Generators usually require maintenance. In today's video we do a Schedule A & B Generac maintenance: changed oil, put a new oil filer on, changed spark plugs, and air filter, in addition, we check the battery voltage to make sure the battery is healthy for the new year ahead. Be sure to check with your owner's manual on which produces to purchase. This is the kit we purchased for our generator.

Great video. Lots of helpful information. I think that you should also test the battery with the charger circuit turned off after you tested the battery with the charger circuit on (which proved that it is being charged properly). A battery analyzer would be the best for that. You don't want to find out the battery went bad when you need the generator during a power outage. I like the Midtronics PBT-200 battery tester or the Midtronics PBT-300 if you need to test higher amperage batteries.

I have the 18kw version and just did my first oil change this weekend after 2 years. I’m at 25 hours of runtime with 8 outages over the last two years. Longest outage was 11 hours. Trying to figure out why your old oil looks so orange (almost rusty). My oil was just your typical dirty black. Thanks for the video.

Hey Steve. Thanks for watching. I chalk it up to the type of oil I’m using and the environment that my generator lives in. I’m in a northern state and my generator is always in the shade. Looks the same rack year when I change it and have no issues with my generator. Thanks again.

Don\'t forget to take a sharpie and write the date the oil was changed on the oil filter. Also use a label machine, make a label and put it on top of the generator and put the date when the oil was changed.

At 11 min. 41 sec. you said it takes 2 and 3/4 of a quart. I know you meant to say 1 3/4. Just thought you should know. Thanks for the video.

Jerry, Good Video and not one of those Haters but I just have to point out there are at least 2 Windows (openings to the House) within the restricted (for CO) airspace around the Generator...

No problem. I did pull a permit to have my generator installed and for my area it passes all the requirements for distance of openings. Thanks for the comment.

I’ve got a new 24Kw Generac that has run for 5 minutes a week for 2 years….meaning I have less than 10 hours of total run time. Changed oil, filters, and plugs….all easy The question I have is why do a valve clearance check since it’s no where near the 25 hour recommendation Thoughts?
@JerryJacksonDIY

Great question Herman... I feel that the owners manual assumes that there will be some outage time usage along with the normal weekly cycle time. But if you are comfortable and have kept track of the amount of run time you generator has then waiting till the 25 hour mark would make sense to me.

Do you know if the maintenance kit he shows here (it says for 22 kWh) is the same one you'd use for the 24 kWh? I can't imagine it's any different, and I can't find the Generac kit on Amazon. Thanks!

I have a 24kw Generac. One year old. It says schedule an every two years. We’re in Florida so maybe not as much use a you. Are you doing it yearly just as an extra precaution? Great video.

Thanks for sharing. Yes. I do it yearly more for precaution and we experience more use. Thanks for the comment.

Do you know if your kit can also be used on a 24kWh Generac? The generic kits cover a range of sizes (like 17kWh to 24kWh) so I'm thinking these parts are the same.
