Great video. I found a whole bunch of newspaper articles on a few of my ancestors, and saved them to my computer. I also shared them with my family in our Facebook group. I ended up finding an article on one of my 3rd g-grandmothers who I've never seen a picture of before. Not only was there an article on her and her life, there was also a picture of her too. I was pretty excited and thrilled to have found that article. Another article I found that kind of made me chuckle was about my 2nd g-grandmother Florina. She ended up basically eloping and keeping the marriage a secret from her parents. According to the article, her parents were in an uproar about it when she came home and told them the news. She was young, and also was 7 months pregnant when she got married. The man she married was a few years older than her and her parents did not like him. Needless to say, her parent's intuition was right because her husband ended up abandoning her and her two daughters and took off to Seattle Washington. Stuff like that also happens in today's century. Funny how human behavior has not changed through the course of life.

A close friend of my parents worked for the local paper in the late 40s and 50s i have found so many 'blurbs' from visiting - aunts & uncle in Long Island all mentioned by name to when my sister broke her ankle hiking up the mountain- love newspaper research

For anyone doing Australian research, Trove is a great free resource for national newspapers (up to about 1950). For Kiwi research, the Papers Past website is great for New Zealand newspaper content.

Love using newspapers.com - it's how I found the solution to a 15 year brickwall, by finding an obituary. Your videos are always so good and informative. Also search by various spellings. For instance William might be "Wm." That's how I found the obituary that solved my brickwall.

Use nicknames also...what they may have gone by. Ex: William - Bill, Billy, Will, Willy, etc. I have an ancestor, Michael Gerard are first and middle names. But, Beau was his nickname. He’s in the paper several times as Beau.

I love clipping and saving to my ancestry trees but I often find that the clippings are too fuzzy to read on Ancestry. I save the link so if the clip is fuzzy anyone can find the article through the link if they have a subscription.

My daughter is our genealogy hound. She found clippings of my deceased brother's high school basketball sports team and how many points he scored in some of his games, especially during his senior year! Then she also found a LOT on my 2x great grandfather. I had always heard he was a warden at our local federal penitentiary. She found out he was a county sheriff before coming assistant warden. And became acting warden for about a year and a half after the main warden was ousted by the governor under allegations of showing favor to certain inmates, mishandling of funds, etc.

I don't know if you mentioned this or not (I cannot remember). But it's important that sometimes 1) females are not named in older articles...it's usually listed under husband 2) sometimes the search doesn't always pick up what you're searching for and sometimes you have to go a "back way" 1 of 2 back way-search for another name related to family. Say Mrs Smith, married a Smith but her surname was Sullivan...is Smith doesn't pick it up, maybe Sullivan will because most likely it'll mention parents of deceased, etc. The other backway is if the obit doesn't come up, sometimes it just easier to scan the papers shortly after the death date, as I notice sometimes the search doesn't pick it up. Say you know the person died in Chicago, on May 29, 1946...sometimes you're able to spot it if you look at May 30, June 1, June 2, etc. And you can do that by clicking on the newspaper name and then at the top of the page layout and there should be an arrow icon to take you back to the list of dates. Keep in mind, that older times-sometimes the death notice will not be printed for a week +. Hopefully that made sense.

Great information. I have one quick question. If I add a clipping from Newspapers (from either the basic subscription or Publisher's Extra) to my tree in Ancestry, can others that don't have a subscription to Newspapers see the clipping. Thank you.

Yes. If you add a Newspaper.com clipping to your tree, anyone who clicks on the clipping will have access to view it regardless of whether they have a Newspapers subscription or not.

The best thing I ever did after inscribing to Ancestry.com was to subscribe to newspapers.com and a few others that have newspapers available. TONS of new, more detailed, life event information! Solved a many brick walls or helping me break them down. Waiting on some other date availability. One issue and tip: Don’t totally rely on OCT search. Unfortunately items are missed especially if print is not good. I don’t know why, also seems to miss some names more than others. Ex: I know a marriage was in the paper. I have it already from newspapers.com. However, one name was searched and found. The other name was not. Even the title “MARRIED” was missed in search. Even using “find” on the actual page could only find the one name and nothing else in the article. Love it but once you narrow down to a timeframe, browse the papers if search doesn’t find. OCT needs some improvements. Not just this site but all sites using OCT.

Good rule of thumb is pay attention to profession. If they had a high profile job or civil office (commissioner, mayor, policeman, fireman) you can use those as key words. Narrowed down My policeman 2x great grandfather that way

Thanks -- I found this very useful! I do not have a membership to newspapers.com but I am about to get one. My question is, once we find clippings and save them to our ancestry page, does it remain available even if we later cancel the newspaper.com membership? I would save everything to the computer, but it would save a step if I didn't have to then reupload the clipping later.

Yes. Clippings are available to users even after their Newspapers subscription expires.

Newspapers.com has more than 50 years of newspapers from San Juan (Gazeta de Puerto-Rico).

I have loved using newspapers.com in the past! My only complaint was that I couldn't do a Boolean search or use wild cards. Is that still true?

I have successfully used both wildcard (* and ?) and Boolean searches (- this word, for example) on Newspapers.

I was able to find the death date (and hopefully this will lead me to a death certificate) for a brick wall ancestor due to his suicide making it into the papers in his state/surrounding states. Not a happy event but genealogically significant.

I want to find early obituaries 1860-1900 in my county. Not by name, and not my ancestors. I used to be able to do this but now it wont. I enter a date range for the local paper and enter search words like "death, died, obituary" and nothing. I have a $69/6 mo subscription. Not getting my money's worth. I have found unmarked burials in Marshall county, Indiana before the death certificates came out in 1900. Now I can't. What changed?

Do you have the Ancestry All-Access subscription? If so, contact Newspapers.com and they will get you the information you need to access the site. If you do not have an All-Access subscription at Ancestry, you can contact Newspapers.com to let them know you are an Ancestry subscriber and request any current discounts available.

Here is what Newspapers.com responded to my inquiry: "If you do not have the ALL-ACCESS with Ancestry.com, you do not have a subscription to Newspapers.com included."So if you have World Explorer membership you don't have access to Newspapers and you need to pay. Disappointing.

@@mdagmjr You may have found a solution to this by now, but just in case....You can subscribe to newspaper.com directly and not through ancestry.com website. An ancestry.com subscription is not required at all. Subscribing through ancestry.com only gives you the basic level subscription at newspapers.com so it's best to just subscribe and pay for highest level subscription directly on newspaper.com to get access to ALL the newspapers on their their site. Articles can still be easily clipped and saved to ancestry.com from newspapers.com; when you clip an article, options will pop up and one will be option to save to ancestry. This may all be here in Crista's video; it's been awhile since I've watched this one. I've found some really cool info about many family members on newspapers.com that I may never have found elsewhere. :D
