I lived in Mexico for six years and adored every minute. Unfortunately, I had to return to Canada because of cancer. I built my own home, made wonderful friends, and was accepted into the well established artist community. It's an incredible country and a beautiful way of life. I miss it terribly.

@@alittleofthisandthat8003 I moved back to Canada for health care because, as a senior in a low income bracket, all my treatment, medication etc. is covered here. Yes, Mexico has great physicians, however I would have had to pay, and I could not afford it.

Good approach to living in a special country. I am living nearly full time in Oaxaca - I feel alive here. I was very happy to finally get my permanent residency. Just walking around to get coffee is a diversion. I have never had any issues. I have been warned by local friends of areas and actions that could be dangerous so I follow their advice. I left my expensive phone in a sidewalk cafe - when I came back 30 minutes later, the waitress rushed to give it back to me. My company had me in Los Angeles for 2 years - I felt more at risk in LA than in Mexico. Thanks for the video. I just subscribed!

Wow!! I loved your video! You got right to the point. I'm an American who built a home in San Luis Potosi and recently bought a finca in Mexico. I'm so tired of people asking me aren't you afraid you will be killed in Mexico?! No I'm not. I live in Downtown Los Angeles where people are murdered every day and where children and families are run over by cars. At my son's elementary his friend was stabbed in back with a knife . At my others sons junior high someone was shot in face while standing in lunch line. What about the mass school shootings? I feel much safer at my vacation homes in Mexico and hopefully will be able to live there permanently soon.

Where did he get right to the point ?? I watched whole video and he never once said anything about did he make a mistake moving to Mexico. That was the reason I watched it in the first place , I wanted to know what happened that they are second guessing their decision. Look at the way he’s holding his head and the title of the video , he never got to the point. Just said how good it was , nothing negative.

We have definitely enjoyed our time here. As you explore the area you may move to: watch lots of videos on that area; and subscribe to expat groups on Facebook in that city and hear what they’re saying. And as I always say, don’t buy drugs or illegal substances, don’t sell them, don’t ask about them, don’t go to bars late at night. Those same apply to the USA. When you settle on a location fly down and do a vacation there to be sure it’s the right fit before moving all the way there. Best of luck to you as you explore your options! I’m a woman solo traveler and have been to places where people questioned my sanity such as Egypt and Iraq. Yes, we must always use wisdom and NOT ignore the travel warnings given to us because they are there for a reason. I do not live my life in fear and will enjoy my life to its fullest by discovering the beauty this planet has to offer. I don’t want to wait until retirement age to do it. Just a side note, you don’t have to live a life of crime to be a victim of it.

I have lived in Mexico for 14 years, now a permanent resident. I will be getting my Mexican Citizenship this summer,. Mexico Changed my life in ways I cannot express. The Kindness and warmth of the Mexican people, The celebrations of Culture are among the top. Of course the cost of living here is 70% less than where I came from in California. I live in northern Nayarit away from the hustle and bustle of larger towns which is my preference. I live on the beach in a town of 800 people. I have never once felt or have been treated as an outsider. My opinion is important when I attend town meetings and I try to participate as much as possible in local events. I cant see me returning to the US on a permanent basis due to the hateful environment, and a completely non functioning government. I'm proud to be an American but our country has clearly lost its way in so many ways. If you do choose to relocate here you MUST embrace Mexico with a non judgmental attitude. Things move at a slower pace here you might be without power for a day or 2, may take a week to get the phone company out to repair and you can order online bur expect it taking 2 weeks in most places to get to you. That caused much frustration when I first moved here always comparing it to home. Took me about 1 year to cleanse myself of that attitude. I am so grateful for Mexico giving me such a kind place to call home. Could not wich for more. You will love San Miguel, I visited allot when I lived in Guanajuato for 1 year. Saludos Amigos !

I still miss Mexico though, a country which I visited and stayed in for long periods in the sixties and seventies. Of course, I am aware that the Mexico I once knew, extremely safe, mainly rural, zero narco problems, and amazingly cheap, no longer exists. That is the same for any place where you lived years before and try to go back and relive a situation that only exists in your memories. You made a great decision though in moving to Mexico. I too am very happy with my decision to remain in Portugal, one of the safest and most stable countries in the world. I do miss those tropical beaches, the frendly people, and that incredible food though.

I just subscribed. Hi Gene, I watched your video today expecting a different narrative and was so pleased with your positive report of Mexico. Years ago my husband and I visited Mexico at least once a year. We have driven Baja twice, traveling down the west coast of the mainland, taking the ferry from Topolobampo to La Paz, visiting Los Cabos and driving back to California. We always had wonderful trips. Once in Cabo while shopping for snacks and ice in a little roadside grocery, I left my expensive camera on the hood of our car and returned to find two Mexican men guarding it for me. In the U.S. my camera probably would have disappeared. Current news by the American press of cartel shootings and vacationers being drugged in hotel bars, etc., has made us apprehensive about travel in Mexico. Your report is so reassuring and heart warming. Also, as you rightly point out, if I am worried about violence I better stay away from the local grocery, fast food restaurant, or theater in my home town because I am more likely to encounter violence there than most other places in the world. I look forward to your sojourn in San Miguel de Allende. Buen viaje!

@@GeneandRenee You may be living in what would be $6-700,000 residence back home although it's not worth that much in Mexico. Real Estate is a local market and I have been in overseas locations where they hear us telling that we usually pay higher prices and that is what we'll get eventually. Don't want Gringo prices. When I'm overseas I pay local prices and never refer to prices back home.

We too call Bucerias home since 2019. Another example of the honesty here is that I keep my fishing rods and tackle on my boat in the harbor in La Cruz when my boat is there and have never had anything stolen from it. In the San Francisco Bay area where I was born and raised you can't even be sure your windows won't be broken out just parking at a local boat harbor.

Show up Grey Haired Frail your a target, stay inside at night, double lock your doors bars on your windows and doors outside lights on camera Security system on… basically FORTIFIED home. Do as your mommy told you as a kid “ don’t talk to strangers “. Don’t think anyone is here to be your friend as your disposable. Crack Cocaine Meth etc.. takes a 13 year old Mexican Kid turns them into killer in minutes if not seconds, those gold fillings you have or dentures are worth $$$ pesos on the street… remember a Mexican Junky lives from Drug hit to Drug hit and your the in between hits payday!! It doesn’t matter if your on the beach, sitting at a restaurant, on your bicycle your touchable.

I've been to even the most notorious cities in Mexico for cartel violence and I kept to myself and enjoyed shopping and hanging out with friends and not one time did we experience any sort of danger from cartels or gangs. Every country or region, has its own dose of risk, social/economic issues. Mexico is not an exception; but when you let big lies, alienation, moral superiority, hate, etc.. take over; you deprive yourself of an amazing experience of getting to know another culture without fear. After hearing so many good things about Mexico, and how affordable the life is, I finally visited and went to Jalisco. I loved the landscapes and the people, but the harsh reality is that is not as cheap as many KZfaqrs claim. In fact, I ended up spending just a little less than in LA, which is one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. The food is better, but not as good as I would have expected. I had much better food while in Europe, and in many parts it was cheaper. The overall quality in Mexico is OK, but don't expect to go there and find the promised land. There are some hospitals where you wouldn't step in even if they would pay you, and there are others that instead look good. So, it's a mixed bag and it makes sense as Mexico is dealing with its own past while moving forward (at a reasonably fast speed) toward a more advanced future. Whether this will mean the dawn of their heritage in favour of a Westernized culture is yet to be seen. I truly wish them the best, it's a fascinating culture, with beautiful cultural treasures.

I just subscribed. Nice to heare a calm, rational and balanced discussion of México. Thanks especially for your extended comments on crime and violence, or more accurately, the general lack of it. I would sure like to hear more about locations which are NOT big ex-pat centers, where one out of necessity has to live among the wonderful Mexican people, rather than in a gated community surrounded by other Americans and/or Canadians. In my humble opinion, these are the true gems of México, for those willing to learn a modicum of Spanish. And they are far more affordable than the ex-pat enclaves such as Puerta Vallarta and San Miguel de Allende.

Thank you Peter for subscribing to our channel and for joining us on the journey. Van-life on O’ahu….man I’m jealous!!! Don’t have a clue of how to help. I’m sure it will be very expensive to get the van across the water. Look into what your Temporary Import Permit will cost but realize that it’s doubtful you’ll get it back when you travel to the U.S. They say that you will, and some people seem to get it, but I’m still waiting on mine. I just consider it a “tax.” Other thoughts that I’m sure you already know, travel during the daytime and as much as possible on toll roads. Other than that I’m at a loss as to how informative I can be. Sorry my friend. Peter we do appreciate you watching our videos and hope that you’re enjoying an awesome week! 😎

I just subscribed!. I just retired. Raised in Central America, I speak Spanish w fluency. My impression of Mexico? Magical, driving through from Minnesota to Central America. I dream of returning to a Latin American country. No desire to join a beach condo community.Or recreate US lifestyle there. I would love a big old fashioned fridge..non tech. Dw, washer dryer.old fashion. Dated. I really appreciate your demeanor. The Best most heroic noble hero boyfriend I had was from Jalisco. Decades ago. Great experience that strengthened me for Life. My coworkers (from Guadalajara) had my back for 20 years. I love and cherish Mexican people. Respectful. Resourceful. Ethical. Sharp keen creative problem solving minds. Capable hands. Honest hearts.

Thank you for sharing! I live in Las Vegas Nevada and in a relatively safe area, yet there are gun shots, and break ins around town, lots of accidents from the crazy drivers etc. I have been researching Puerto Vallarta and Bucerias. The people are wonderful in Mexico! New here just subscribed to your channel!

I just subscribed. Great video! Are you learning Spanish while in Mexico? I am a single woman over 60 what challenges might I expect if following your example? I so agree it drives me a little crazy when I hear US citizens talking about how unsafe it is to travel to Mexico. It's May 2022 and there have been well over 150 mass shootings in the US and there are more guns than people.

Susan, thank you for subscribing to our channel and watching our videos. We appreciate you! We are trying to learn Spanish but for us it is a very slow process. The locals are very kind and appreciative when you are at least trying. As for a single woman I personally would not suggest that you drive alone but that you fly. I would also suggest a city like Puerto Vallarta where you could be around a lot of other expats. We just got into San Miguel de Allende a week ago and this may be another option for you. Hopefully as we post more videos you will discover the answer to that question. Thanks again for subscribing, have a wonderful day! 😎

A most pleasant introduction. I found it to be true about US news regarding troubles in foreign countries. I lived in Japan. The "riots" in fact, were a small calm group of protesters (about 50) in Tokyo while I walked to my classes. I'm looking forward to your videos.

I was born in Mexico City and my wife is from Trinidad and Tobago. I just turned 51 and when we retire, we are going to move to Mexico permanently. Gun violence, school shootings, political craziness and cost of living in the U.S is just out of control. It's a shame what has happened to the U.S. I thank you for your honest review of Mexico. Most Americans think very low of Mexicans and believe they are lazy and dirty. They don't realize how beautiful Mexico truly is.

Al I appreciate your kind words. Mexico is a beautiful country and 99.9% of the people are kind, gracious, and very welcoming. I agree that what’s happened to the USA is terrible and I only hope they can reverse this and return to the country they were 80 years ago. We wish you and your wife the very best as you think ahead to retirement. Thank you for watching our videos and joining us on the journey! 🙂

There is also crime and more corruption in Mexico, don't kid yourself. Los Angeles and other big cities do have crime, but live in smaller cities like simi valley, CA

I lived in Mex for 3 years. I can tell you the countdown has already started for the "Why We Left Mexico" video to drop. The endless layer upon layer of corruption and dysfunction in every aspect of society will quickly exhaust your patience and eventually threaten your personal safety. The dream has already started to die... it's just a matter of time.

@@locolalo1364 What? If the cops are corrupt, they extort you. There were three bodies hanging from the overpass a half mile from our house. A month later our neighbors son was kidnapped. What the hell are you talking about bureaucracy? It's a third world sh*thole run by drug gangs.

Wealthier Mexicans aren’t. The majority are from Central America. Those from Mexico who are trying to get to the USA are doing so for work. If they can work in the USA for 10-15 years they’d be able to go back to Mexico and retire very well. Thanks for watching! Hope you had a great weekend! 🙂

@@GeneandRenee They're not coming here to work, why would they? When they get free housing/hotel, an Obama phone, free meals. All the new hires at work aren't immigrants, they're nowhere to be found. They want em to take all the laboring jobs but it back fired on them.

Hello! We just took on a palapa in Yelapa. We've been stressing about getting our three large dogs down there from the east coast, especially as we'll have to do the trip every six months during the reno. It would be wonderful if you would do a video on the logistics of getting from Virginia Beach to PV with a dog.
