The first Generational Term to ever be created in the modern sense was by a American woman living in France named Gertrude Stein: Lived (1874-1946) she came up with the term Lost Generation for Surviving World War 1 Veterans who were born from 1883-1900. 1900 being the minimum age to legally fight in the wars last year (1918). After the Global Conflict it was Coined by the aforementioned Stein when she heard the phrase from a French garage owner who serviced Stein's car. When a young mechanic failed to repair the car quickly enough, the garage owner shouted at the young man, "You are all a "génération perdue." translated being "A Lost Generation" and Popularized even further by Ernest Hemingway (himself a member of this Generation as he fought in World War 1 as a teenager) who was a close friend of Steins and upon hearing the recollection of the term Stein added To Hemingway: "That is what you are. That's what you all are ... all of you young people who served in the war. You are a Lost Generation."

Curious if you'll do a video on Xennials (1977-1983) give or take a couple years. While I'm a little torn on the idea of micro generations, I do tend to lean toward this idea for a couple reasons. 1. Things have sped up to the point where culture is hardly the same in ten year groupings, let alone fifteen to twenty year groupings. 2. The news media is terrible at defining generations and ignores large cross-sections of people. Examples for #2: The news media seems convinced that all baby boomers were old enough to go to Woodstock in 1969. But if you were born in 1956 - 1964 you would have still been a child when Woodstock happened. That's nearly a decade of people whose cultural touchstone (according to the media) was an event they weren't old enough to attend, at least on their own. Though it does seem like recently they've broadened the boomer definition. The media focuses on Gen Xers who were born primarily between 1968-1975. That's if it even bothers to pay any attention to Generation X at all. Which is pretty rare. As a Gen Xer born in 1979 myself, I've always felt like I lived in the shadow of true Gen Xdom. All the cool young twenty-somethings at the time who were basically ten years older then me. While at the same time, too old when the media spotlight came back around again to focus on the Millennials. When they focus on Millennials it seems to be anyone born after 1987 and they don't seem to stop at 1996 either, they just keep grouping younger and younger people into the Millennial box. As if Millennial is just the new catchphrase for twenty-something. Despite a lot of Millennials being in their thirties now (even late thirties - hell two of them are running for president of the United States). Gen Z either gets lumped in with Millennials or seen as children who haven't really found their place yet, despite older Gen Zer's being legally allowed to drink for nearly two years now in the states. I honestly feel bad for them. Because I can relate. So basically the media completely forgets about anyone born from roughly 1976 to 1986. There is an entire ten year gap that seems to get skipped over. The media jumps directly from early 70s Gen Xers to early 90s Millennials. What happened to the late 70s to late 80s? Given this glaring omission, this gap in pop culture generational perceptions, I'm really not surprised that someone came up with the Xennial label.
@gauloise6442
@gauloise6442 4 жыл бұрын
roxics not t really. I think of the skate and street art scene as part Of gen x and late 70s early 80s are definitely that. Early exers were more grunge but it's the same overall feel compared to the conformity and eagerness of millennials.
@roxics
@roxics 4 жыл бұрын
@@gauloise6442 You're right about that. That's one concession I will give people born even into the mid 80s, they may not be technically Gen X but they usually fit the persona. But the media still tends to ignore that tail end Gen X early millennial era.
@harrisd1983
@harrisd1983 4 жыл бұрын
@@roxics i agree. I am technically a Millennial, but I act like a Gen Xer since I was born on the cusp so I guess I am Xennial. I think in part it was how fast the culture and technology changed, but also people in my age group were old enough to play Atari and Intellivision while watching MTV. Then we were growing out of the stuff that Millennials are nostalgic for. Younger Millennials will ask me do you remember X cartoon and I will remember it being advertised, but I thought it was too young for me.
@talesfromthenight8407
@talesfromthenight8407 4 ай бұрын
As someone born mid 80s I agree 100% that people born about 87 or 88 onward have a pretty clear millennial identity, and those born before about 78 or 77 or older, seem to have a pretty clear gen x identity. I have always felt people born about 77ish-86ish were just completely skipped over in the media, leaving us confused which generation we belong to. None of us ever even heard the term millennial until we were adults, only to find out that's what we were, despite growing up on big wooden console tvs, hair bands and grunge music, cord phones, Nintendo, MTV when they played music. Then one day in the 2000s you're told you're a millennial, and you look at what millennial represent, like tight pants and emo music, etc. and that doesn't seem right at all. Leaving about a decade of people not sure what generation they belong to..

A couple things I believe this gets wrong. First is the assertion that with working moms get X was somehow a generation that was less supervised that previous generations. Mom's may have been home more for prior generators, but mom's didn't helicopter they kids like is the norm now. Kids were expected by gen X and older generations to be more responsible often pushed to get jobs very young or given chores. Boundaries were set such as get home when the streets lamps turn on, be home for dinner or whatever. If it wasn't something intrinsic like the sun setting, you had to have a watch or rely on a friend or watch the clock at a friends house or simply get close enough to hear you mom calling to insure you made it. That stuff was the norm prior to gen X as well as during gen x. Helicopter parenting started more recently

The problem with generations is that they are so broad. Kids born in 2004 share very little with adults born in 1982. I was born in 2001 and have teachers born in the mid 80s to early 90s, and they are very different then people born after 2000, was we have lived in a world where the internet is everywhere, while they have not.

zachfakelastname, you're partially right in that there wasn't an internet like now but there was an internet and intranet. It was mainly for university and government to research/ communication it was basic text. Pictures were nothing but "X" arranged to form a shape and video game was black and white tennis connected to a TV...not plasma but tube. Although we didn't have internet there is the Library, which was filled with knowledge. Roughly it was around the 1990's internet was becoming available for all but only in colleges and libraries, mostly. Again, it was basic email and alike. Although, there's something to be said about email but a solid paper letter is something to be cherished because it is a piece of a person who had wrote it and to be saved. Besides, press a button and the letter is gone forever. Also, it's the before Generation that teaches the future Generations. Although some past knowledge may not apply at present it's this knowledge that is built upon to create a different future.... We can always learn from the past.

Each generation is appropriately 20 years based on shared experience of an era. There are always some differences between the tail end of any given generation, which is why you see the variation. As a mid-gen Xer (1973), I would say that anyone who doesn’t remember Reagan, the Cold War, the day MTV was born or remembers the first kid to get Atari on the block (intellivision!), isn’t really an X-er, just as the boomers who were just tiny kids during Vietnam and way too young to remember the JFK assassination, aren’t really boomers. The stragglers in each generation usually fit into the next a bit better. My boomer parents were born in ‘46 and sooooooo different than the kids that grew up barely before I did in a very different post-Vietnam world. I often think the generational splits should be looked at differently.

Generations never used to be and still shouldn't be so defined. It goes against the concept of the word itself. Generations are not decades or scores, they are windows, they are perspectives. I can be part of the same generation as two other individuals that do not share a generation. All generations are relative to the topic and subject and setting of a conversation. Everything discussed in this video is all from a single perspective, (as mentioned early in the video, this is the general boomers' perspective.) For example, when in the context of an immediate family, generations often have very different meanings.

The Baby Boom 1946-1964. Accordingly, the term “Baby boom” was used to describe a block of time (1946-1964) where an extraordinary birth rate post WWII occurred; not returning to pre-War level until 1965 was observed in the United States. Consequently, or perhaps because of the passage of time since the phenomenon, there has been much ado over the naming as well as, what years comprise this or subsequent generations i.e., Gen X 1965-1980, or Millennials 1981-1996 . As a result, there has been a departure (by some) from the original reasoning behind the “Boomer“ descriptor. Seemingly, in an effort to reorganize the various generations according to subjective experiential and sociologically driven desire, to categorize and redefine cohort groups into something neater and tidier according to them. Fortunately, everyone has the right to their own opinion concerning these somewhat petty items. However, it could be argued that if it were not for the original Baby Boom observation and subsequent naming of that phenomenon, it is entirely likely that conversations concerning these matters would be very different, maybe even dry and inconsequential. www.statista.com/statistics/296974/us-population-share-by-generation/ www.pewresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/FT_19.01.17_generations_2019.png www.jchs.harvard.edu/blog/defining-the-generations

Sort of a tangent on the Johnny Marr mention. And resenting the marketing .. I am Gen X, born 1970. One thing that is overlooked by most discussions of Gen X is the whole alternative music scene. They talk about grunge and that's about it. The record companies and radio had their pop music but there was a whole scene of music that ignored that. Alternative music had so many different genres sort of mixed up. Growing up on the Jersey Shore we had FM 106.3 a station in Eatontown maybe 30 miles south of Manhattan . There were a few other commercial stations around the country. And college stations. I felt like we were telling the mass marketers of music to "fuck off You can tell us what to like". I mean on alternative radio. There was everything from indigo girls and Tracy Chapman to new order to the reh hot chilies peppers to the pixies to yes even grunge like Nirvana, mudhony. A real variety of sounds and I know for me and my friends we liked all different kinds of stuff and we didn't buy in the hair bands . Then the marketers tried to make everything grunge and I think music went downhill

I also drove thru Maryland many time in my college years between University of North Florida in Jacksonville and NJ. So I am familiar with WHFS . It was a Great station. Speaking of road trips my mom's side of the family is all in northern Florida and my dad's side was in NJ where I was born and raised . We made the 15-18 drive 2-3 times a year. Illustrates how those of us in Gen X span so many cultural changes. We I think are the last generation that remembers having to entertain ourselves. And having to wait for answers The only entertainment on long drives was listening to whatever mom and dad had on the radio and staring out the window at scenery. We had a childhood with only a couple channels on TV, ( until your parents decide to get cable). Saturday morning cartoons ended with Soul Traiin. Christmas specials came.on once a year you missed it too bad so sad.. wait wait til next year. And no binge watching. And if the president gave s speech or breaking news happened all the channels interrupted regular programming And the road trip meant that my brother and I slept on a pallet of blankets in the back of the Ford LTD wood panel wagon( with just Am radio, roll-down windows and no AC only fancy cars like Grandpa's Continental had better) while my parents split time driving overnight.. Seatbelts? Who needs em. By high school everyone was wearing seatbelts I recall my mom writing checks at the Acme or Shop Rite to have cash over the weekend. And for my it was a big deal to get a Sears credit card If your friend went on vacation no communication for 2 weeks.. and no pictures until a couple weeks after they got home after dropping film off at fotomat to be sent off for.developing. and hoping they came out. I feel like such an old.man telling my kids about how it used to be . But I think this is what make.iur generation unique.. we were ready for technology, we know it was coming and we were not afraid. We remember life before the technology but we wonder is it all really better? We have vague memories of how the USA was on top of the world after WW2 as children, only to be taken down by economic woes, military defeats and seeing the USA isn't always the good guy. We are sarcastic and cynical but we still are idealistic We know how entertain ourselves but we sure as hell appreciate Spotify , Pandora a and Netflix. Want to hear afternoon delight from 1976, just play it.. remember the Three's Company when.Jack and Janet thought Chrissy was a prostitute find it on KZfaq or Netflix or Amazon prime. This stuff only applies to the US of A. Whatever Zeigeisty stuff happened in the 70's like Jimmy Hendrix.. Didn't happen everywhere... The 80s....speilberg.. E. T...... The goonies didn't happen all over the world. Nirvana didn't happen in the 90's....in my part of the world. But Eminem and Britney Spears and Korn... happened ...even though I'm not American.. I can relate to Richard Linklaters Boyhood.... But dazed and confused didn't happen for some one 10 or 20 years older than me. I hope you get what I'm trying to say....

Strauss and Howe???? I don't think they are a really reliable source. I think instead of using the "turning" method, you should refer to the idea of cuspers. Smit seems to be the most consistent, and reliable source. I was born in 1997 so I'd be part of Generation Z but I'd also be a MinionZ cusper. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cusper

What do you call the generation that is between Generation X and Millennials? I was born in 1977. I have some beliefs that follow GEN X and some that follow Millennials. For example. there are people who will misgender a person who are GEN X while there are some who are the same generation who will not misgender a person and who are not set in their way. How do you define this?

More stereo typing Anyway watch the original star tek TV series where the inhabitants of a planet were all adolescents aging from 5yrs to 15yrs old only. Typical human nature regardless of what generation its from chose to systematically to eliminate all youthful inhabitants when they turn 16yrs old. Kinda a life imitating art reality. So what do you represent or stand for. People today through evolution educational and skills training are the most intelligent humans in history. Can't tell tho with all the oppressive rules regulations and hatred. Anyway instead of promoting animosity towards innocent people. Talk to your parents about it or take them to court. Posting brainwashing hateful media isn't a good idea if you're targeting me.

The age range for Boomers is ridiculous - every generation is 15 years in the US, but Boomers are 18 years and the silent generation 17 years? Nope, Generation X runs from 1960 to 1975. I was born in 1964 and I am not a boomer, I am generation X. If anything the Baby boomer generation was only 11 years, from 1945 to 1956 and that's even very broadly measured given that the Baby boomers basically consist of the boom in babies being born right after WW2. The post war period had already ended in 1954, so it makes no sense to call ppl born ten years after that still Baby boomers - heck my parents were only 2 to 5 years born before the Baby boomers began coming.

Not really confused with it I can give you an answer if you'd like. Summerall born under a different magnetism or some would say a different gravity so that is the Earth rotates and Alters its tilt a little bit at a time it's all the way back if you paid attention about every 10 to 15 years you'll see a flip that goes all the way back to Lake Egyptian time. Identicals if we have better technology that we know of.
