That is such a treasure to have those gravestones still in place! In Germany you "buy" a burial ground just for 25 years or for 50 years at the most. After that time the family has to pay for the removal of the stone and the ground will be prepared for the next burial. The stone will get destroyed. There are only a few old stones on our local cemetery that were so beautiful or historically important that the stones were placed in a circle near the chaple but not on the original graveside.

I have heard of this. This so sad, but I get it when you don't have space. Too bad no one thought to photograph them before they were destroyed.

My Ancestor, Peter Guth died in the 1600s and his grave still stands in Germany. It amazes me to see graves that a so old.

I love Findagrave and Billiongraves but I absolutely HATE IT when people only lists the cemetery, but don’t list the spot inside the cemetery. I DONT HAVE ALL DAY TO LOOK AT EVERY GRAVE IN A CEMETERY IN ORDER TO FIND MY ANCESTOR.

Since this is a volunteer created endeavor, I'm not entirely sure where the initial information for the different profiles appear and thus skipped for inclusion on the profiles.

My 2nd ggf is buried, according to Find A Grave, in Troy, OH. He died in 1901 in Lost Creek Twp, Miami County, where he and ggm show up in the 1900 census. This man is such a total mystery in my tree. I only have him for sure in one census, can't find birth cert, parents, marriage license, obit, etc, etc. He is buried with most of his in-laws, strange - right? GGM remarried and I know where she is. I was thinking about a trip to Troy this fall - TX to OH - just to see if they have any info that will help. Thanks for the tips.

Perhaps there was a big disaster in the region that his parents died of or he with his in-laws? Perhaps he was raised by them and married their daughter? My mind is spinning trying to find possible explanations. Searching for family history is so exiting.

It's also possible that the couple didn't have much money and the in-laws had a spot open for burial.

What do you do when the funeral home is no more, the funeral home that bought the old one only has archives that start decades later and no one around knows where the person is buried?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics

You note that in your research program. Then, check to see if state or county archives have the funeral home records. If they do not, then you pray the records turn up someday in the future. Sadly, MANY cemetery managers wish they had records from the past but preservation was not a top priority for their location.

I was led to understand that the reason for fences and walls around cemeteries is because people are just dying to get in.
