adding something, the Pokemon cries are stored as 38 cries, just the Pokemon use different pitches and lengths. the weird grumble at the end of some like in Vulpix that aren't audible in stretched versions like Ninetales is due to the noise not being stretched. source: retro game mechanics explained has a video about how she cries work and another on the parameters of all original 151

Nidoking’s 00:36, Drowzee and Hypno’s 1:52 & 1:54, Jynx’s 2:30 and Aerodactyl’s 2:51 cries are the most distinct and legit the best in the game

My favorite group of cries has to be Nidoran line. I really like the progression from female Nidoran to Nidorino getting higher in pitch (with Nidoqueen being the only exception) and then Nidoking comes in with the perfect roar to round it out.

I’ve always loved how similar the cries of Nidoking (0:36) and Moltres (2:56) are. Moltres is just a more epic version of Nidoking, sounding like a freaking king among monsters, despite Moltres being just a flaming rubber chicken 🤣

@@xyzzy-dv6te Of all Pokemon, the mascot's evolved form gets the worst of it. Then again, when has the series been nice to Raichu? They even went as far as to call it hardly seen because Pikachu looks better.

Ah, those old artwork and old cries bring my memories back since I was young toddler and used to watching my cousin play his Pokemon on Gameboy Color since after he show me Pokemon anime back in 1998/1999 era since I grew up with Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Kirby, Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Pac Man, Metroid, F Zero and other on between SNES and Nintendo 64 era and that day 1998/1999 era where Pokemon started.

I remember how many of the sprites in Pokémon Yellow were based off the artwork here, along with a few of the Red/Blue sprites. Also regarding Pikachu, Ken Sugimori changed its image as part of that artwork set a few times. What's seen here is the second revision done at the time Gold and Silver came out; the first revision was done when Yellow was released. (The original version had Pikachu be all rounded and chubby, leaping in the air.)

I love the gen 1 sound effects. I remember when I played Pokémon Pearl for the first time like 9 years ago (yes I know way late) it was cool how Gen 1 Pokemon still had their sounds where as Gen 4 Pokémon sounds sounded newer and more refined.
