It might surprise some people but the Jedi Order's relationship with the Galactic Republic is more or less unofficial and based on good faith by both sides of the arrangement. We take a look at why this endangers both organizations and a recent attempt to carry out an external review on the jedi is a terrific idea.

If you rewatch the episode in which Ahsoka was accused, you’ll see that the Council’s hasty judgement of her was pressured by the Senate and Supreme Chancellor. That wasn’t a typical Jedi trial.

The Jedi are a mash up of the knights Templar, the samurai, even King Arthur myths. The “force” is based on the pre Christian idea of “Spiritus Mundi” an idea of a “world spirit” if everyone does good all will be good and visa versa if all do bad all will be bad… similar to the idea of karma. “Force Users” are sensitive to these changes in the force and are able to tap into pathways within the force to communicate with all the global creatures. corruption of the ppl of Lucas’ parallel universe is what darkened the force which is what lead to the down fall of the jedi. The darkness weakened the good but strengthened traditional users of the dark side like witches and the sith. The problem with “Star Wars” after Lucas let go of it, is the fact the writers have very little understanding of the history as Lucas used it to creat his parallel universe. The writers have resorted to giving force users magic as it were. They ruined SW as great basis for story telling. Lucas created Star Wars as a way of understanding the forces in his own life. The us government was fighting in Vietnam at the time, he grew up Christian but Zen Buddhism was important in Northern California where he grew up and questioned its role in his life and the life of others, he grew up loving mechanical and tech stuff-his love for hot rods and airplane’s is obvious in his early work. George is Luke: a young man in search of himself… he created a parallel universe as a test bed, as it were, to gain understanding and insight as to his own life. This is true art!

I want to know the parts of my program that are doing well and especially the parts that are not. I view it as a chance to improve, and gain advocacy for parts that are struggling. Much of the time it is a chance to advocate for insufficient manpower and resources to do the job right, or even to divest of those parts if resource requirements are too great.

It’s funny you mention Tython in the end. If you play SWTOR and are on Tython, you can come across two Jedi Masters debating about the merits of the staying in the Tython temple vs rebuilding the Coruscant temple. One argues that the Jedi should be in a place where they can focus and center themselves while the other argues they should be in a place where they are seen and frequently interact with the people of the Republic
@JediMasterZim
@JediMasterZim 3 күн бұрын
And the thing is, when you think about it and think on the lore, there is merit to both arguments presented by each Jedi Master. On the one hand, the Jedi logically should be able to focus and center themselves, connecting better with the Force and to their powers. On the the other hand, logically speaking it also would be a good idea for the Jedi to be regularly seen and interact with the people of the Republic, so as to establish better rapport between them and make sure the Jedi aren't too disconnected with the people. I think probably the best answer to the debate between the two Jedi Masters is that a sweet spot right in between is necessary and good for the Order, that the Jedi need to find a way to somehow do both.

That's from Legends/EU material. In the new canon I don't know if it would be allowed. Although speaking of this subject and the Legends canon there was an awesome period of time referred to as the "Republic Dark Age" when the Jedi more or less took over. The galaxy was being wracked by an incredibly deadly plague, the Sith Empire imploded and the Republic collapsed as whole sectors quarantined themselves. Technology regressed as the holo-net fell apart and many of the people who knew how to maintain most of the advanced technologies of the galaxy perished to the plague or the conflicts that resulted from it's spread. The surviving Jedi of this time appointed themselves "Lord Protectors" of what was left of the Republic sectors. This period lasted for the better part of a thousand years and ended with the Battle of Ruusan where the last of the Sith were supposedly wiped out. Interestingly enough the Ruusan Reformations which is the event that lead to the birth of the High Republic and the restructuring of the Jedi Order to it's current form are actually part of the new canon.

14:25 "We don't know why she's trying to cover this up..." -- Personally, I don't think it's nefarious on her part... I think she's an idealist, who has this image of the Order on a pedestal where it can do no wrong. But it does -- a lot. The Jedi are "only human" so to speak (I know, multiple species, it's the only adage I can think of haha!) -- they make mistakes, they get involved and let their feelings lead them, and they don't know everything. But every time they mess up, it tarnishes the image of the Order in the public's eye... so she's trying to prevent that. I think she wants the public to admire and respect the Order, and she wants the Jedi to feel confident and proud of the work they do -- and she does that by just brushing a few little missteps under the ole Jedi Council carpet. But sooner or later, all those little things add up and start to trip people up..... I think Qimir's deviation from the light side was one of those little things, and now it's come back to trip Vernestra up in a MUCH bigger scale.

Let's not forget that in the eyes of the public the Jedi were leading an army fighting a separatist movement and rebel forces lead by what everybody percieved as a Jedi as well (though former). This would further create an image of Jedi as a driving force behind the war. Dooku was the perfect tool for Palpatine and he politically outmaneuvered the order of Monks who had their heads in force clouds. I would say one thing though: The Jedi might be a flawed institution, but they did try their best. They curbed a natural pull toward zealotry pretty well and remained constrained as much as possible. If only they got out of their temples a bit more, had a few drinks and mingled with people. Might have resulted with many more force sensitive babies, but at least they would have had a better grasp of the situation. :P

I agree with auditing the Jedi order in principle, but it should be based on some sort of formal agreement between the order and the Republic, otherwise the audits could easily become a weapon used for political goals and/or they could paralyze the Council's ability to do what the Republic expects from them because of having to constantly put their work on hold in order to answer questions, show receipts, explain why the vault with all the Sith artifacts should be allowed to stay off-limits to the auditors, explain to the auditors why the Jedi order should be allowed to monopolize Kyber crystal mining & why the Order should be allowed to keep the locations of the mines secret etc.

Great job on this one, especially the geography of regions effecting views towards the Jedi and the relationship between the Jedi and the Republic becoming counterproductive through overreliance. A key concept that can be seen in multiple military cultures is the subservience of the military to the political authorities, such as in the US military needing to remain politically neutral written within its legal codes (and the commander in chief/dod lead as a civilian) as well as in the PRC with the PLA specifically subservient to the CPC.

Sure, but then you have to factor in the military industrial complex in the US and the hold they have over the political power in the country. In essence, it's a corporatocracy designed to have the political class create and maintain the need for ever greater military budgets... Any type of ads and funding should be illegal in politics - especially with the advent of social media.

This real-politik view of the starwars universe makes me wonder: In our world, every organization has it's dirty-tricks division. A group who is willing to break the law and even sell their own souls for the good of their leader. Their mental defenses include "We get our hands dirty so the ones we love don't have to.". What if the Jedi org had something similar. I know Andor and Rogue One showed it for the Republic and the Rebellion, but those are non-Jedi orgs.

To be honest the show is actually pretty good. The action is great, story also isn't bad and lore wise, so far it follows well. There are some occasional mistakes/weird things (that fire in space) or retcons (Ki-Adi-Mundi's age), but when it comes to the actual show there isn't anything really bad about it. (Some people complain about acting/cinematography, but as a average person I really didn't see anything alarming.) The problem lies in the actors and directors. If you look at all the real life stuff about it the talks, personal beliefs, interviews. You will find a lot of things nobody agrees on/likes - lgbtq stuff, bad knowledge of lore from actors.... So the show is actually good (I personally am enjoying it very much and I am one of those crazy people who even read books (: so I know decent amount about SW), just don't look at the real world stuff about it.

I can't quite collect my thoughts very well but I have mixed feelings about all this. I suppose I feel like the Jedi should be portrayed as very sincerely trying to keep all their members in the light and genuinely believing that getting fully entangled with the republic is the right move. My understanding is that this is based very much on them working together to defeat the sith before. The Jedi slowly stopped going out independently to find people in need, to seek out the dark and dig it out at the roots. The failure isn't that they're actually corrupt in the vain and relatively petty ways real world institutions are but instead became lost and complacent, a tool of the republic that is no longer true to the spirit of their own beliefs and teachings. The fail to teach people how to deal with their emotions or other natural difficulties and instead preach repression and avoidance. They seemingly no longer work to maintain balance, harmony and peace in the galaxy (which is how I interpret the will of the force in star wars) but to maintain the status quo of the republic because they now mistake them as being the same thing. I find that a much more interesting story than cover ups and political machinations. Having said that, to say that the Jedi would be able to escape political manoeuvring and its corrupting influence while so entangled with the republic is rather naive to the point of being silly. So yeah, mixed feelings. I'm reserving judgement. I admit to going off vibes a lot. A lot in the acolyte isn't particularly objectionable but doesn't really suit the vibe of star wars for me, that doesn't mean the same ideas can't be used or explored but how they're integrated into a star wars property needs to be handled carefully to feel right to people who have a general sense of what "feels" like star wars. I actually think a lot of people who are critical of the acolyte are similar to me but are apoplectic about it for some reason, I find it slightly jarring but it's not a huge deal really.

Yeah like all things considered for an organization with no oversight, the Jedi are a pretty positive organization that consistently pumps out heroic and decent people. It’s hard to say just how bad the Jedi are in this show just yet. I think rwoh is definitely a problem but I’m sure we’ll see a very nuanced reason why she’s doing what she’s doing. I get what you and a lot fans mean by the vibe is off with the Jedi. But I would argue that’s something that started in the prequels. During the OT we literally knew nothing about the Jedi and the only ones left were very pure Luke, Yoda, Kenobi. With the prequels we learned a lot about the Jedi and by dispelling a lot of the mystery we also saw their flaws. The clone wars and a lot of novels during the era (Karen Travis RC series) showed an even darker side to the war.

@@Crocthunder As I remember from legends (idk if it's canon now) the sentinels were tasked with seeking out the dark side as in the left the temples and explored the galaxy to actively look for it and fight it. They should have been re-tasked with seeking out injustice outwith the tasks handed to the order by the republic. Consulars working as diplomats, Guardians as peacekeepers and Sentinels going out into the galaxy to work where the republic doesn't reach or just overlooks.

DoD is often seen as the most inefficient use of taxpayer money, (and we have a lot of room for improvement.) Dod and the services are constantly under the microscope and have numerous audits, both systemic and un-programmed. However, I've read several times (one source was GAO) that DoD is one of the most efficient parts on government. I find this terrifying. If we're among the most efficient what everyone else doing?

spot on. I think you've got the best most constructive voice in "star wars criticism" For sure, the Jedi, as presented so far, the organization has been put in a difficult spot, they pretty much have to be dedicated guardians of the Republic, but it's hard to keep on being unelected and unaccountable guardians of a semi-democratic galactic republic. member worlds and member multi-world entities all have their own legacies and traditions and interests, the lack of outer-rim investment is just one example of the consequences, the complete lack of a galactic-scale defense/security infrastructure, and there are no doubt forces pushing things in an imperial-ish direction via "reform" even without a Sith Lord's machinations. Given the long history of dark-side force users raising armies and spreading chaos, there's also no doubt some who would like to see "force use" of all types banned. So there are many risks the Jedi face on a continuous basis. What's missing from the depiction of a Jedi Order adapting to this situation ( which they've had thousands of years to do ) are a few components: large numbers of sympathizers, washouts, etc... all sorts of people who aren't Force Users who none the less are associated with the order. These are the people who maintain facilities, work all the Logistics, and so on, needed by a galaxy spanning organization operating in a constant low-level threatening environment. Some of this is handled by the Republic, but the Order has "it's own people" too. For every Overt jedi facility there needs to be a covert facility - completely "off the grid" safe-house/safe-fortress type facilities. Large numbers of droid-based combat units and person-operated units need to be in safely hidden storage as well, for those just-in-case moments, especially the ones in space. For every Jedi growing up and operating in the Overt 'exoteric' Order we see in canon, there would be a Jedi who grew up in secret situations, hidden settlements, constantly moving large space craft, etc. These form the Covert 'esoteric' Jedi, no one knows for sure how many or who they are, supported by their own network of non-force using associates. These "Hidden Jedi" make the Order safe against threats like Order 66, as well as allow a large number of Force users to remain separate from the intricacies of galactic civilization and commune deeply with the Force, while another segment become excellent Agent-type operators, able to accomplish complex risky missions without ever visibly using the force... Some individuals move between both the inner and outer Order, but many inner order jedi are only dimly aware of the outer order's existence. Were all the truth known, the galaxy may well have these hidden jedi to thank for their last thousand years of peace. Meanwhile at any time, the galaxy has on the order of 1000 venerable Elder Jedi who've "retired" but now operate a Shadow Council that secretly supports, supplements, guides and complements both the inner and outer aspects of the Order. At the same time there are small clusters of disorganized social groups often entirely unconnected to the jedi cultural traditions... Night Sisters for example... that have found some methodology for interacting with the Force and are able to reliably pass on this 'training' to others. The Jedi policy is to interact positively with such groups, intending to foster mutually beneficial relations. This is not possible with all such groups, sometimes measures have to be taken to prevent them from harming others. In most cases an eye is kept loosely on such groups, and conflict is rare. However, RECENTLY certain elements in the Senate have been pushing an "anti-force use agenda" and have managed build up enough of an up-swelling of concern-trolling to get a law past that says that only the Jedi Order may train talented youth in Force Use. The jedi do not support this law, didn't ask for it, but have no choice but to comply. Mostly nothing changes, but in some special situations this leads to events that are easily twisted into anti-jedi propaganda.

The phantom menace most of the senate including valorum were pro Jedi.

Thanks for another great video and analysis. The hardcore fans defenders of the Jedi as pure and just should look at them from far away... Look at the political and military invo9lvement aspects you mentioned (in several videos), see all extremely expensive infrastructure the Jedi have at their disposal, that does not come for free. The Jedi deviated from their path and became arrogant hypocrites who suffered from an inflexible hierarchy and extreme group thinking. They forcibly took children from their families, ignored suffering in several planets because of their own interests, etc. I could say that their demise was something The Force itself allowed to rebalance itself.
