In this new series, I will be researching the family trees of fellow youtubers and showing the process as I go along. This series will be a tutorial on how to do genealogy research while also highlighting the interesting ancestral history of your favorite youtubers. This second season will feature Mr. Beat, whose channel focuses on history, politics, geography, and other topics related to social studies. In the first few episodes of this season, I will be building Mr. Beat's family tree using only DNA.
This third episode will focus on using ThruLines on Ancestry, connecting Mr. Beat's family tree to the World Family Tree on geni.com, using the family tree tools on DNA painter, and using DNA painter itself! Of course, this episode also includes how Mr. Beat is related to his top 5 historical figures (not including Presidents), GeneaVlogger, and Mr. Beat's top 10 presidents.

Thru-lines has been one of my favorite things. I love that I’ve been able to use the dna to answer genealogical questions. The research is so much fun. (My Elmore family genealogy is pretty deeply built out due to work before the internet.) My holy grail is info on my 2nd great grandmother on my paternal side (up the Elmore branch, married to Charles Elmore)- all of the extensive family genealogical research fails to give the info on her line. Some day, I will discover the info needed to solve this mystery.

I've actually been doing something similar where, in my free time, I'll do genealogy for celebrities - but this is on a whole new level! Using DNA results in a sort of detective style is really fun and I'm glad to see you're getting recognition for it. Also, as someone from the Research Triangle myself, it's nice to see us getting some representation. Thanks for the great vid!

@@GeneaVlogger Still, it's like a family trees builder for very lazy genealogists, isn't it ?
@GeneaVlogger
@GeneaVlogger 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you use it. If you just find trees built by others on other platforms and transfer it in without verifying anything, that would be a very lazy genealogist. But if you build a documented tree on another platform which you then want to transfer to Geni, it is cleaner way to put it on Geni than just uploading a Gedcom. So it certainly can be abused easily but when used properly it can be extremely helpful in properly transferring the tree.

I'm very lucky on my Great Grandfather's side had a paper trail. His Grandfather name is Orison Scribner Smith Sr. and his middle name was a surname. Orison Sr.'s Grandfather is John Scribner he married Thankful Shaw on September 21, 1815 in Augusta, Maine. Orison Sr. name both his sons Artemus Shaw Smith and Orison Scribner Smith Jr. John Scribner is part of the Scribner Family of New Hampshire Thankful Shaw is a descendant of Peter Grant he was a Scottish Prisoner Of War. He fought at the Battle of Dunbar on September 3, 1650. Sailed on the ship the Unity that arrived in Massachusetts in late December of 1650 and he was sold to the Saugus Iron Works in Saugus, Massachusetts as a slave laborer.

Wow - info rich and great demos. I'll be studying this as I have both Ancestry and Geni but did not know how to connect them. I am still a bit fuzzy on how much of an ancestry tree to connect to the Geni tree. Also, a cousin has become the manager of my mother's side of the family but has entered quite a bit of incorrect information. I've contacted her each time I see an error but there are plenty remaining. Can I correct them when doing the side by side comparison? I'll be studying the info in this video for quite a while. Thank you!

All of this has been incredibly interesting and I'm saving the vid to refer back to with working on my own tree. I've not long ago started using Thrulines and omg they're revolutionary when working out DNA matches and how they fit in your tree. The biggest issue I run into is people not having a linked tree or any tree on there Ancestry, that can be slightly frustrating and disappointing, my strongest DNA match is someone with only 12 people in their tree and who hasn't been on their account in almost a year. I can't even guess at how they're linked with what information they have available. I like that in some cases Thrulines will suggest connections but, as you said, you definitely have to take it with a grain of salt until you can varify it. I've come across too many to count where people have copied info from another tree which had copied from another tree etc and none of them have any records or sources for the information. In some cases it's obvious a mistake has been made like when you have a 55 year old woman having a baby in the 18th century, when they seem to already have a daughter and/or niece with the same name as them who is more likely to be the mother. And other times it can be impossible to tell that a mistake has been made until you dig deeper and even then you might not be able to figure it out..., sometimes even the original parish records (most of my research is in England, other places may be different) can't help untangle it when you have multiple generations and cousins all sharing common name, it can be near impossible to work out who was who when it comes to marriages and deaths because they didn't always put parents names (before standard marriage licenses) and didn't usually use mother's maiden names on baptisms. Sometimes you might get lucky, I had the unusual experience of finding a baptism from 1790s for an illegitimate child listed both parents, very useful because she had a fairly common name for the area. So, yeah, I always look to varify any of the suggested connections on Thrulines with the records, especially when people have a person in their tree without any records attactched at all. As an aside...I know the pronunciation with some UK place names can be a little unexpected if you're from outside of the UK, so... "Gloucester" is pronounced "Gloster". When it comes to the -shire, instead of it being shy-er like you might expect (especially if you're a LOTR fan) it's more like shuh (though it can depend where in England you're from and what your accent is like because my dad was from Wiltshire and they pronounced it more like shur, and I think that's more inline with places in the west-south west of England, places like Gloucestershire, Wiltshire & Somerset). I hope that makes sense. I was watchin a vid recently and the woman said that some of these places, when pronouncing them, it's like you give up half way through, which is both hilarious and kinda true lol, places like Gloustershire, but also Worcestershire = Wostershuh and Bicester = Bister, I'm sure there are others but can't think of them off the top of my head.

This is so cool! I found out that I am related to George Washington. He is my 1st cousin 9x removed. A relative of his, Elizabeth Washington married A keith whose family married into my mom's mom side of the family. And apparently I am related to the first governor if Massachusetts according to some research and family matches. Unfortunately Al Gore is in that line from what I found. I didn't vote for him when he tried running for presidency way back when. But I didn't know than that one family match. And I am ok with that decision.

I think I am related to Mr Beat and in more ways than ONE. One Isaac Wylie (Various spellings) the first man I have ever found to have fought SLAVERY in 1640. Near Lyme Conn. Near Mr Peck his ancestor whom my family did some land transfer with around 1670 or so. NUMBER TWO Roosevelts, My ancestor is the ancestor of Franklin D Roosevelt. He married of course the niece of Teddy Roosevelt his 3rd cousin or so. Roosevelts descend from Nova Scotian by Samuel Bill jr and Joanna Atwell. They are also the Ancestors of Sir Robert Borden , whom my Great Grandfather worked for. Thirdly Mr. Beat descends from the UK SALMONS as I do, my Grandmother was a UK Salmon family from the Nottingham area. My Moms Aunt Rose Salmon was sister in law of Sir Edwin Hartley Cameron Leather, Gov of Bermuda. I saw him once in Hamilton Ontario. He had a Moving Company near where I lived in the 1970's.

On both my mom's side of the family and my dad's side of the family, they worked in show business and that is why I was born in LA. Interestingly, a lot of what I mentioned in this comment hasn't been anything I've really talked about publicly, so your'e getting the hot scoop!

In regards to WikiTree vs Geni, why do you prefer Geni? I have not uploaded my file yet to either, as I am still trying to have a "clean" file first. Plus, I have a hard enough time keeping up with one place vs more than one.

It mostly has to do with the difference between their platform styles and I really like geni's tree view style. I have also been on Geni since 2009, so I find it very intuitive, whereas I haven't been on WikiTree as long and I find it a bit more difficult to navigate. I think both are extremely good websites to be on and highly suggest everyone with an interest in genealogy to have a tree on both, especially if interested in connecting with relatives.

@@GeneaVlogger Thanks! I have been slowly adding DNA matches to my tree. In some cases I have not genetically figured out the relationship, as it may be too distant to find the common ancestor. However with the power of endogamy, so many people have married within the family that I can at least track a connection. Also, I hope to add you! We are distant cousins! Or at least I match several of the kits you manage. 🙂
