Genie Garage Door Opener doesn't close. Genie garage door opens fine, but does not shut. Garage door closes a little and back returns. Ground sensing issue.

Your 5-year-old video is still bringing joy to the lives of many. Everything I found online and on Genie's site blamed the sensors which were actually well aligned and working fine. I followed your guidance and after a bit of testing, it looks like the problem is resolved. After months of frustration with this thing, it's finally working properly and the total cost of repair was $0. Thanks!

My door worked opening and closing with the inside wall button but intermittently failed to open and close from the cars and the remote that came with the opener when it was installed 22 years ago. I opened the case for the electrical side of the opener and loosened and tightened all the screws that I could see that had electrical connections. At least 2 screws were loose enough that they could be tightened 1/2 - 3/4 of a turn. After tightening all screws both car openers worked as did the opener remote. Thanks for the tip - you saved me at least $200 for a service call!!!

Thank you so much for sharing this video! All other videos I found pointed to the safety sensors not being aligned properly. After verifying that there was nothing wrong with my sensors, I kept searching and found your video. My garage door would open normally but when attempting to close, no sound, movement or light blinks would happen. So I found your video, opened up the back cover, disconnected/reconnected the two plugs and loosened/tightened the ground screw, and everything went back to normal! I'm sure you saved me around $200. Would love to buy you beer or coffee! THANKS!

Thanks a lot! Took me about 10 minutes to get it fixed. It wasn’t the ground, but it was a wire in front part of motor next to the right light bulb that wasn’t connected right. This genie is 12 years old. I thought for sure I needed a new one.

Awesome video! Thank you for making it! This solved my issue as well. I had a slightly different version but once I opened it up, I reseated the ribbon cable and other wide connector and then loosened and rotated the ground wire to clear any corrosion (none was evident but still worth doing). Plugged it in and all is well! Thank you again!!

Thanks James for posting this I just removed one from a home that was getting a garage upgrade to a permitted apartment with it's on address believe it or not. But it's a genie and its about 10 years old. This was my first garage door Removal/Install but with the help of you tube and a dewalt impact it wasn't that hard. I basically just had to make a few changes because the old garage door at my house was a really old and very heavy spring loaded wooden framed garage door that was very very dangerous. The side spring was Under immense pressure. And I speak on that just as a reminder to anyone messing with the springs that you need to be very very extremely very careful. Because if I would have made one wrong move o would have chopped my arm off. I removed 2 of 3 lag screws before moving my impact to the top out of harms way and it literally threw my arm back and slung the impact across the room. (I was thanking God and still am that I moved my arm because it came down with about 2,000 lbs. Of force. It would have been very ugly. So back to your post. My close option isn't working it raises up very smoothly and regardless whether it works or not(your fix) I do appreciate you taking time to post because it is very helpful to many people. Its amazing the task I've completed by looking up these post. Keep posting and I will too. So our lives can be less troubled and hopefully learn something and save some money along the way. Kudos James.

SOLVED: What I found was that it was NOT the grounding wire for me. But this video did help me solve the issue. I have a Genie 2028. Same issue, will try to go down for 2 inch or so, then jerk back up. Here is the Problem and Solution for me: Problem: 1 of the wire that was connected to the back of the unit that goes to the sensor was loose. Solution: Gently pull each wire to see if any are loose, then replug that wire back in and make sure its tight. (This may seem obvious but it was not, all wires were all the way in and you will not know until you pull one by one. When I initially took off the cover, checked all the ground and unplug and replug all the connectors and tested the unit, it worked great. Then when i reinstall the cover, the unit had the same issue again. I did that a few times and the exact thing happened, it was driving me nuts. Then finally I decided to pull each one of those wires in the back of the unit that was connected to the sensor, Whoalla, one of those wire was loose. Reinstalled the cover and everything is working great! What happen was when I removed the cover, it caused the loose wire to have a temporarily connection allowing the unit to work and as soon as I reinstall the cover the temporarily connect broke off.) Hope this can help anyone with the same issue.

Thank you James... i was having the same EXACT issue, did what you suggested and now it works. I wasn't so fortunate. Opened it up, doesn't have the ground screw like yours. So I popped those connectors you said someone else suggested. When I powered it back up completely inoperable.
