Yes, when he caught the first, he was triumphant, but he graciously conceded when the other fella obviously caught the bigger one. He still had his smile :)

When I found out such a show existed, I found this clip in a YT compilation. His name wasn’t listed in the description but in the middle, there he was! It was nice to see him in a different context enjoying himself :)

@@mostlydaydreaming2983 Around October I bought a very rare 16mm reel of this episode with Gene on it. No print of it was thought to exist so it was exciting to find. The rest of Gene's segment also includes a fossil hunt with Richard Leakey as well as a bit more footage of the fishing expedition. Since it's a b/w reel from that time it had some jumping and such but the transfer was done by a great person I use and it looks very good even though it's not the color version that this clip is. It's difficult to watch animals being hurt like this. The first part of the episode is an awful raccoon hunt. The American Sportsman was an egregious show and it is difficult to see Gene be a part of it but his grace and charm win out so much that it's still a pleasure to see him in this way.

@@elissa8888 I’d like to see the rest of it. The fishing doesn’t bother me since I used to do that with my father and now with my husband. I can’t hunt though I understand not everybody can just gets their food from the freezer section :)

@@mostlydaydreaming2983 Yes, I want to definitely share it. The entire segment is really great to see. I tried to upload it but I need to have it start at Gene's segment and not include the raccoon hunt, which is the first one. I couldn't find anyway to take that out. The show runs 27 minutes and Gene's part starts at 11:30 and runs to the end. I can upload it with the raccoon hunt but I'd really like that to be edited out. Any suggestions? My friend and I were thrilled when I found it. She'd been looking everywhere for it but it didn't exist anywhere until I found the 16mm. Could you tell me where the compilation is that you found this clip on?

@@elissa8888 There are a lot of ways to edit it down. I can do it on my phone. I think you can even edit it on YT itself. I found the compilation on YT. Once I knew that show existed, I started skimming thru YT videos and found it. The hunt wouldn’t bother me but if you’d rather not post it, look up YTs instructions for editing videos. Thank you for sharing :)
