Season 16 : SATAN!
Episode 11 : Joshua Blahyi
When war breaks out, it's common to see soldiers in uniforms, carrying standard issued weapons. In the 1990s, General Butt Naked fought in the Liberian Civil War in only tennis shoes, carrying a machete.

Well because there is no war crimes court. A law passed in May that would set up a war crimes court, so we'll probably soon see one in the future. Charles Taylor, another warlord in the first civil war, was president so there obviously wasn't going to be a war crimes court when he was in power (he's a warlord). The second liberian civil war had warlords on both sides, so it was incredibly hard to set up a war crimes court since ex-warlords still held onto some power. Joshua Blahyi is unique in that he was the first and probably the only warlord to ever repent for his crimes. He wanted there to be a war crimes court and testified first in the truth and reconciliation commission, an action that garnered him death threats from other warlords (warlords don't want to be persecuted). He tries to help his victims and the child soldiers he manipulated to fight for him. Child soldiers are an often an underlooked victim as people will blame them for committing war crimes and ostracize them because they were child soldiers.

No, he was and still is a monster. He new when the war came to an end he would have to have a "change of faith." The fact that he received amnesty for testifying against the soldiers he commanded shows he only wanted to get out of trouble.
@wowmazin4399
@wowmazin4399 12 күн бұрын
He received a recommendation of amnesty against prosecution, not amnesty itself since there was no war crimes court in Liberia at the time and even now (although there might be in the soon future). His change of faith is genuine. He didn't have to repent or apologize for his actions just like how many warlords in Liberia haven't apologized and have taken up positions in the liberian government. He could have just gone by without repenting since there still isn't a war crimes court. If he was an opportunist, then he would have taken up arms against Charles Taylor in the second liberian civil war since his side lost the first liberian civil war.

This is really interesting because a few months ago I was reading a book containing some interviews with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first female president of Liberia and the first female elected head of any African State. She chronicles a lot of terror experienced during the civil conflicts and fled the continent at least twice in fear of her life. Nonetheless, she is considered a great leader and has garnered a lot of respect for holding her nerve. She's retired now but still smart as a whip and a wonderful story-teller.

You didn't mention why the civil conflict started, part of it was to free Liberian slaves. Slavery there(which I'm sure there was other forms of slavery before that)was started after the American Civil War. Liberia was opened up to allow freed slaves a chance to return to the mother land if they so chose. After some of them arrived, they started enslaving the Liberian people. The opposition was able to free them, but later, the same leader was eaten alive on television by Joshua's side.(I don't think Joshua was there for that) Now Liberia is labeled the poorest country in the world(or it was years ago) and it shows. The beaches are a human waste location as well as having piles of trash. The streets looks like what Medieval Europe would've looked with human waste and trash. Walking out at night is incredibly dangerous, etc etc. There's a documentary that shows the state of the country and what the people have to suffer, they also have a bit about Joshua. People do not believe him and a lot of people he tried to apologize in person is forced to hug him and accept his apology, terrified that he'll do something to them. The woman in that video broke my heart. The documentary is called: Cannibal Warlords of Liberia. It's here on KZfaq.

I used to work with a bunch of guys from Liberia. I brought up Gen Butt Naked one time and one of them said "Butt Naked shot an RPG at me!" 😂 I know it's not funny but the way he said it was.

Lets see: Nikes: ✅️ Machetes: ✅️ Cult Status: ✅️ Drugs: ✅️ Child Soldiers: ✅️ Strike fear into the hearts of the Aztecs: ✅️ Genocide: ✅️ Wild ass name: ✅️ An incomprehensible amount of war crimes: ✅️ A Jules style redemption arc: ✅️ Yeah, it's pretty clear. Our boy is innocent. Sure, he admitted to all those things, but he did say sorry. I think. Either way, it was probably just a cultural misunderstanding and I don't think it'll ever become a problem again.

I'm not a lock 'em up and throw away the key kinda person, but this guy needs to be spending the rest of his life in prison. He can preach to other inmates. You can't be responsible for 20k deaths and many times more injuries and trauma and just get away with it, even if such a "conversion" is genuine. I even agree with the concept of TRCs, but if you're a leader, you have to face serious prison time.

butt naked was not really active in the 2nd liberian civil war, he was mostly drunk and homeless in the streets of monrovia plus wandering around naked.

The heaviest baby born at 22 lbs was also born to woman with gigantism who had a height of 7'11". I'm sure her disease had a lot to do with the size of the baby. So like you said, it's doubtful he weighed 18 lbs.

In the war for Cuban independence from Spain (known here as the Spanish -American war) 1st & 2nd gen Afro Cuban warriors fought naked on horseback. The Spanish were terrified of their charges.

It’s funny that you say that the heaviest baby recorded in more modern times was 14.8! When I had my first daughter in 1991 in Mass. there was a woman who had a son named Patrick who weighed 14.8! I also had a C-section and when you do you’re always in the two rooms closest to the nurses station. So as the week wore on we all expected to see her at some point, walking to the nursery etc. since they want you to walk after surgery. We never did! Makes you wonder if that’s the record right there?! Poor thing! My baby weighed 8.9 and that was big enough for me! 🙄
