Thanks for the nice comment. My genius is hidden from the world ! I make videos now and again just for my own enjoyment and to share with friends. I hope someone gets something valuable out of them like I do from other peoples videos. We all get smarter sharing ideas. Some of the features I incorporated came directly from watching youtube videos.

It has worked very well for close to two years now. I did add some better LED lights that come on automatically when the power goes out. They run off the Generator battery so it lights up the enclosure. This way I can see in the dark to get it started. They turn off after the generator is running and can also be turned on or off with a switch. You might want to check out an autoexercise / auto start module as well.

Or have the LED Lights come on when the Shed is opened ! My desktop computer has an APC Smart-UPS 1500 mini tower from ebay... The UPS provides back up power for the CenturyLink ADSL Modem, the Dell 24-Port Switch (ebay), Dell desktop computer (NewEgg Rehab), Dell low end speakers and a 1080P monitor (big box store and showing it's age). Must find a generator at a Garage Sale or craiglist... Thank you for the video ! tjl

BRAVO.......My wife and I are going RVING for life in 2019 and I told her this was my idea and I would add sound insulation to not piss off the campers. She said I'm an idiot it will never work.......... because Generators are just LOUD ? I think your a GENIUS and this is award winning.....don't listen to her. I'm doing 3000 Honda start DB of about 60 trying to get into the 40's.

I have a whole house generator too. It will run the house and my shop at full power, not that we ever will. I suggest you add a separate propane tank just for the generator. I run two tanks, one for the house ( furnace & hot water) and the generator. I haven't been without power since the generator was installed two years ago. You guys did a good job. Thanks for posting.
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
We had the 500 gallon tank and since the video was made a second tank was added. Not so much because the generator was a concern, but we get so much snow the propane guy struggled to get to the tank and it would run low. Now we have 1000 gallons topped off each fall and by spring there is still 40 % to 50% left depending on how cold it was. The generator has had to run a lot this fall and into this winter. Lots of downed power lines from heavy wind and snow knocking down trees. It has performed wonderful and gives great piece of mind. It ran for 4 days straight recently and performed wonderful. Thanks for stopping by and watching !

So glad I stumbled upon this video. I was going to build a shed from scratch. I think I might add insulation to this unit to keep it really quit. Thanks!
@Nodularguy16 жыл бұрын
You may want to check pricing. I heard the little sheds have gone up in price and you may be able to build one for less yourself. The obvious advantage is that it looks good and was super easy to assemble. Years later the only drawback is the lid has warped a little. I had to put bolts through the plastic lid through the steel supports to make it flat again. It doesn't appear to have any damage from the heat as the fan keeps it as cool as outside air temps. Good luck on your project.

in a word....nice job!!! I can adapt this plan to my gasoline gen... having a set up like this has become necessity for those of us that still live in the "burn scar" of last years Camp Fire... what with PG&E's Safety Outages, EVERYONE is getting set up with a home generator... sometimes they last for several days, and without a gen set-up, your food will perish without power for your fridge/freezer...thanks for posting this...

I used 2" rock wool insulating batts on the inside of the shed, added a cherry bomb muffler to the exhaust and added offset air intakes and exhausts with mineral wool inside these enclosures. Make sure to add a fine screen and filter to the air intake. you might have to upsize the air intake a bit but the enclosure will remain a lot cleaner in the long run. It also helps to make a double floor with thick neoprene isolating pads between the layers. You would not believe how much sound a straight plywood floor can transmit. You can also booby trap the enclosure with a pepper gas canister if it is in the shade. I bought one from a websites called Stopthecrime.com.you can go a step further and add alarm contacts to the doors and run the wires through seal tight conduit to keep strangers from cutting wires.

Great installation! The only suggestion I have is to thermally insulate the exhaust system. That should lower the temp inside the shed, although I know it's pretty good already. Good job.
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
Thats a good suggestion. We had considered doing a thermal wrap, but when the fan moved so much air and the testing showed the temperature staying so low we decided to not go that step. My main concern in the project was heat control to prevent melting the enclosure or damaging the generator. The fan seems to move so much air it handles all concerns. If the fan died during operation that may end up being a problem. Thats probably the only failure point in the system. thanks for the nice comment and watching the video !
@rski10365 жыл бұрын
I have a commercial building with large Package Unit AC systems. Each of them have TWO fans so whenever one fan motor goes bad the other lets it run, although not with the full BTU rating. If you had a better Generator, for example a water cooled on, they have temperature sensors and shut down if too hot.
@oprahwinfrey8786 жыл бұрын
I retrofitted mine with DIY automatic start switch. It just plugs into the nearest outdoor outlet, which holds the relay shut. When the grid power cuts, the relay will release, which enables a “push to start” module that I made that turns over the generator.
@Nodularguy16 жыл бұрын
I bought a commercial version that also adds autoexercise on a schedule as well. Maybe make a video of your creation and post it ?! I will subscribe.

+Kenny a Did it so the unit was easy to access and had a home rather than drag everything out. Nearest neighbor is about a mile away. It's so quiet in the summer with the windows open and the generator was far too noisy. It still makes noise but you can sleep now with it running. Only really need it a few times per year but peace of mind is great having it all ready. Thanks for commenting and hope you are doing well !
@Ken-eh6pf8 жыл бұрын
Hello Jeff I finally put the generator together and read the manual. Nowhere does it mention an adjustment or modification to run this on Natural gas instead of LP. I suspect it may just be an orifice...need to figure this out. They're not making it easy as I would think this is not a strange application on my part.
@Nodularguy18 жыл бұрын
Kenny a I suspect you are on the right track. THe regulator is just for controlling the flow. On my kit there is a needle valve for adjusting flow. Maybe the natural gas needs a different regulator? Its been a few years so I can't remember exactly. Good Luck !

I used to use a 5 Kw Coleman back fed into my house when needed. I also used to heat with propane and had a 325 gallon tank in my yard near my unattached garage where my generator is kept and used. I was considering having it converted to propane and running a line from my tank for the convenience of not having to obtain, haul and store gasoline. When I approached the guy at the small engine shop about the conversion, he asked if my generator was big enough for what I was asking of it. I said just barely. He said that I didn't want to convert it then because to run a gasoline engine on LPG or natural gas would devalue it by at least 20% essentially converting my 5 Kw generator into a 4 Kw generator. There's 120,000 BTU's of energy in a gallon of gasoline with 10% ethanol where there's only 91,600 BTU's in a gallon of propane thereby generating less horsepower in the same engine. I now have a 7 Kw Troy Bilt generator but no longer heat with propane. We used to use gas logs in our fire place but we went back to the electric heat that came with the house. The only problem is that even my new generator won't run the 4 ton central heat / A/C unit so what I did was to pull up the propane line and move it closer to the house where my gas grill is. I cut and flared the end, (We are required to use soft copper tubing here in W. Va. for propane and black iron pipe for natural gas. I don't get the distinction.), installed a "T" and 2 aftermarket gas grill regulators. My gas grill was 40,000 BTU's and so are my gas logs. If my power goes off in the winter, I have the gas logs for backup heat.
@BushPilot4447 жыл бұрын
Go to Wally World and buy a cheap egg shell mattress. Then, cut it up to fit inside and glue it to the walls of your gen shed. Those egg shells will really absorb the sound. Where the openings are, just glue sections you cut out for the vents to the underside of the slanted roof of each side. Bingo. Much quieter.
@sgtpepper11387 жыл бұрын
The egg shell type stuff (or acoustic foam) doesn't cut down on the DBs outside (not a noticeable difference anyway), it's used to make the INSIDE sound good and dead. However, dense insulation, like stone wool would probably do a lot..

Here in Sucky Illinois the generator has to be at least 5 feet away from any building ,window, or door to be legal and pass inspection. Not sure where you live so may be different there. Love the job you did. Thanks for the vid.
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
Where I live the only inspection that was necessary or required involved me looking at it and running it after the project was complete. LOL! We don't need some tax generating half educated code enforcer to look at our projects. The fact that it is still a portable generator on wheels may negate any code ? It is not a permanent installation and can be removed in a few minutes. Thanks for taking a look at my video and I hope the gubbermint leaves you alone.

Great job...!!! I would have made some changes... I would have left the intake vent where it is, but moved the exhaust fan to the LEFT side wall of that shed... This way as the fan comes on, its sucking in air from the right side and pulling it OUT to the left... This way the air flows directly in the path of the generator for max cooling. Next i would have routed the exhaust fumes from the generator to the same side as the exhaust fan.. This way the fan is pulling air from inside as well as helping PUSH the exhaust gas further away from the shed...

Thank you for the kind comment. Since making this video we have added LED lights that come on when the power goes out inside the enclosure and an auto exercise auto start control box that is WIFI enabled. I am in the middle of a solar grid tie system and battery back up system with supplemental micro wind turbines. I have been recording and taking pictures so that video will come out in a few months when the projects are done.
@simplelifediy17727 жыл бұрын
Great idea, thanks. I think I would only add a small solar panel to the roof to maintain the battery. I also like the LEDs inside, and would be tempted to add LED motion lights outside the unit to deter theft. It is kind of sad that the whole time I watched this, I kept wondering about theft. So maybe I would add an anchor to the concrete pad and chain the generator to it... lol you open a lot of ideas to options
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
Since the video we put a screw eye into the base and locked the generator to the eyelet with a chain and padlock. Truthfully in our location it would be noticed if anyone came near our place. Additionally I have Foscam cameras all over the property with motion detection that sends alerts to my phone and tablets. Since we are on a private road in the middle of nowhere any vehicle that comes down the road is like a flare going off. So far nothing has ever been monkeyed with on our property. But as the saying goes. Locks keep honest people honest ! Thanks for the kind words and good luck to us all on the round ball of mud !
@simplelifediy17727 жыл бұрын
It is sad that you have to prepare for theft, but it is a sign of the times I guess... We live off of a few dirt/gravel roads ourselves, and you are right about cars that drive up. Most people who come up our drive, immediately get out, hands in the air, screaming "don't shoot"... lol Well except for the FedEx and UPS guys... they are used to it

@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
You are correct that it could pull exhaust back into the enclosure, but no one is inside breathing and the fresh air grill is huge. The fan pulls so much fresh air through the enclosure that the engine operates fine. We tried operating it without the fan and it worked just fine as well. The temperature did rise more of course so we make sure we have the fan operational. I am sure some exhaust does make its way back into the enclosure as you state. So far it hasn't been an issue. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Good luck on your project as well. It's fun to make your own versions of things.

I will say a trifuel is a good idea. NG will stop flowing in any situation that the power is out for more than 2 or 3 days, with this, you can still have power as long as your other fuel sources last!
@Nodularguy18 жыл бұрын
You are totally correct. The LP tank is a 500 gallon unit which sounds like a lot till you review usage from bills and calculate how much you will need to last month after month. We can always use gasoline but that is also even shorter supply as it takes many many gallons. The idea was to be able to live through short disruptions on LP and always have gasoline on hand for back up in case LP runs short. Since the video a second 500 gallon LP tank has been installed and filled. It is ONLY used as a back up storage tank and we switch between the tanks to keep it fresh. If the grid went away this would only last a few months even with cycling and conservation. It is amazing how much fuel it takes to create daily usage electrical needs.
@frogpondfarm7128 жыл бұрын
Wrong. NG will flow indefinatly as long as the pumps are running at the station. The pumps are run on solar and NG as well so unless someone blows up the pumping station, NG will flow

I bought a generic generator control off Amazon. It had auto exercise and autostart features. Was pretty easy to install and handles everything automatically. Runs the generator twice a month for 30 minutes to keep it in good shape. If the power goes out it starts after a 1 minute delay. You can set all this up with dip switches on the unit. I forget the brand but it should be easy to find on Amazon or google autocontrol for generator.

Wish I would have seen this one about 6 months ago... I used the same enclosure from Sam's and it still gets hot with two vents and the exhaust vented out. If I don't build a small metal shed we will add a fan next time I visit my mom.
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
Our enclosure is on the East side of the pole barn so a good portion of the day it is in shade. Even without the fan it still ran pretty cool, but the addition of the large fan makes it super cool. You may find you need to add venting to match your fans airflow. We had to increase the vent size as the fan was creating a negative pressure in the enclosure. Good luck with your project.

Just one small suggestion: it might be wise to fix some reflective foil on the inside of the panels closest to the exhaust pipework, to protect against the radiant heat.
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
I was a bit worried about that as well so I made measurements with the enclosure completely closed. I was pleased that the temperature of the walls interior never rose more than a few degrees higher than external temperature. The fan moves a ton of air and keeps it all very cool. It was run in August for 6 days straight after a large storm took out utility power. Outside temperatures were 90 to 100 F and the interior never got hotter than a few degrees more. You could put your hand on the walls interior and hold it there forever. I think part of the help in this area is the walls are double walled with an air gap between the interior and exterior walls. The fan moves a ton of air across the entire generator and is sized so big it keeps air changeover very often. Good luck in your projects as well.

The fan blows the heated air out between the generator enclosure and the polebarn. There is about a 12 inch gap between the two. Luckily little snow can make it back there as the pole barn overhang protects the gap from any snow. My only concern was an animal finding a nice safe place to hide with some heat. So far no illegal tenants have moved in.

Good Question. 89 DB at idle with cabinet open / 103 db when right next to exhaust with cabinet open / 89 DB with cabinet closed right by doors / 103 DB right by exhaust with cabinet closed / Standing 50 ft away right by house window 71 db / inside house by same window 51 db (House closed up and central air running) / Upstairs in bedroom by window closest to generator 45db / Basically you can carry on a normal conversation right by enclosure with it closed up. I think you may find it is pretty quiet in the enclosure. Standing about 5 feet away you can carry on a normal conversation without yelling. Deflecting the exhaust down made a huge difference. Also the mechanic internals of the generator make a bunch of noise so when they are inside the enclosure which is double wall the noise is trapped inside. I think you will really like it. Actually you could probably build an enclosure from anything and the nosie will get cut way down. Good luck to you on your project ! As a side note that generator has an adjustment few know about to raise the HZ and voltage. I bumped mine up ever so slightly so that after a long run the voltage was a solid 125 at 60 to 61 hz on my killawatt meter. I adjusted the generator to put out 127 volts at 61 hz to achieve the final result at the house with a 50 ft run of cord. I imagine running on Propane I have reduced the 10KVA down to a lower max output but truthfully we never go over 6000 watts even with the central air running. Hope you have a great time with your project.~Jeff

Great setup! I'm building nearly the same exact thing except I'm using a 12.5k Westinghouse generator. Have you had any issues with the exhaust and the plastic box? I'm concerned with 2 things, the vibration when the generator is under heavy load and the heat from the exhaust melting the plastic.
@Nodularguy15 жыл бұрын
If you look at the exhaust closely I put a metal through wall vent into the box. I put the exhaust tube through the center of it and used sheet metal screws to center it in the opening. Fresh air moves all around it and there is an air gap of about half an inch . I have seen other videos of solutions for this and some have better ideas. It has been 3 years since we made this set up and no issue with melting. Vibration is a non issue. The generator sits on the 3/4 plywood deck and still has it rubber tires. I fastened it done with an eye hook and some blocking. No issue after three years. Good luck on your project !
@advanced-electronic7 жыл бұрын
You are exhausting on the incoming ventilation side of the shed. Not a great place to do so because the fan is drawing the fresh air from the side and exhausting it with your fan towards your home. The exhaust is most likely getting drawn into the air inlet, then blowing it out toward the house because you have positive induction ventilation that is forcing the air into the incoming inlet. You should probably add an additional automotive muffler between the factory exhaust and reroute the exhaust to the roof of the enclosure with an exhaust cap that will raise from the exhaust pressure, either that or exhaust in a direction away from your home instead of toward the air inlet. .
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
We had considered that in the design, but determined with so much fresh air being brought in it would be fine. After two years of running it on and off for days at a time we were pleasantly validated. The exhaust is deflected down and the fresh air grill has a side baffle. I am sure some exhaust does make it into the enclosure but has no effect. Temperature readings have always remained low and the engine runs great. I cannot run the exhaust through the roof as the top opens for access. We played around with a few automotive mufflers and they made very little difference. If you watch guys on youtube that have done it and actually measured the results it only drops the DB a little. For the cost and the size in the enclosure we decided to omit any extra exhaust baffling. Since the exhaust points down and the engine noise is captured in the enclosure it is surprisingly quiet. Inside the house you cant here it run only 50 ft away with the windows closed.

I think I paid US carburation around $200 4 years ago. It came with everything needed. Haven't really looked since then. I wanted to cut down the noise but also provide a central spot for the generator storage and hook up. In my case it is 40 ft from the house and with the windows closed you can't even hear it run. The exhaust is pointed away from the house but most of the noise comes from the generator itself. With the unit all closed up you can talk in a normal voice standing right next to it.

I ran the exhause through the inner pipe and secured it with screws that pinched it from four spots to hold it. There is an air gap between the exhaust and the inner pipe and another air gap between the inner and outer pipe of the through wall. We have run it many hours with no problem. I will say since I made this video I have seen some better solutions to many of the things I did here. Keep watching for them on KZfaq. Hi Jeff, what a great video! Thank you for taking the time. Your explanations are great. I do have couple of questions. On the muffler you mention that you use an "automotive exhaust collector " with rope for a wood stove... I understand the rope for a wood stove, yet what is, and where do I find an automotive exhaust collector? For a specific car? any links or suggestions for it? Thanks again!
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
It is a fitting that attaches to the exhaust manifold of a vehicle that basically is the start of a cars exhaust system. It has a wide flange on one end and the other end is round. You can buy them at just about any auto supply and there are many sizes. basically measure the outlet of your generator exhaust and get a flange that matches. The auto guys should be able to give you a few to look at and measure at the counter. I then used the rope seal between the factory muffler and the flange. Using self tapping screws and washers to hold it to the muffler. Hope that helps. Good luck on your project.

By enclosing that type of air coolef engine you change the open air flow of air around it causing it to run at a much higher temperature which in turn will wear out the engine quick. I admire your idea and I guess you can just buy another generator when it goes out and I bet your neighbors like you more because you can share electricity and they don't have to listen to that thing screaming away for hours at a time .
@MYTOYMAKERZ7 жыл бұрын
AJK always needs more info. - = = = The air flow around the engine may have changed but the amount the engine draws in hasn't. Your thinking is in a way correct but = picture the engine running outside with no wind at all. These small engines have their own way of circulating air around and through them by way of the cooling fins on their flywheels. They do not depend on a radiator like a liquid cooled engine does. If you were to block or alter the airflow to the radiator the cooling system would over heat and possibly cause engine damage. But air cooled engines as long as it's flywheel is able to move air over their cooling fins by way of the flywheels fins they do just fine. But like a radiator on a liquid cooled engine if the fins are covered with grass or dust or what have you that does not allow them to dissipate heat then damage can be done over time. He made sure there is plenty of air flow inside his box so as the engines fly wheel can do its job along with the engines cooling fins. His engine will not wear out any quicker than if it was not in its box. I install full house stand by generators and they are basically designed the way he built his box. Some of them don't even have a cooling fan other than the flywheels with their fins and the engines cooling fins to cool them. So why would he need to buy a new generator any sooner than if it was outside a box. Your making this to complex when actually it's a very simple theory behind all of this. Plus by him using synthetic engine oil the engine will run up to 3 to 7% cooler.

Jeff... how are you piping the exhaust through the enclosure wall? Wall thimble" or "exhaust thimble"?
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
We used a double wall vent that is typical for on demand water heaters. The exhaust pipe is smaller than the inner pipe so we drove screws through the inner pipe in 6 spots that center the exhaust in the middle of the inner pipe and tightened them to hold the exhaust pipe.

I’m thinking about doing something similar but it will be plugged into a auto transfer switch and a simple auto start kit will start it when power loss is detected. Really nice installation. Did you have to re-set rpm stop to compensate for power loss when burning propane to maintain 60 Hz under load? Best regards.
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
No the generator will maintain the correct RPM and corresponding frequency. I actually tweaked it up a little to compensate for the long distance to the house and voltage drop more than frequency loss. 127 volts / 62hz at the generator is a solid 125 volts/ 61hz at the house 75 feet away under load. The generator doesn't care what its being fed. I would suspect that if I got to the 10KW rated limit there would be a loss of ability as Propane can't feed the BTU requirement, but honestly if you check your usage you will find you never come close to that demand. The most the house uses with air conditioner running is 3000 watts. I do recommend sizing up the generator at least 1.5 over your max draw load. This way it never struggles. Of course the larger the beast, the more it eats.

Ive heard a few people mention that they had trouble with running a generator on propane. I have an application for a generator where I will have to run it every 4-5 days through a winter. I didnt see what your application is so I didnt see how often you use the generator but any problems with running propane? did it increase the amount of service or other breakdowns out of ordinary?
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
Actually it ran better on Propane. We use it for emergency back up power and in our area it runs four or five times a year, but can run for days on end till power is restored. 5 days is typical. Propane runs very clean compared to gasoline so it will also be easier on your oil. The engine will run the same temperatures and speeds so really it doesn't care what is feeding it. Forklifts have run for many years on propane and typically you get many hours use out of them. Propane has been an industrial fuel for a very long time for the reason it works and is easy to store. Propane does have a bit less BTU than gasoline so you will tend to need more propane than gasoline to run the same number of hours. If people had trouble I would think the install was incorrect, the wrong equipment was used or it wasn't adjusted correctly. The guys at US Carburetion can get you on the right path. Even in very cold temperatures the propane ran very well. Good luck on your project !

Have you thought about adding any sound dampening material to the insides of the enclosure? The quieter it is to everyone the less people who will know about it.(thieves) they have been stealing generators by waiting until nighttime and using a running lawnmower to trick you into thinking the generator is still running while they take it away. Worst part is they tend to use your own mower to trick you.
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
WOW! That's a dirty trick ! The unit is very quiet in the enclosure with it all closed up. We have it down to 44 db . You can lock the enclosure as well and it is chained and padlocked to the deck via an eye screw into the base.. The most noise comes from the exhaust which is baffled. It is pretty quiet and you can't hear it run in the house. I have researched other methods for making it more quiet, but have other projects i'm working on. I have a module attached to the breaker panel that alerts when the power is lost. This was done in case the unit developed a problem since it runs so quiet. If thieves decided to steal it they would have hard work and the module would tell me the power went out. Since my bedroom looks right out at the enclosure they would receive rock salt at high speed first and we would decide if an escalation to lead was needed based on compliance.I live in the woods miles from anyone and have defenses accordingly. The dogs would bite the hell out of them as well.

So why would you want to pipe the exhaust right to where the intake air screen is? You are basically sucking the exhaust fumes right into the intake screen as soon as the fan turns on in the back of the shed. Is that a really good engineering design?
@Nodularguy17 жыл бұрын
It makes no difference. the engine runs fine and it doesn't get hot
@BoopSnoot7 жыл бұрын
As an engineer, one quick modification suggestion: You have an excellent idea of using a hooded grill on the right side, and you should mirror it on the exhaust side as well which is also visually appealing for symmetry. Just have your exhaust pointed just like you have it, but pointed out of the exhaust grill, and your grill and little vent cover will deflect the exhaust pulses into the ground, drastically reducing the noise level. This will also greatly improve the cross ventilation, as you now have a smooth path of travel for the cool intake charge to exit the enclosure. Along the same lines, your intake vent on the right side, opposite the exhaust, should have the fan on it. That way air is moving smoothly right to left with the coolest intake on the right and the exhaust and residual heat exiting on the left.

watch at the 4:50 and 5:30 marks. I used a through wall dryer outlet fitting through the wall of the enclosure. I drove four screws through the inside into the center of the opening. I used a small piece of automotive car exhaust pipe inserted into the dry outlet. Using the four screws I centered the exhaust pipe in the opening and snugged it in place. The flexible stainless car exhaust tube connected it all together. Any space around the outlet was packed with firewool used in wood burning stove door seals. THis way the exhaust is isolated from the enclosure by a metal fitting with an air gap and sealed on both sides with the firewool. The generator ran for over an hour and you could put your hand on the enclosure next to the exhaust and it is warm but not hot. This also helps with keeping the radiant heat away from the enclosure wall. I guess I would recommend metal and gaps for air. Its hard to explain better than this for me. Hopefully the video helps. Good luck on your project !
