (from Amazon) and after several attempts I finally figured out a way to use it that worked for me! Hard to explain but the end result looks as though I'm in a loose buff. This preserves my curl pattern beautifully! Just a tip for those that struggle with bonnets!💜💜💜

I use a satin lined hair buff with a draw string on the top. It's from deeper than hair (they call it a protective headband,) and it's wonderful! Since it is made for black hair with much more volume than my 2c waves/curls, it is a bit looser than I need. I just wear a cotton hair buff on the outside of it. It's cute, and it works, and I cannot recommend it enough!

I do what I call The Lazy Girl's Diffusing Technique: I sleep with a fan on at night so I shower and style my hair, then I sleep with my satin pillow case and just let the fan dry my hair overnight. It also works if you want to take a nap and refresh at the same time 😂

Bonnets have been difficult for me. Most are too big and others are too warm. I'll have to keep searching. I did want to let you know I found the reason I was struggling with the cow lick/weird parting on the back of my head. I was getting conditioner and styling products on my scalp. If I'm super careful I can avoid the problem. Dry shampoo helps when I accidentally get products up to high. I was trying to avoid frizz and I created a new problem. Thank you for your help in covering it while I was figuring it out.

Well I suspected that not diffusing might be the reason I can’t ever manage to refresh….now you’ve confirmed it! I’m going to give it another try. One issue I’ve noticed with some products is that unless they’re applied on really wet hair they get flakey when I try to use them to refresh.
@GenaMarie
@GenaMarie 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! Diffusing is game changing and only takes 5-10 min if your hair isn’t soaked. If your products are flaking then they’re not good products or don’t mix well together

@@GenaMarie “not good products” is a pretty blanket statement. Pretty sure it was from Inahsi and I used it on wash day, but it didn’t work for refreshing. I wouldn’t call it “bad.” Just maybe not the best application. It’s just frustrating that you can’t know that beforehand.

Hi Gena, I’ve been loving your videos! So here’s my situation/question- I typically shower every day just because it helps me feel clean and awake in the mornings (also because I work in an ER and I try to wash off all the scary hospital germs), so my “refresh” routine has been to saturate and detangle my hair in the shower with my fingers every morning, and then wash every other day. By day 3 my hair looks greasy, which is why I wash every other day. Is this routine bad? It seems easier to me than having to put my hair in a shower cap to keep it dry while I’m showering and then have to do a separate refresh after the shower. But maybe doing this every day is stretching out the roots? Any recommendations? Also, I put my hair up in a bun or ponytail when I’m at work or at the gym. How should I be incorporating this into my refresh/wash routine? Thank you so much!! (Also, if it helps with your answer, my hair is relatively undamaged. I’ve been rocking my natural curls for about 10 years and hardly ever use heat. I’ve only dyed it once which was about a year and a half ago and I’ve gotten several haircuts since then.)
@kes6628
@kes6628 3 жыл бұрын
Okay so my question is, realistically how much time and products do you spend doing / on your hair daily? I gave up trying to get my "natural curls" back because it got to a point where the whole curly movement just felt like one big scam to get me to spend $ on hair products. Because I realized I'm not "bringing my natural curls back" I'm literally just styling my hair, and having to retouch that style every day damn near. It was taking up a lot of time and $ and effort just to get my curls. Then if I stopped and just let my hair air dry without all the products and process of "curling" it, I had some minor curls that fell the next day. My curls weren't coming back, I was just styling my hair. maybe I didn't do it long enough, maybe I wasn't consistent enough, wrong products, I don't know. but i gave up. I just don't know what to do for my curls at this point because they're there it just seems like nothing but another 1hr- 1/2 day process daily depending on how instensive / wash day / next day upkeep / etc you're doing that day. :( idk what to do.

On days that I refresh like I did in this video it takes me less than 15 minutes. I don’t always do all of the steps that I showed here I was more so demonstrating the answers to some of the questions. Quick refresh days are 5 minutes. Some days I skip refreshing all together, especially on day two when the curls still look ok because I use a strong hold gel on wash day. It’s only on weekend wash days, once a week, when I spend longer on my hair (clarifying, deep conditioning, etc.) because I actually enjoy it like self care. I totally understand how it might feel like a lot of work and products, but most natural curls needed the help of styling products to reduce frizz and hold their pattern. Some people may choose to rock product-free curls but most like the look with products better. If you use good quality, strong hold products and your hair is healthy, they should hold up longer than a day and only need minor touch ups to refresh. It took me almost 4 years to fully transition my curls and get them back to a healthy state where they look good and don’t have heat or bleach damage. I wasn’t making any progress when I was still going back-and-forth from straightening to wearing it curly. I hope that helps! 💕

It seems that your hair is too different than mine. I couldn’t pull down my hair like that or I’d pull the curl out because I’m a 2C/3A. And your hair is very coily. I’m not sure if watching someone with my hair type would be better, or if the same thing applies to all hair types. My curls look pretty good in the morning and then I get in my hot tub to loosen my bones (autoimmune disease) and it’s like starting over! My hair gets wet and it’s like day one again😬😁
@lhut5622
@lhut5622 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. If you get your hair soaking wet you have to restyle it. I think Gena covers tips universal to all hair. My hair is curlier, but I still find the info to be useful. On the other hand, I gravitate towards KZfaqrs with very similar curly type because it's simply more applicable. There are universal facts, but I think 2,3, &4 hair should be cared for differently. It's not just about curl pattern though, it's also about density and porosity. Knowing your density and porosity will help you better identify how to care for your hair.

Either! Satin is a synthetic material and cheaper. Silk is higher quality and softer in feel. I find that satin is more slippery actually, which reduces friction/frizz.

What do you do to address the mildew smell that happens in those spray bottles? I have that problem even when I empty the bottle after every use and spray the handle until there is no more water in the nozzle. It still smells of mildew the next time I use it and it takes several sprays until the mildew smell is gone. Thanks.

I empty mine and refill it before using so its always fresh water and have never had smell issues that way. Even better, you could also empty it after using it, and then spray it a few times until the water is out so the water is not sitting for days.

You have beautiful hair; however, the refresher seems to take longer than just rewashing and redoing the whole head. Am I missing something?
@GenaMarie
@GenaMarie 3 жыл бұрын
I usually refresh in 5 min for an easy refresh, and max 20 minutes for a full refresh. Wash day takes me much longer because I have to detangle, shampoo, deep condition, and it takes longer to dry because it's wet all the way down to the root. When I refresh, I can diffuse in under 5 minutes because it's not soaked.

@GenaMarie

Do you find that you have little to no hold on wash day, resulting in frizz? When we refresh, we're adding a layer of product (gel) on damp hair which gives us added frizz protection and additional hold. I discuss this more in my recent video about How to Get Stronger Hold: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNl-rKqiuai7fqs.html
