Because a Probat roaster and a Chinese Wok are used to prepare different types of food....however, your coffee roaster and my $16 popcorn popper BOTH do a fine job of roasting coffee!

I've had mine for about a year now. Do about one roast a week and I'm very happy with my Gene Cafe. Know I'm drinking some of the best coffee in my county, if not the best.

Had this roaster for two years now. It is perfect! Super control, very quiet and compared to my previous roaster it is in a different class,(That was a noisy Iroast II) Thumbs up from me for this one :)

I presently roast mine in a large very thick frying pan, and they turn out fine. However I am going to buy a Gene Roaster after reading the comments here & elsewhere!

How much for 1 piece of it?

Why spend the money for this when a $16 popcorn popper from Target (Chefmate) works great??

"Just flat out roasting everything to the same color in around 5 minutes" is NOT my approach. Even with the popcorn popper you have to listen for that "second pop" and closely observe the roast color and glossiness...and stop the roast right at the right time...takes some practice. WORKS GREAT FOR $16.

wow, you're really convinced that a popper can do it all, aren't you? I don't doubt that a popper can roast coffee, but just flat out roasting everything to the same colour in around 5 minutes is not the approach I, as a Gene user, am looking for. Personally, want more control so that I can roast each bean in the way best suited to it and hopefully enjoy some of the spectrum of flavour that the farmer and processors worked so hard to create. or am i just trying to talk sense to a troll?

"Don't buy a Gene!" Exactly my point for all the people reading this.

as can a wok. Sure you can roast in a popper, but not with the volume or control of a Gene. If you don't want a Gene and like your popper better, then good for you. Don't buy a Gene!

*sigh* i'm not here to get into a pissing contest with you about this. Roasting with a popper works great, is no doubt a lot of fun and is a valid way of roasting coffee for many people. So is the Gene cafe. So is a hottop, a behmor, a corretto, a dog bowl and heat gun and a wok on the stove. Coffee is a big world with room for lots of different ideas and tools for us ALL to enjoy. Don't be down on how other people enjoy their coffee, its not cool. That's really all I'm trying to say.
