The Galactic Republic at the federal level was a representative democracy, but at the local level you had all sorts of government structures ranging from hive minds to tribal confederacies, there were also a surprisingly large amount of monarchies. Today we take a look at five different monarchs who took their birthright and led their planet to disaster.

While Prince Bail Organa was the Prince-Consort of Alderaan, he was not the planet's monarch; that would be his wife, Queen Breha Organa. Also, Padme's reign was so popular that the Naboo contemplated a constitutional amendment so that she could stay in office after her second term of office, which she ultimately turned down. Her successor then asked her to continue to serve Naboo as Senator.

I will also add that the knock on Padme is that Sidious tricked her... Sidious tricked Yoda that's not a blemish on anyone's record that's unique. I will also point out that Valorium is also pretty fucking incompetent in that sequence and he's elected.

While all fair assessments, Satine very competently handled her position, but she had a very corrupt government to deal with, multiple sith vying for her planet, the whole war to stay against, a political terrorist organization attacking her people and her stance. So while things did not go well for Mandalore in the end, it seems to have little to do with her as a monarch. Much more to do with an almost unwinnable position. Even if she had been pro republic, thing would have ended bad for Mandalore none the less with the Sith's secret manipulations. Monarch or republic, Mandalore was likely doomed no matter what

I think the point was more that her pacifism, while admirable, was not a smart position to take in the first place given galactic events. Even if she wanted to remain unaligned in the clone wars, she and the other council leaders needed more firepower to back up their neutrality.

Being head of a monarchy often gives you less capabilities for dealing with corruption. This is because replacing a monarch with a new one is way easier for the corrupt officials than dismantling a democracy.

I don't think there was really a way for Satine to win. She was pacifist, which is morally good, but that also means that she can't fight back wholesale without betraying her morals to some extent. Maul, Visla, and Palpatine all couldn't care less about peace and kindness, and aren't afraid to kill people who get in their way

The saddest part about this video is that all of these leaders were genuinely good people and rulers who either made a bad choice that seemed like the right one, they were forced into a no-win scenario, or both. However, I'd argue that Bail Organa saved the rest of the galaxy at the cost of his own planet since much of the rebellion's early success as well as the preservation of the Jedi order can be attributed to him.

One thing that confused me about S7 of the clone wars is that in season 4 at the end of the Onderon conflict Dooku says that a prolonged war doesn’t interest him and orders his army to withdraw from Onderon and go to Agamar (where they stayed until 4 BBY) but in S7 it seems that either Dooku or Greivous decided to attack Onderon again because Kenobi thinks that Garrera is asking for help.

Padme handled the Naboo Crisis, as well as any official, would have in her situation, royal or not, and Valorum was as stated incapable of doing anything effective for Naboo and in the end she led a successful insurrection that liberated her people with relatively few casualties given the Trade Federation's numbers. And it's not really fair to blame her for Palpatine, his rise to Chancellor was practically guaranteed the moment the Trade Federation showed up in the Chommell Sector, had she never escaped Naboo the sympathy Palpatine had gotten would have won him the Chancellorship just as effectively, that was even the original plan. As for everything after he became Chancellor, that was his work and Padme did spend years trying to counter him and even got a few small victories against him once she was a Senator. If you want to blame a Naboo monarch for dooming their planet then Padme's two predecessors would be better candidates for bringing Naboo to the Sith's attention in the first place and then nearly effectively selling their world to the Bando Gora, Black Sun, and the Hutts.

I wouldn’t judge a person based on what they were unable to prevent others from doing. Bail Organa for instance couldn’t prevent the destruction of his planet, but he isn’t the one responsible for it. Someone who actually intends to destroy a planet and then does, is responsible for destroying a planet; not someone who literally does everything they are capable of to prevent it. And it’s inaccurate to pin all the blame on them even for being unable to prevent it- they are just one of a multitude of different cooperative components that allowed that specific unfolding.

I'm actually quite happy that Star Wars does have several examples of constitutional monarchies. Considering it's such a common form of government in the real world (I live in Canada, part of the British Commonwealth, and King Charles III is our Head of State), it's sadly under-represented in fiction. In my SW fanfics, I have a very effective constitutional monarchy. I gave that form of government to Thrawn's Legends Unknown Regions/Wild Space confederation, the Empire of the Hand. Thrawn's wife, Xelarra, is appointed Empress of the Hand, to reign over the civilian aspects of their confederation, while Thrawn is Supreme Commander of the military. Talk about a power couple!

1) Lee-Char came to the throne as an adolescent but the CIS murdered his father and started a civil war. If the CIS haven't intervened, Lee-Char would've been able to keep peace. I mean in the end he convinced the Quaren to join him and fight against the CIS. As for the Jedi, it was risky but he couldn't know that the Jedi had morality of Luthen Rael and was willing to sacrifice millions of Mon Calamari for the greater good. 2) As you've said, Bail wasn't the ruler of Alderaan; that was his wife Breha and Bail was only a consort. But I agree that he played a very risky game without consulting his people. I think that he was convinced that the Empire wouldn't touch a human core world like Alderaan and this underestimation turned to be a fatal mistake. 3) Ramsis Dendup paid for not choosing a side which made him no friends and a target at the same time. 4) Padme's age never made sense to me. I would understand if she would inherit a position but who would elect a pre-teen girl as a ruler? I always thought that it would've made more sense if she inherited the position - perhaps going through some test and beating her older sister - and later resigning to become a senator. I mean Episode 3 Padme would've been a much better ruler than Episode 1 Padme. 5) Satine was well intentioned but she totally ignored the Mandalorian traditions which logically provoked a backlash. Combine it with her neutral stance which made her no friends - similar to Onderon's Ramsis Dendup - it's no wonder that she was overthrown.

Honestly the moment Satine openly expressed her absolute disdain for Warriors doomed her Rule from it's inception. All she had to do to neuter Death Watch was make it clear that she was going rebuild Mandalore's Military as a Self Defense Force after she made sure that the Civilian Sector was stable. If she made a stance of 'We wont start fights but we'll end them' I'm fairly certain that only the Most fanatical members of Death Watch would remain. It would likely rub some of the extremists on her side of the aisle but the fence sitters would see this as an olive branch and respect to the old traditions. But no she acts antagonistic to basically anyone who doesn't match her ideology perfectly. Just look at her and Obi-Wan, while there's history between them, none of it would push her to be so rude towards him, and from what I understand Obi-wan was on Mandalore to investigate Death Watch activity given how they were launching small attacks in Republic space. She even made it clear that she would've ceased speaking with him if he was involved in the death of a Mandalorian citizen when they were speaking after a Death Watch terrorist attack. I suspect that it wouldn't have mattered to her if Obi-wan was simply defending himself. Given that Obi-wan was there officially on behalf of the Republic that would've caused her a political shitstorm that would've torn her rule down even faster then it was in actuality.

There was a long period of human history where monarchies and inherited rule made a fair amount of sense. You always want the best people for a job. And sadly, for a lot of human history, the common people just couldn't fit that bill. They didn't have access or time to education. While the rich, or those with noble titles did. So to a large degree, it made sense the ruling class would come from them. Normal people had to work too much and couldn't learn what what was needed for these positions. Obviously there is no reason for it now. And even then, often those privileged enough to have access to that learning wouldn't take advantage of it. But in theory at least it made sense for a lot of human history.

When someone's trained from the crib how to do a job effectively, they tend to be the best choice. Especially compared to someone who just so happened to win a popularity contest that most of the population didn't even participate in. I mean really, why is "Age" and "Country of Origin" the only two prerequisites? Surely education and/or political experience are necessary, right?

Hey, I've long enjoyed your videos, but I have a tricky question... How shielded was Alderaan when the DS1 obliterated it? Star Trek has shown a wide range of planetary shielding, between the Planetary Shields from TOS's "Whom Gods Destroy", where the shields were well above the strength it would take to vaporized a planet's core (in that the Enterprise couldn't use less than planet busting firepower to pierce the shields sufficiently to use a transporter through them... and that firepower would cause planetary collapse faster than an away team could beam down on the opposite side of said planet from where the phasers pierced the planetary shields) To in DS9, the Founder's World, where a sustained bombardment from 2 whole fleets couldn't take down the planetary shields in "The Die is Cast" before the Founder's fleet arrived to enact their trap. (DS9 era weapons included star and solar system consuming weapons/science project gone wrong of the week enough times, that this is an appropriate assumption for what the Cardassians and Romulans would load into their torpedos) Now for my question... on a scale from off(0), to Planetary (Whom Gods Destroy), to Stellar (The Die is Cast), tier shielding... how powerful were the planetary shields on Alderaan when the Death Star 1 destroyed it without warning? Star Wars makes it rather difficult to understand how powerful their shielding is, but always gives great spectacle once things start exploding

From what i know about the lore I think the DS was specifically built to overwhelm planetary shields. A world like Alderaan that was rich and had a history of conflict would’ve most certainly had a planetary shield of some sorr

@@GenerationTech hmm... so the DS1 is still somewhere around the Enterprise A's feats... but it is unclear how far above the Hoth planetary shields Alderaan would have had. Unless I can find some source saying the planetary shields for Alderaan could block their sun going supernova, DS9 era planetary shields are well above what can be confirmed in Episode IV

I thought the Republic was similar to the European Union and NATO where sovereign planets in the Core had a simple union based on similar common law, trade, defense and regulation for navigation coordinates. It wasn’t until the Republic expanded out of the Core where planets lost more autonomy as more power was funneled to the central government.

As a proud follower of the old ways of Mandalor, the Duchess weakened her mighty people. Warriors sor fearsome that just seeing a small group of them waa enough to rethink ones actions, one of the very few non force sensitive races that could fight the jedi and win. It's funny that you bash monarchies because they're unqualified, yet Star Wars has no shortage of democratically-elected representatives who were far worse than the monarchs you listed. From the electoral side you have: Senator Orn Free Taa and his predecessor, Senator Connus Trell, Senator Dagonet, Chancellor Valorum, Senator Onaconda Farr, Senator Mee Deechi, Senator Halle Burtoni, Senator Tal Merrik, and the many senators who just blindly went with the Empire and allowed it to grow in power. The "silent majority" if you will. Not to mention that despite being elected politicians, the Senators mostly did nothing about the weaknesses of the Republic and even profited from it instead of fixing it, which gave Palpatine and Plagueis their opening to manipulate things and lead the galaxy to ruin. Which kinda makes them worse than Emperor Palpatine considering that he actually tried to fix the galaxy's problems in his own violent way. And yes, without the likes of Bail, Leia, and their friends, you wouldn't have a Rebel Alliance, and Palpatine would've just ruled the galaxy for life. So if anything, Star Wars is the story of the God-ordained monarchy and the aristocracy saving the galaxy from a monster that the people elected. And even the Empire was a better choice when compared to any space democracy in Star Wars, since it provided jobs, got a lot of people working, and provided genuine welfare for its subjects. Quite literally, the Senate was always full of corruption (LOL they voted in the Pius Dea cult in the past) and it was the Republic military and the Jedi Order that kept them honest for 24,000 years.

He's wrong about why but not if, monarchy's are most of the time not bad because the leader would be incompetent. Being head of a monarchy often gives you less capabilities for dealing with corruption. This is because replacing a monarch with a new one is way easier for the corrupt officials than dismantling a democracy. Succesfull democraties just aren't as interesting to make an episode about.

@@thomasandriessen1046 Democracies are far easier to corrupt than monarchies. Just buy some elected official with money, and you're good to go. Meanwhile, breaking the laws of a monarch usually ends with you hanged or jailed, and if you want to buy a monarch or his advisors, you'd need a lot more money than you would if you're buying an elected official who's always up for reelection and always in need of money to fulfill his promises. Especially since monarchs can tax their nations as much as they want, so it's not like money will be that hard to come by, unless they've had a string of bad luck.
@thomasandriessen1046
@thomasandriessen1046 Жыл бұрын
If you can influence the political landscape as directly as you are talking about then it wasn't a democracy in the first place. The US for example isn’t undemocratic today because it got filled with corruption, it's an oligarchy because it has succeeded in staying one. Of course, true democracies can suffer from corruption, but there are still checks and balances that are effective enough to have a working system that has the will of the citizens as priorities. Meanwhile a monarch end everyone else in his/her hierarchy has to constantly give personal benefits to those beneath them (hierarchical) for them to support him/her.
@HolyknightVader999
@HolyknightVader999 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasandriessen1046 That's in theory. In practice, the electorate is easy to corrupt. For example, a politician wanting to tax the rich to give money to the poor can easily get votes, even if it drives away businesses and makes the country poorer. In the same vein, a political party with a lot of money can bribe their way into power, giving donations to special interest groups that claim to represent entire blocs of voters to get their vote. Also, different types of monarchies have checks and balances. Medieval monarchs are sworn in by the nobility and the Church, and they can just as easily unseat their king if they feel his rule to be unjust.

Ok so just because Satine isn't corrupt doesn't give her slack as far as competence or correctness. My take is that her politics pretty much marginalized all the clan leaderships so even though she had beaten Death Watch and enforced pacifism, it was on a very thin pillar of support. Because of this, the ranks of her administration were flooded by corrupt opportunists who else would play along with her radical political views? She tried changing the Mandalorian culture by fiat and it came right back and killed her. Maybe if she didn't upend things so dramatically and built a governing federation of the moderate clans, she could have arrested the Mandalorian cycle of violence while also having a stronger leg to stand on. She kept all her resources at home by not getting involved in war, and she STILL ended up losing to a coup so clearly her centralized authority was tenuous at best. Having other clans friendly to her might have saved everything. Also, the GAR was really interested in mandalorian warriors, so she missed a huge opportunity to gain influence for the poor planet instead of remaining friend to none. The thing about monarchs is that they are not about innovation or ideology, they are about stability and continuity. You have to put asidr personal preferences and act in the name of the planet itself. I think she joins Ned Stark as cautionary tales of leaders who got too stuck in their good intentions.

I've always felt a bit annoyed with the thesis of this video... you have completely missed the point of monarchy the point of monarchy is that if you have an individual whose social and political status is *always* higher than every other individual, so that they automatically win any political conflicts they enter into, that person can feel secure in their position and therefore becomes immune to a huge swath of the ordinary kinds of unproductive incentives that political actors have. nobody ever thinks kings are more competent. sometimes kings *are* more competent, and when they are they get called heroes, but your ordinary bog-standard royal was usually thought of as being rather boring monarchs get to exist above factionalism and partisanship, because their status does not hang on any particular outcome. this is really freakin important, especially if your civilization hasn't invented political science yet and you simply don't have enough institutional capacity to maintain a complicated government. the various factions and parties and tribes will fight amongst themselves, but the monarch always gets to stand above as referee, and each side is better off for it because without the referee it would devolve into open civil war and you'd get conquered by an outside power. the only kind of political situation the monarch must fear is a movement which challenges the monarch's legitimacy. Even if everyone involved is in full agreement that the monarch is of infinite status, questions over *which individual is the monarch* rear their ugly head like clockwork nearly every single succession, and once the idea of republicanism reentered the world with the french revolution, the idea of unanimous support of a monarch's legitimacy became absurd, and now the whole idea is completely untenable but it *used* to serve a very important purpose. And even today, in some places! I think people underestimate the intelligence of the late Queen of England. She successfully found a way to genuinely act as a referee, and be treated as such, while remaining convincingly uninvolved in the actual political conflict she was refereeing. I think she showed that even politically powerless monarchs can still retain a kind of 'authority' status, not by serving as a head of state but by serving as the ultra-respected wise old woman who nobody wants to fight in front of. It would have all fallen apart in an instant if she had ever endorsed a party in an election, and she recognized that, and found a way to genuinely contribute nonetheless. this is ordinarily the kind of information i expect you to know, and convey way more succinctly than i can, and i was just a little disappointed that the first few minutes of this video are just "yeah monarchy didn't work as well as democracy because sometimes the monarch is a crazy sith lord, anyway starwars had a lot of good monarchs surprisingly! let's examine them"
