My first Schutzhund experience was in the late 1970’s. I had a Doberman who was genetically programmed to work. The first trainer I took him to exposed me to the sport, but when he saw that the dog had some potential, he evidently felt threatened and did everything he could to discourage me from participating. Forty + years later I am still here, still learning.

@maligatormom you actually helped me to pick my malinois X malamute, partly cos I can't afford a full breed & whilst an unusual/undesirable mix for most, for me, it'll work because I plan to do scent work (malinois) & he can sled some of my equipment for experiments to remote places (malamute & environmental science) and I am a mum of 2 as well. I just do things more on a budget because I have to, but doesn't mean I don't care, just means I have to do things myself, I'm good with basic vet skills, had gsds before but hip dysplasia puts me off getting another as my last went at just 6 from it & had a collie X spaniel after so I thought a Mal would suit me, my experience & needs/wants from the dog. You helped my decision & showed me what I was in for. Thank you, I love my boy but he's tough at times. Maligator is definitely correct! Home being as he is has pulled me out of my PTSD too as it wasn't helping him & he needed me to be stronger & a leader. I am also a petite, blonde woman with kids too, I know the bs all to well despite being a mechanic & growing up around horses & also experience the elitism too. Once I have a dog it's for life anyway 🙂 I couldn't get a rescue because if kids & lacking a 6ft fence, despite experience.

my opinion for gatekeepers....majority of people will totally underestimate the breed.....arrogance definitely plays a roll in the gatekeeping. By same token..I know what this breed is and told myself I would never have one because of the level of commitment and skill needed in making it work. Then a situation popped upped where BM was in a limited place....confined long hours, so impulse nature kicks in and let the games begin. 18 month old....bigger dog....80lb's+/-....does come from working line....I pretty much put my life on hold until I got up to speed(certain level). Dog is more capable then I am, but he is golden. This is extremely complicated...will say KZfaq helps tremendously,,,,MaligatorMom, Robert Cabral, Larry Krohn, Beckman and assorted others....I look at as much as I can.....trying to catch up to capabilities of my furry companion. It has been a life changing event (but game not yet done)....for the better. Best to all...

I went to Belgian Tervurens after having had GSD's & working in the veterinary field. I wanted the most healthy herding dog that had grit, intelligence & a sense of humor. I found F.E.T. = Fur, Energy, Teeth! Bel-Tervs!! Mals, Groens, Lakes.

Well...interesting comments about an unwelcoming community. I got a GSD and tried to find a training club and that was really hard. If people had support in developing the dog they would havea better chance at doing well.
