I know that the older parents' budget wasn't huge, hence the reason for the semi's that they were shown, but man, the exteriors of the houses they saw were rather ugly. It's what you get for your money, of course. It's great that the couple saw past the very '60's style and saw the potential.

I'm glad they both found homes that met their wishes. Although I wonder if those grandparents are really thinking ahead. As you age, your body declines. And all of their bedrooms are on second floors. So what happens when one of them needs a hip replacement or a knee replacement? Seriously people need to consider these things. The truth is as you get older you get more disabled not less. They should have been looking for a bungalow. At the very least a master suite on the ground floor with a full bath.

The first house Phil showed was not my idea of a great house and it was made worse by the road. The first house Kirstie showed was lovely. The wife saying that it is too far from their church made my hair stand on end. It is a 10 minute drive! That means a 30 minute walk. I have to drive further than that just to get to the pharmacy I use. Good grief. Then the second house is 12 minutes from Oakington. Yikes.

I think you missed that their social life revolves around their church community. It's not just driving or walking to church once a week. It's being near a community for social activities at the church and with people from the church. And Americans are much more willing to get in the car and drive everywhere like it's nothing. You'd be surprised what a relatively short drive for an American is an expedition for a British person.

I'm always surprised when there are cats wandering around inside of the homes that potential buyers are looking at. My husband, son and I are all allergic to cats so that would be very off putting, plus I'm sure they make the houses smell bad. (Ugh...litter boxes.) When we've sold our homes we've always taken our dog in the car with us so it wasn't around when prospective buyers came over. We put the water and food bowls into the garage so there was no evidence of a pet. I also made sure the houses smelled fresh.

A Canadian, myself, I know how "car centric" we must be to live in such a large country, but it can still be done to live in a town or village so that you can walk rather than drive to the grocery store. I moved into town last year exactly for that reason. Although I still have to drive 2 hours just to see my family doctor. Small towns are very short of doctors.
