My personal opinion is that these range tests should be testing from an indicated 100-0%. As you even mentioned, that buffer below 0% is not constant, depending on battery wear, temperature, etc. Plus, unless you have an OBD dongle and app active to monitor it, you have no idea how much battery you have left below 0% indicated.

Love watching the many review videos you guys have done! Have helped with knowledge and opinions on which brands are best and which aren’t. 2 questions: 1. is the Chevy blazer on your to do list? 2. Do you guys plan to do any road trips thru the Midwest? I would love to see how range anxiety plays a roll on one of the major interstates (I-64) because I don’t see many electrify americas in the Midwest besides Chicago and mainly highly populated areas. I understand it’s a growing charging station company, but I feel like most out of specs videos are where you guys don’t experience range anxiety due to the accessibility of being out of the west coast. (Food for thought. Would love to hear what you have to say!) Thanks for what you guys do!

Could you please talk about the software experience in all the cars you review. I’ve been testing a few cars and no one on KZfaq talks about software experience - we should realize that software experience is becoming the key differentiator here. 2 elements you should talk about: app experience (entering the car, controlling the car via app, driver profiles etc.), in car infotainment experience ( navigation experience, charging station routing, charging information etc.)

At 8:00, when you mentioned the car said you couldn't drive on that road, I had a similar experience with my Ioniq 5: a road nearby is a regular two-way suburban road by the car warned my I was driging the wrong way of a oneway. Only way to get rid of the warning in the cluster was to go in the car map (not CarPlay) and dismiss the error. There's no quick button to report a problem.

But can you please keep it in I-drive when doing the tests. As most, (or atleast myself) would always keep it in that for 1 pedal driving. I also agree with some other comments, the tests shouldn't go below 0%, I've had to tow before after running out on the highway, I don't recommend anyone try test or drive below 0% huge inconvenience. Great Videos 👍

@dennislyon5412
@dennislyon5412 Жыл бұрын
This Genesis car, along with EV6 and Ioniq 5 siblings, has 0/1/2/3 for regen levels - each pull of the paddle indexes to the next nevel . Regen 3 is pretty good electric braking. No paddle shifting (gears).
@garycross90

@dennislyon5412
@dennislyon5412 Жыл бұрын
@@garycross90 - regen braking has a similar feel to the braking effect you’d get if you downshifted when slowing in a manual trans car. In that sense the engine has more compression strokes per second so the engine offers more resistance, and the car slows down more than it would in a higher gear.
@logicalChimp

@@garycross90 If you're looking for engine-braking effect, just put it on max-regen - you only need to play with the paddles if you want to switch between coasting and engine braking.

@@logicalChimp I want to use the regen paddle for variable regen braking during a turn approach without using mechanical brakes, not as a setting switch. I want to use the throttle and regen for variable speed gain and retard to "work" the car into the attitude I want. I think GM's regen on demand will give me that.

Kyle, if these range tests are for the benefit of others, especially those interested in buying an EV as their next car, why is it that you take it below zero percent if basically no owner is going to do that? Just wondering.
@tazeat
@tazeat Жыл бұрын
Not much different than doing a range test with gas until the engine dies. It's good to know the real max and build your buffer on top of there rather than not know how much buffer there really is and be adding buffer on top of that.

I get why people run in eco mode, but how is the passing power when using it? One of the main things I like about my Tesla is that when I want to pass someone on a road trip it is all there, no changing drive modes or pushing a "nos" button required. What's the "normal" mode range like that has all power available? I like the look of the EV6, but the idea of driving around in gutless mode is about as exciting as my Hyundai Tucson.
@logicalChimp
@logicalChimp Жыл бұрын
Usually, 'eco mode' in an EV just softens the pedal response - it doesn't usually reduce the output of the motor, or so I understand.
@Antiguan_Dart
@Antiguan_Dart Жыл бұрын
@@logicalChimp In the UK I have the GV60 RWD version and that is exactly the case - the throttle response is heightened such that the car actually accelerates a bit going from ECO to SPORT without any further press of the accelerator. Essentially the accelerator mapping changes - a smaller press delivering more power. The 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds quoted acceleration figure and the 350 Nm torque available from 0 rpm (almost the same torque as a Nissan 350Z at 4800rpm) means it is plenty responsive enough for over taking and joining motorways in my experience.

I am impressed by the Hyundai/Kia products. I do have a question that this review prompted: why are most of these EVs built on RWD or AWD rather than FWD platforms? This goes for the Hyundais, Ford MachE, Tesla, and others. There is no technical reason I can think of (unless the desire to advertise a frunk outweighs winter driving.) Have you tested RWD examples in snow and ice? I ask because I live in Michigan and RWD is usually the worst option in the winter and it feels like they are essentially forcing people to pay to upgrade to AWD.
@Antiguan_Dart
@Antiguan_Dart Жыл бұрын
I’ve heard RWD is the better handling dynamics option in good weather if only a single motor is being used. And that contrary to popular belief changing to snow tyres is the single best solution to winter driving much more so than having front wheel drive. And particular for EV because the motor module is so light compared to an ICE engine the benefit of weight over the driving wheels of a FWD configuration is lost in an EV.

These electronic side video screen mirrors are brilliant in low light or in wet weather , give the best blind spot coverage and of course, minimise the wind noise due to its much smaller size. Currently, not everyone can transition to EV’s easily for a multitude of reasons but they’re getting a lot better very quickly. The problem I have with hybrids is the fact that with hybrids, you’ve got two complex technologies stuffed into an automobile. And the ICE engine is clearly the most complex of the two with the same old predictable breakdowns and routine maintenance you see in every ICE vehicle on the road.

@@bluedog9935 Exactly. I read someplace that less than 20% of PHEV owners ever plug in. They are a joke, especially as to qualifying for tax credits.

@@xsleep1 It’s ridiculous that they were included at all. This will encourage legacy auto to continue to drag their feet on making the transition to better BEV’s. Of course we don’t want perfect to be the enemy of good but this bill could have been so much better…

It is good to see that these vehicles being exposed for what they really are as not being practical at this time. Hopefully this will change in the near future.

'exposed'? As Kyle said, it hit its stated EPA 'combined' range solely whilst doing 70mph on the highway. Yeah, the range isn't great - but at least they put up pretty accurate EPA numbers, so they weren't exactly hiding it.

My petrol Mazda Rx-8 229 bhp of a few years ago in the UK only had a motorway range of 275 miles per full tank. I think approx. 250 miles on the motorway for these first batch of BEV is very commendable and usable with the caveat that they charge fast so 800V architecture is a must for a road trip vehicle in my book.

@@logicalChimp yes exposed. Over priced, too short a range, too long to charge, and battery life too short.

@@Antiguan_Dart Same here... I had an older tuned-up RX7, and was lucky to get 250 miles on a tank (80 litre!) And yes, faster charging should definitely be the goal, rather than more range, imo

Only traveling 235 mile @ 70mph is hilarious. M3lr can go 300 miles @ 80 mph and uses both motors.

I own a Model 3 Long Range and there's no way it'll do 300 miles at 80mph. With the base wheels it will probably do it at 70mph. It'll do maybe 260 at 80mph.
