Dear birdnerd, I have a humble suggestion for you. I like very much your wooden DIY cage. However you said that bird droppings are a major concern. May I suggest to place a wire mesh on the floor too and a tray for droppings. This helps a lot to keep your cages cleaner, eliminates mites and makes it easies to clean. I am a bird breeder of greenfinches and canaries. From what I saw, your birds are in excellent condition but mites are one of my regular concerns too. Many thanks James.

I like 👍 your videos on birds for me you’re the best because you EXPLAIN AND show the birds 🦅 Though I’ve been breeding birds for nearly 55 years I always like 👍 a lot watching bird videos and hear 👂 other breeders specially now that’s I’m a pensioner and got more time.

Great and informative video, thanks. One correction. Sun does not provide birds with vitamins. 🙂 Sunlight helps them to synthetize certain vitamins necessary for their functioning and healthy life. 👍

Hi birdnerd! Is there a daily vitamin you can recommend for my zebra finches? They get seed with vitamin pellets plus greens but just throw the pellets out of their dish (they will eat as a last resort lol). Thanks for your videos, love your content!

Thanks there is a vitamin supplement that you can buy online and most pet smart stores carry. I have used them before but only a couple times a month so that I’m not overloading them with vitamins.

be careful with scatt! when I first started out, I used much more than intended accidentally and this ended up killing my gloster female overnight. use only 2 drops

If the birds are heavily infected with mites scatt can kill too many mites at the same time which can block the birds airway and they can't breath and will die.

birdnerd what if you have a bird that is heavily effected with mites and you use 1 drop of Scatt and wait after 21 days and repeat? Is that okay? Hopping that doesn’t kill the poor bird 🙏🏻

Hi mate, just bought a couple of birds from somebody who said they were around 6 months old , not sure if this is right as 2 of the hens have black beaks and 2 of the cocks have red tipped beaks, can these signs be seen in young birds , the guy is scaling down and so in the back of my mind I just wonder if he’s sold me some of his older birds, thanks for any advice, enjoy your clips, keep it up.

Hi Cris, There are warnings about potential accidental overdosing the birds when applying Scatt using 1drop topically to the bird(s). Now I am afraid to use it because it states that 2 drops could kill the bird. I cannot imagine trying to hold the bird securely & trying to give only 1drop where skin is exposed. A breeder stated I could use the S76 in the water but I would have to do it daily for 3 weeks(21 days) as 1Treatment. So how do you make sure only 1 drop of Scatt gets on your bird?

It can be potentially dangerous for the birds. I will get a q tip and I will dip it into the scatt and rub that onto the thigh of the birds. I haven't had an issue with it. In the future I will try to do a video on how I apply it.

that was very interesting , was thinking of getting s76 for my budgies , ive only got two , does it come with pipet for correct dosage for water ,was thinking of worming too , and does that have dosage pipet

No is usually doesn't come with a pipet.

Quick question I have a canary that is starting to lose its head feathers and I can see some baldness spots (very small) do you think it’s mites or something else or maybe he is molting, idk is this normal please help 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Many times before the gouldian molts they start to lose their feathers. You can hold your bird to your ear and if you hear clicking noises when the bird breaths that mean it has mites and you should do a round of treatment for it.

Most likely you have Coccidiosis. Treat all your birds using Baycox.

Yo bro I need some advice have a pair of gouldians and they have hatched young approx 5 timed threw out young 4 times and abandoned the nest the last time, any advice?

Sometimes breeding doesn't go how we want. It could be an array of things as to why the parents tossed or didn't feed the chicks. A few things would be like the pair is too young, they don't feel safe in their current environment (not enough privacy), an underlying health issue, not fed the right diet.

I have some goulians i put s76 on the water a today and gone pit tomorow do you tink they gone die or gone be fine i put 5 ml in to 4 cupes water its fine

That seems to be too much 76 in the cups. I would recommend that you read the instructions that came with the solution to provide that amount for your birds. Best of luck

Great video and tips. I am wondering, I keep loosing Gouldians, they keep getting sick and die. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Are they in an aviary or in a cage I. Your house?

@@birdnerd They are in a cage. in my house, from what I can see they become droopy, with their head on their back, and end up on the floor at one point. They appear to eat and drink but somewhat difficult to tell.

You could try adding some of their favorite foods mixed in with the veggies to help encourage them to eat them.

Give them a bland diet of just seeds and No veggies. If the bird still has diarrhea after a few days I would consult your nearest avian vet.

I will usually take all of the old nest materials out and throw them in the garbage wash all the poop out let the nest dry and then let the birds build a new nest.

There is a good chance it may have mites I would give it Scatt, or S-76 to treat for mites.

Chris, my young pair I bought in February are almost out of molt. Both have light violet breasts. Male Orange head, Female black head, what would babies be , head color? Also in my small avairy I made from a china cabinet, could I add a male canary without a problem? Thank you.

Bonnie, congrats on your birds. if your gouldians don't have any hidden genes your babies would all be black head (YTB) purple breast. if they have other hidden genes in them then there could be a variety of possibilities for the chicks. With your small aviary do you have other birds in it? Canaries are larger and create bigger messes than most other birds.
