The Old Republic Era is my favorite, partially due to the MMO I can't lie. I feel they were most aware of the flaws and contradictions that lay at the heart of the Order; Satele Shan even goes so far as to ally with Darth Marr, and even reach a deeper understanding of the Force at a level not seen since the days of the old Je'daii. I feel that if her ideals had been explored more post-Zakuul, the Republic could have seen greater stability and even forge a peace with Darth Alcina, who was certainly more pragmatic than any of her forebears as Emperor. That said, the pure romantic pseudo-Taoist overtones of the Je'daii era appeals to me in a deep way, and it's an era I'd love to see explored in more detail somewhere.
@jeremyleonjonas7657
@jeremyleonjonas7657 Жыл бұрын
The je'daii are the prime protagonists of the Dawn of the Jedi series. Which is a pretty cool comic run. But that being said, you can't actually balance the light side and dark side as they attempted. Which is the exact reason they became the purely light sided jedi. You either follow the will of the force (light side) or go against it (dark side), there really isn't a in between.
@callummacalister
@callummacalister Жыл бұрын
@@jeremyleonjonas7657 I definitely understand your point regarding the dark and light sides, but my take is slightly different; we're only really told by the Jedi themselves that the Light Side should dominate, whereas Lucas is quite adamant that the Force seeks "balance". In other words, like religious figures throughout time, the Jedi impose their own vision of what the Force "should" be upon our understanding of it. Now, is it _possible_ for pure, balance embodiment to happen in a single peson? That is certainly debatable - most examples we see are of one or the other side being at least partially dominant - but just because it may not be possible in practice doesn't make it worth dismissing as a goal. After all, Buddhism is a thing. I might also respectfully disagree with the characterization of following "the Will of the Force" as being a Light Side characteristic. Again, we only have the Jedi's word for it that positivity and generousness is the pure "Will of the Force", and I would argue that if the Force is, indeed, generated by all life throughout the Galaxy, to strip out the need to consume and impose oneself upon one's environment that life itself necessitates is no more "the Will of the Force" than pure, rapacious consumption and greed. Either way, this is perhaps more a philosophical discussion than is needed here, but thanks for the recommendation on the comics! I don't usually read too many Star Wars comic (having been put off decades ago in the OT comic book era of.. silliness) but I will give them a look!

@@callummacalister iiiits not really as debateable as some like to think. Revan went nuts and literally torn in two, Darth Gravid not only went insane, but also hilariously weak, Darth Caedus went insane... the trend kinda shows at that point. Others like Mace, Jolee or Kreia very much align with either the dark or light side and are not "balancing" both sides, but are firmly on one of those sides. Regarding the will of the force... I don't see how the force being the collective life force of all life would dispute that. In fact, kinda the opposite: the force would strife for whats best for all life in the galaxy by its very nature. Its also a core of the dark side to impose ones will on the force rather then abide by it, so the opposite also checks out. And on top: all jedi who achieved Oneness (like Anakin, Luke or Jacen) or something similar (Obi-Wan, Galen Marek, Jaina ect) always did so by opening themselves up to the force rather then controlling it. Its not about control but about trust. Its certainly an interesting topic to discuss, and I feel its good that the lore doesn't make a clesr cut call either way. Enjoy the comics xD they are really cool. And yeah, SW comics from the 2000s and onwards got a lot better.

@@jeremyleonjonas7657 - Oh I completely understand that the material as shown definitely makes the case that balance is impossible. I'm trying to engage with the material in amore theoretical way I think; as shown it's impossible to balance the Force in the way some talk about, undeniably. My argument really is that this is a simplistic view of the way the Force is presented on a philosophical level. When it comes down to it, what _is_ the Force? How does it work (not technically/scientifically, but philosophically)? Given the paucity of information about what the Force is on that level, sure the good vs evil dynamic is easy to write great stories about, and I don't decry them or denigrate them in any way. I guess I'm looking for something that doesn't (and may not be able to) exist - an exploration of the deeper underpinnings of how the Force may operate beyond the binary, how the existence of Life, and the abstracted "life-force" itself, as pure "essence" would manifest and what, if it did, it might "want". Could it even have a "will" beyond pure equilibrium? And what might that equilibrium state really mean for those sensitive to it? Sorry if this is a massive over-read of the material - I freely and gladly admit that it is. These are, after all, stories that are retellings of the Heroes Journey, not examinations of the meaning of life! But I think such a thing could be a very interesting, rich take on Star Wars without necessarily contradicting anything that we're shown in the sounrce material. After all, if we take Star Wars as a whole as the "campfire stories" of the galaxy far, far away, the "real history" could be fascinating too (albeit for a much, much smaller audience).

@@callummacalister not to worry, I don't mind (in fact, I quite enjoy a good talk about such matters). Its a muddied topic, my personal take on the forces will would probably be that its bot sentiemt, but tries to balance itself anyway. Kinda like some RL phenomena like gravity wouldn't be sentient, but seek certain states over others anyway. Just my personal interpretation, of course. The source material is, most likely by purpose, very muddied in these regards.

I like the Old Republic Jedi the most, because it faced a powerful Sith Empire and it felt like they were fighting for something, and each Jedi had to push themselves to succeed. I also like the idea of an isolated world for Jedi, who would send members out on missions into the galaxy and when those members returned they would bring new experiences, but also find a stable "home" to return to and reconnect with the core and peace of the order's connection to the force, in balance.

The whole topic of the Jed'Aii is a little spotty. Among Star Wars fans, there are two main debated meanings for balance in the Force. Some fans believe that there is indeed two sides to the Force, a light and dark, and that over-reliance on either side causes imbalance. They would agree that the Jed'Aii were in the right to attempt to control both light and dark. However, some fans state that rather than viewing the light and dark as two equal sides, it's a description of force users interact with the Force. They say the light "side" is putting the Will of the Force before your own, thus bringing balance, and that the dark "side" is putting your own will before the Force, causing imbalance. They would say that the Jed'Aii's incorrect view of the force would cause their inevitable collapse, and that other Jedi orders simply lost their way to bureaucracy from such long periods of peace. I myself am not certain which view is correct, but it's interesting to know.

Having read one of the stories about the Je'Daii Order, it definitely seems like their attempt to find balance between Dark and Light made them a morally grey organization. Light grey, better than a lot of organizations in Star Wars or real life, but still the sort that would go up to people and tell them "I need your help, so you're going to help me or I will kill you." Make of that what you will.

My bias will forever be towards the Old Republic Era because I have spent so many years playing the KOTOR games and the MMO. I love the stories, the setting and the overall galactic conflicts brewing during this time period because it is interesting to see how this period really impacted what was to come in the "modern" time with the movies. I have always found the balance aspect of the force to be the most interesting and as you noted in the video, even when fighting each other or not fighting each other, the two sides of the force always seem to have this need for the other's presence to find their purpose. Without the darkness, the light strays from its path and without the light, the darkness tears itself apart.

@@jeremyleonjonas7657 I don't really agree with your first point. The Clone Wars era Jedi had one major conflict under their belts, while the Old Republic era Jedi had nearly 1000 years of constant warfare. But, I can't argue your point about the New Jedi Order of Legends being the most powerful. From an out of universe perspective, it's because the characters were very clearly fantasy inserts by authors and fans and so were basically demigods, but from an in-universe perspective I think it's because the order got wiped out and the new Jedi all came from Anakin's super-powered midichlorian rich blood via Luke or Leia and then were further hardened by the Yuuzan Vong conflict, which was arguably the most brutal thing to ever happen to the Galaxy.

You know, constant warfare is great and all, but it will show in your technique. Zallow is the perfect example: he is the most textbook Ataru user ever, whereas e.g. Qui-Gon heavily modified Ataru and improved upon its core sequences with Makashi. Vaapad wasn't invented on thr battlefield, but in the sparring arena. Different kind of experience, but experience nonetheless. Also: with the sole exception of the New Sith Wars leading to the Ruusan Reformations, the wars with the sith barely lasted more then a handful of years. The war leading to the Treaty of Coruscant did last for roughly 30 years but before that the jedi were peacetime operatives not to dissimilar to clone wars era jedi for 300 years. Jed'aii in my opinion had the deepest understanding of the Force in its entirety, not focusing on either aspects but recognising that both are equally important. It was repeated time and again throughout the history that the greatest of them all studied both light and the dark at some point of their lives. Furthermore the shortcomings of one side are remedied by the other: destructive overreliance on emotions could be remedied by light side practices and the reverse applies too, where emotional detachment of the light could be mitigated by dark side. The Light and the Dark are like two sides of the same coin or two ends of a stick. You can't have one without the other.

Of the versions presented here, I would definitely say the Old Republic Era Jedi are the best. Yes, they were flawed, but every time they got beaten up they picked themselves off the ground and kept trying. That's an admirable quality.

Can you do a video comparing Legends Luke’s New Jedi Order against the Jed’ai order? I just don’t like the idea of canon where they basically have this chance for a new order going back to its roots but it just gets destroyed immediately by Kylo Ren. I don’t know much about Legends after the battle of Yavin except that there was a race called the Yhuzaan Vong that brought the new republic and Jedi order to the brink of collapse, Luke married someone named Mara Jade, Palpatine returned, and I guess one of the skywalker or Solo kids turned evil like Kylo Ren did in canon. But I’d love to know if Luke’s order did survive and if it was more true to what the Jedi initially sought to be during the era of the jed’ai.

I think it was the Old Republic era in a way it was when the Jedi were at there best when being constantly tested by the Sith and the Mandalorians, many of the greatest Jedi to ever exist were in this era and the Order itself was the most active compared to the isolationist Je'daai, the lazy High Republic era, or the blind Clone Wars era Jedi. The Old Republic era Jedi took initiative they in some form or another were on the front lines of every major conflict and they had looser restrictions on entering compared to future orders. While there were times when they were weak such as against the Brotherhood of Darkness or when the Triumvirate appeared even then the best of the order would appear to restore balance.

If he was going only on canon he'd have to ignore all cool Old Republic lore. This is just a weird distinction. Tython is completely different in the live-action show, we don't see Baby Yoda causing any imbalance in The Force, neither we see any moons. Din Djarin also found it without going through any Deep Core anomalies, which is just physics fail on Star Wars' part. The Core of the galaxy is supposed to be bright.

My personal favourite would be the Clone Wars era Jedi even though they were oblivious to the sith and forget their place in the war and their involvement in politics but a few jedi of the order did demonstrate what true Jedi should be, Ahsoka, Plo Koon, Obi Wan, Quinlan Voss etc. The New Jedi order of Luke's/Surviving Jedi of Order 66 i find really interesting i love Kanan, Cal, and the survivors guilt Yoda, Kenobi and Ahsoka carry. Even the Inquisitors being fallen Dark Jedi with the majority forced into it rather than choosing it out of survival. The most successful debatably the Old Republic Jedi they literally defeated the sith in spectacular battles grand in scale and the sheer amounts of jedi and sith is amazing to see. I didn't realise there was so much militarisation. The High Republic I'm definitely getting interested in and their transition of becoming so dogmatic. Don't know anything about the Jed'aii but with their ignoring of issues of those weaker/non force sensitive goes against the peace keeping nature of the Jedi I've known.

The Je'Daii philosophy always sound the best, but at the end they were self righteus morons so high in their addiction to Tython that they constantly screw it up in any major conflict in which they had to deal with a bigger galaxy. The OR ones were interesting but so complex and with to many factions to consider them a single entity. Same with the three eras of the High Republic, being one of the most interesting ones by how much different points of view of the Force they offer (and it isn't true that they didn't face any conflict, there were 1000 years of peace because they faced and solved A LOT of conflicts, not being even the most prominent force organization in the galaxy at the half of that time). Luke's Academy still had a lot to show, but through The Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett, Rise of Kylo Ren and Sequel Trilogy we know it gave a lot of importance to attachments, and how it depended in one single person (Luke) so much that he only have to do a big mistake to bring it destruction

The Jed’aii order was the best, because its doctrine was for the individual to find the balance between both the light and dark sides of the force within themselves. By embracing both sides, the individual becomes whole within the force.

The jed"aii was the best. One must have balance in all things when dealing with the force. Allen is right though being isolated and not helping others is a huge weakness. The old republic era Jedi is a strong contender. They were militaristic and very strong force wielders. All this made them very formidable. In my opinion the most badass. However they were extremists and the darkest form the Jedi order would ever be. It's amazing that more siths wasn't created during that time.

So there was actually a chance that Revan never fell to the dark side completely at all (until SWTOR ruined the set up) but that Revan had just embraced both sides and play the longest con. To strengthen the Republic and the Jedi to prepare for the true Sith empire he discovered hiding beyond the outer rim. He did all the horrible things to save the galaxy and unite it for a greater purpose.

In terms of power, the Jedi Order of the Great Hyperspace War is probably the strongest. They not only had regular Jedi be well-versed in complicated powers like Battle Meditation, but they also fought off a Sith Empire led by a Sith Order that had all sorts of powers and magics from Battle Meditation that spawned illusions that can kill you and fool scanners, to blowing up star systems. Their victory over the Sith Empire was so total and crushing that they began genociding the Sith people and species right afterwards. If it wasn't for the quick actions of one Lord Vitiate, the Sith people and ideology as a whole would've ceased to exist. The Jedi Order of the Exar Kun War/Mandalorian Wars/Jedi Civil War era are the second strongest, since while they are not as strong as their ancient counterparts, a splinter faction from their group decimated the Mandalorians at the height of their power, and these Jedi still had powers that could allow them to dominate battlefields, like a Light Side version of Force Lightning that can devastate droids, or the ability to strip a Force-user of his ability to use the Force. Imagine if Mace Windu and his mates did that to Palpatine instead of drawing their lightsabers. That would've ended the threat of the Sith rather easily. Not to mention Jedi decimating droid armies with the Light Side would've made the lives of clone troopers much easier in the Clone Wars. In terms of social order and organization, the SWTOR-era/Great Galactic War-era Jedi Order is the best, given that they look the other way when it comes to people having relationships, and they even accept turncoat Sith without question, like Lord Scourge and Lord Praven. I suppose it had something to do with their leader, Satele Shan, having had attachments in the past, but they don't give a damn if say, the Bar'sen'thor or the Hero of Tython start dating. They're also more accepting of a military role for themselves, making them ideal in a war; they accepted the burden of military leadership rather quickly, accepting an ancient law that gives the Jedi military leadership in the Republic, and their guys have no problem wearing heavy durasteel armor suited for warfare and melee combat. In terms of freedom, the New Jedi Order seems to have it right, at least in the old canon. Luke Skywalker looked at what worked and what didn't work with the old Jedi Order, and he set up his new Jedi Order which allows Dark Side experiments and relationships so that what happened with his father Anakin wouldn't happen again in his new order. And it worked; the Jedi are capable of using Dark Side powers without getting corrupted in most cases, and the fact that they have relationships freely means that they can grow more Jedi quicker, as well as keep people in the Order who want to get married and have kids.

Balance is not 50% light and 50% dark. Balance is 100% The Force and 0% the Dark Side. George Lucas compared the Dark Side to a parasite, saying "a cancer takes without giving back, eventually causing the death of both parties." The Dark Side *is* imbalance. It cannot coexist with The Force, because it's a poison to it. The point of SW is that living selfishly (giving into the dark side) is bad and living compassionately (like a Jedi) is good. I like nuance as much as the next girl, but sometimes the nazis murdering children are actually just the bad guys and the moral is just that you shouldn't be like that.

Side question, has there ever been a number given for the percentage of force sensitives vs normal? In a galaxy of quadrillions, we have a sliding scale. During open war, it seems to be a small-ish contingent, but still enough to man both sides. During peace it seems like there's an even smaller recruit base (even w the lowering of standards during war, agricorp etc). So what happens to the others? It seems like there should be a whole lot more force traditions than has been covered even in legends. And they don't have to be "high power" in that traditional sense. The falanassi weren't, but I wouldn't underestimate em. Seems like every planet or system should have evolved, even in secret, it's own force groups. Even if theyre completely bush league. Then again, against the background of jedi/sith conflicts, it might be wise to be low profile.
