I was stationed in Taiwan in 74 , we were on our way back from town it had been raining all day and was still raining as we headed back. The lights were dim everybody was quiet in their own seat no one's speaking to anyone else. At the back of the bus of young man turned on his boombox and the song A Rainy Night in Georgia began to play. A silent yes could be heard over the entire bus as the rain poured down outside. When the song ended the young man turned off his boombox and quietly said wow. A beat later the bus erupted in Applause and cheers. This memory has stuck with me all these years. I would love to see what you do when the song.

Such an immense honor to have a full conversation with this man about his music, life, career, approach to vocal technique, blasting low notes, what his voice type is, the behind-the-scenes scoop on VoicePlay and his involvement with them, and much more. I know for a FACT that you all will absolutely love this conversation! What other guests would like to hear me speak to on the channel/podcast?

Are you familiar with the Reactor/voice teacher Lolli Wren? (KZfaq channel "The Fairy Voice Mother"). She reacts to all genres s of music, and is working on her masters on vocal pedagogy, with a focus on vocal track anatomy. I scrolled back to the beginning of her channel, just now, and she started out during the first wave of COVID lockdowns in the UK. One of her first videos was how to make yourself understood through a mask without tiring out your voice. I just think you two would have a fun time chatting together.

He sounds great live, I was there when they came here in the Philippines. You just don't hear his voice you can feel them. I don't know why he think he is lesser than Tim, when they are actually of the same league it's just a matter of people's preference ( I prefer geoff's bass because I'm not that fond of country music)

@@minami-s6744 I would love to be able to see them live. If only just to tell them how much they've been able to help me work on my business. I've been binging their music for about a month now and I've been able to finish my Logo for my business in that time when before listening to their music I was struggling to find the inspiration to work on it (for five years). Their music has been the bridge it seemed I needed to get my executive disfunction under control so I can actually focus on the things I needed to get my business together.

I appreciate very much that Geoff would never waste our time and put anything in the internet forever which would not be worth it. He is very grounded without having star allure. I even think he does not really know how great musician and person he is! He, and his crew, bring so much joy, and sometimes sad feelings, but always authentic, to many, many people. I'm a child of the nineties who grew up with Metal and Grunge. I didn't listen to a capella before I found Voiceplay on KZfaq after I became a Castellucci fan after hearing Sixteen Tons and the Halloween stuff. I listen to it in my playlist everyday and it adds something important to my life quality.

Geoff I HEAR the bass in your speaking voice. Just like with JD Sumner and Peter as well. JD is in a class if his own though clearly. But I worked at an opera company as an office manager and Jack of all trades seeings that we were non profit so I known bass voices. You have it Geoff. Seriously. The thing that I have never heard is the range you have. The high notes come so easily it is crazy. You are a phenom literally

What a wonderful conversation to get to listen in on! Geoff seems like the sweetest guy, and I think you did a great job of keeping things on track so that you could get to as much as possible within the time you had. I feel a little sad hearing about how much of a grind their work schedule is, and how much the numbers determine what kind of music he puts out. I know that a job is a job even if you love it, and it's great that they have the skills to take care of so much of the production themselves--I guess I just wish for them that they didn't need to go quite so hard, because I want them to keep loving what they do! And of course, the tension between an artist's vision and what will sell has always been around, but there's something that seems particularly soulless about algorithm-influenced metrics having that kind of influence. I'm glad you asked about how he makes his choices about putting his own spin on songs! I love that the answer is as simple as "you sit in a room and talk to yourself and sing everything you can think of."

1) I’m super curious what the early Voiceplay members did for a living before Voiceplay started making enough to be a full time job. 2)Geoff, my dude, if you said hello to me and I didn’t know anything else about you I’d still have you pegged as a bass. Peter’s dead-one-magnificent bass voice-and I enjoy hearing you talk almost as much as hearing you sing. (You have such a smooth voice-it’s awesome.). 3) Super interview, Peter! This was a lot of fun to watch. I have trouble finding a full hour to watch anything but I’m glad I worked it out for this.

Hi Peter, thank you for the best video you have released. Jealousy is swelling in me still !!! Geoff comes over so genuine & humble, a proud father, husband & loyal to his colleagues to whom they have found harmony to work & play together for many years. Shows commitment. "thank you for your reactions". A true gentle giant, not in the least. Inhibited when stating how they manage all their work lode. It’s as if they should be producing and following through how they create Everything by themselves and not hand it out to other external links who might not understand the way they work. The present group are so. Complimentary to one another & was interested to hear how you have to plan especially within your Opera world. He showed genuine amazement whilst singing on your need to project & spread your voice throughout the theatre. Geoff showed genuine amazement. How, how, how did you get this interview??!!! I am still gob smacked after thirty minutes of hearing you. You look like the cat that had licked the cream. I really hoped that Don Giovanni haa been a huge success, a wonderful role and one of the best Opera's. A hearty congratulations on 107k subscribers on noting comment. Being a 70 yr old technophobe podcasts are a new discovery for me too and this has to be the best so far. Fabulous stuff guys all the best for 2024 merry Christmas to you both from Western Australia 🙏🦘🦘🦘🤗😘

Thank you Peter for another wonderful, and entertaining podcast, with the other, of my two favorite basses. I got to learn a few more things about Geoff, and VP.....also about you as well. Thank you Geoff for your conversation and insights. I love your solo works, and Voiceplay as well. VP has become my favorite acapella group. I love all of your arrangements, as well as the theatrics you do in the videos. Both you and VP have come a long way in the past few years. Also, I am old enough to know of The Blenders....It was the Nylons, and them that got me hooked onto Acapella.

Hey, Super fire interview! Just wanted to point out that while "The Exchange" *were* on Season 5, it was actually won by the Vanderbilt Melodores who were just killing it that year (Same lineup that won ICCA though I can't recall which came first).

I don’t often watch interviews, even with people I am a fan of, because it can be a super awkward experience. This was not at all, I highly enjoyed it.

I've been looking forward to this interview since your very first one. I knew it was only a matter of time before you snagged Geoff away from Kathy for an hour. Hopefully now he gives himself credit for being the talented BASS that he is... even if it's Geoff-flavored bass. He's so right about his solo career bringing people to VoicePlay. Although I saw VP back when "Oogie Boogie" blew up massive and all my choir and band mates were jaw-dropped over it, I didn't follow the group. It wasn't until "Over Misty Mountains Cold" trended on YT and I saw he also did "16 Tons" (my grandfather's favorite song since he was a coal miner in the Great Depression) as well as "Blackbird" (one of my all-time favorite songs) that I became obsessed with his voice. Then I saw Geoff also sang with an acapella group, so I checked them out, recognized "Oogie Boogie"... and the rest is history! His videos on singing low inspired me to get back into singing. As a contralto, my voice is... weird. There's not much I can sing at karaoke; Annie Lennox, Cher, and Amy Winehouse start to get old. The combo of having a really AWFUL voice teacher in college and pursuing a career as a trombonist meant that singing just wasn't something I wanted to continue doing. Now at 43 (same age as Geoff, woohoo) my voice keeps sinking deeper. I've hit G2 in morning voice. (Quite proud of that!) I've grown to like my voice rather than be self-conscious that it isn't "feminine." It's still frustrating that when my band does singing, the guys want me to sing the high parts purely because I'm a woman, whereas there are guys in our group with higher voices than me. I'm trying to expand my head voice, though. As for future artists, I hope you can snag an opera singer and geek out over your unique style of singing, or see if you can chat with Layne about his background in EDM, how it sculpts VoicePlay's music, and get some insight on vocal percussion you can use in Bass Gang. Karl Hudson would be a good one, or anyone from Voctave, give them more love. Have Elliott back, I would love to simply listen to his voice for an hour. His voice is like sipping steaming mint tea sweetened with honey whilst wrapped in a warm blanket on a snowy evening.

I suspected this was coming since, a few days ago, you said something that made a little lamp flash in front of my eyes... 🙂 Thank you and Geoff for this interview, it's been such a pleasure to watch. Both of you guys give me the feeling of "good nice persons", I'd dare to say "good guys from an older time", if I may say so. Such a pleasure. ❤ And to see and hear you talk so relaxed and naturally, and INTERACT, making it not a "one-way interview" but a real, true CONVERSATION, made my day. 🙂 I swear I'll watch this again and again, maybe in little pieces, to absorb it more deeply. I really really loved it. 🙂 Thank you again to both. 🙂 See you next time! PS: I'd just ADORE to see a collab with either both of you, or a video "The Bass Gang ft. Geoff Castellucci" (or Voiceplay ft. Peter Barber, why not? Just to see how you'd cope with Layne requests 😁), or even a collaboration of both groups, BG and VP... 🤩🤩

Awesome job, as always. You did an amazing job of drawing out someone who doesn't seem too comfortable talking about himself. By the end, it was just two guys shooting the breeze, which is what a great interview SHOULD be.
