In this episode, we get back to exploring the seas of Mexico. We repair the 11KVA Onan Cummins genset whilst at anchor. After this tough repair we head Northerly in light winds. Remember; it is the light wind performance that is equally, if not more important than storm sailing (fuel consumption). Important for the wallet too!
As always, we try to break it up with some hints and tips. We address the opinion of a catamaran salesman..... albeit briefly
Dedicated to our friends Arthur and his wife Loretta. "Carry on!".
James, Evangelina and Elbe.
PS. Thanks for all your helpful comments and advice.

A clear plastic strainer is a great idea because you could inspect it for pieces and change the impeller before 100% failure

Great video. I learned a lot. Re: the swim ladders: James of Sailing Triteia YT Chan. (Lost his rudder halfway, had to steer with a drogue) mentioned in a chat that his most dangerous moment was when he dove on his anchor at sea, got tired in the cold water and was almost too tired to clamber back on board. What swim ladder would be best for your grandmother? That might be the one we should have. (How about one the dog could use to get back on?) Propping up the ladder. Neat trick. As a DIY kind of person with bits of plywood and nonsense around my house - while on boats I've noticed: not enough hand holds, not enough places to tie strings and stuff too. For instance, every cabin should be able to support a clothes line, every shower should be able to hang foul weather gear. I've got a safety bar in my bath/shower at home, but have never seen on on a boat. The Fairy soap trick. There are two ways to lubricate a rubber o-ring, silicone grease - which will always be a bit slippery, and ammonia which like the Fairy soap will be slippery only when it's wet. (It can be used in a water connection - just not drinking water. I learned the ammonia trick sliding grips onto handlebars. Ammonia is a Base (slippery when wet) Very slippery, but quickly dries and locks in place. (Grease on the handle grip would slide off just as easily as it slides on.) Ammonia also works if critters are gnawing at the wiring and hoses underneath your car. Tastes bitter when licked. I sprayed a garden hose raccoons were chewing every night. 3-4 years later the ammonia has to be long gone, but they still haven't touched it. This last application probably has no use on a boat - maybe on the dinghy - if shore critters are a problem.

I had exactly the same issue with the height of my engine sea water strainer. Trying to punch a tide in a stiff head wind to get round the point to get into Cherbourg Harbour in France we put the engine on to give us that bit extra and the engine kept over heating but only on one tack. It was a few weeks later that I suddenly woke in the night to with the thought that the strainer was higher on one tack as it was fixed on the port side slightly. lowered it then tested it whilst motor sailing and bingo water flowed perfectly lol. Just don't forget to shut off the sea cocks when checking the strainer. Love your dog by the way.

The blades on impeller will auto flip to proper direction. Can’t put it in backwards. You have room inside sound shield for a strainer to catch broker rubber. They ware fast so every other oil change change the impeller. A Pain but it keeps Murphy away. Also ZINKS don’t last long in exchangers. Check with oil change. If you exchanger develops pin hole leaks in an emergency you can add 1/4 cup of oatmeal and it will stay cool. I did it crossing from Kauai to Alaska. Help up for 2 weeks adding when needed.

In my experience with outboard impellers, the teeth will orient themselves the correct way as soon as it starts spinning. Should be the same in your situation. Hope that helps.

HiJames looks like you got some good feedback on your impeller issues. You also mentioned your fuel filters and the necessity to take plenty of spares. There is a neat solution to constantly changing your fuel filters on the engine or generator itself (invariably awkward and messy). Install a massively oversized (200 gph) Racor filter in the fuel line in a convenient/accessible spot in front of the engine/generator fuel filter and put a 2 micron filter in the Racor. Because the Racor is designed for a much larger fuel demand you will have no problem with supplying polished fuel to your engine/generator. You won't have to change the engine/generator filter except at your convenience. The Racor filters are cheap and easy to change. You probably want to put a couple of in line valves before and after the Racor to prevent any fuel bleeding off and a small jug of diesel to top up the Racor after a change. I have done it in the worst conditions imaginable and I don't have that beautiful ship's engine room (yet)! In case of really dirty fuel in your tank I would recommend carrying a few 5 and 10 micron filters as well.
@carryonsailing

Another awesome suggestion from you Oliver, many thanks. There is already a Racor filter upstream but not as large nor fine as you suggest. The offshore nature of things I tend to be conservative and diligent with regards to servicing.

I find that removing the two hose clamps pull hose out of the way then remove the two bolts holding the the pump onto the block is the most simple way for that job. then it is easy to clean everything and replace the new impellor and put back on.

Hey James, if you have problems reaching the bolt on that impeller cap, it might be easier if youd swap those with Hex Socket Cap Screws. Then you can use your ratchet with a long Allen extension.

For your hands of kryptonite moment - couldn't you use a socket set with an extension on it ? Usually you don't need to worry about putting the fins in the housing the right way round - as soon as it starts turning they'll flip round the right way (there might be a direction of turn marked on it with an arrow but not always). It's always worth checking waterflow to the impeler if it fails even a brief interruption of waterflow leads to it getting very hot and failing. Good job getting all the bits of the impeller out and on getting it all done, not a pleasant job when you're dripping in sweat! Lovely boat and a great video - I'm very jealous!

Tom, thanks for taking the time to write to us. It is kind of hard to see from the video but you can't get that spanner onto the head. Some other very experienced viewers have suggested swapping the bolts out for hex head screws which does make a lot more sense. The genset will cut off if there is inadequate flow albeit not without loosing an impellor. Thanks again.

@@carryonsailing I’d stay away from the Allen head, since those have a tendency to strip out. Go with a torx, or get a longer bolt with spacers beneath the bolt head.
