Just wanted to let you know that after watching this video, I searched newspapers for records or articles of my grandfathers time as a merchant mariner. Instead I found multiple articles of him assaulting someone when he was a very young adult and was actually sentenced to time in a reformatory. Obviously a part of his life that he never told us of and must have really been hard. I very big shock and hard to come to terms with but thank you for reminding us of all the ways that we can find more about our lost ancestors!

I love looking and finding the marriage announcements. One the same page, generally, there are advertisements showing bridal wear or florists, which I love looking at. If there are no photos of relatives on that page, I imagine bride's dresses that my relatives were aware of at the time. Maybe she even wore it! Oh how wonderful!

Great video, full of good tips, examples, and inspiration! I love newspaper research. It's helped me to find wonderful information about many ancestors. For example, I discovered lots of mentions of my paternal grandfather over the years, in his role as a police officer and also as a musician/band leader, as well as his service in WWI. Much uplifting info, some sad, all informative in helping me to understand him and to have an idea of my dad's experiences in this family. I especially enjoyed discovering newspaper ads for my Grandpa's gigs with his Irish band.I am going to try printing and framing some!

Thank you, this made me more aware of how to use this site, of which I subscribe to. Q: Why is this site so incomplete? Portland, Oregon and Little Rock, Ark. are but two places that are lacking in papers. Q: When done with her full story, do I need to include a biblio with each and every article? There are no less than 350 articles with her name plus well over 1000 articles I have used to gather more info. Or, can I simply put that I accessed this website as a secondary source, without listing each article?

I have started using newspaper in the last few weeks because of a hint on Ancestry. I have also found us, yes me to at 10 months old, in city directories.

Found this to be very interesting, I am behind in my articles, So doing some catch up. Question I love newspapers and today our "local" paper is in Philadelphia about thirty miles from here, not many local stories. How will my family find things after I am gone about my contemporaries? Facebook? Just curious. Thanks for this great video.

I think it won't matter as much where it is online because search engines like Google and Duck Duck Go can find just about anything as long as it's a publicly available web page. If your Facebook is "friends only" then others down the road won't typically have access in theory.

Where I struggle is when an ancestor has several relatives who were born in the same region and time frame. I find people choose randomly any of the bunch to put in their family tree. It took me three years to find my paternal great grandma. I tried several. Finally, all the DNA started matching and I knew I got the right one. There wasn't enough online info initially to get the correct one. Partly, because during the timeframe she was born, birth records in the region in Canada were not required in the church or government in her region. there were at least 3 others of her name who married a man with the same name as her husband. It wasn't until adding her siblings and children in all three with her name, and all their get, that the DNA began matching. Is there anyway to get through this process easier and faster. I looked at every article and document.

There will always be ancestors that take large amounts of time to tease apart from others who share their name. Thankfully it's balanced by those that are quick and straightforward. Hang in there!
