Oh boy! TERRIFIED with this one. Jack's Lament is such a thought-provoking, sad song and Geoff Castellucci's version is chilling. The extent he goes to to create these videos, love it!

@@JenniferGlatzhofer , fantastic reaction and analysis! Here is a Fun Fact about Geoff, appropriate for the Halloween season-- He really loves the stories and poems of the "master of the macabre" Edgar Allan Poe! Geoff has done several readings of Poe's works, including "The Raven," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "Annabelle Lee." Probably not material for reactions of a musical vocal coach, but maybe something to, umm....enjoy(?) on a dark and moonless night! Lol! Have a great day!

This October is the 30th anniversary of _The Nightmare Before Christmas_ BTW. That fact makes me feel old enough. It makes me feel even older when people reacting to this song are too young to remember the original (The Dog's name is Zero, if you didn't know). Speaking of the original, I'm off to watch the clip of "Jack's Lament" from the original now, for comparison's sake.

What I find most enjoyable about Geoff's renditions is how he's so respectful towards the original piece he's covering. I got the impression (and may well be mistaken) that you've never seen Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas". If so, I recommend you watch it. I promise you'll enjoy! Oh btw, congrats on your first subharmonic! It was surprisingly stable!

Also for pointing out the breathier high part early on (and how different it was from further along). The first part is more ‘ghostly’ (and thanks Peter Barber for pointing that out) but to me it is also more wistful. Really showing us Jack’s ennui.

Jen, I always enjoy your reactions to both Geoff and VoicePlay. I would like you to react to a fellow Brit who in my opinion has the most beautiful female voice that I have ever heard. She was in Voice Kids, UK in 2018 when she was 14. She is scheduled to star in Chris Broom's production of the musical Rosie, opening in the West End London in Autumn of 2024. Her name is Lucy Thomas and she is from Wigan, England. She has 60 plus videos on her KZfaq channel, LucyThomasMusic. I would recommend her cover of Evergreen.

While the change in registers has its own musical significance, overlooked is the extent to which this suggests a dissociative personality disorder, or what might be called in other contexts, possession. Adds much to the disturbance of the lament.

As a bass-baritone myself, Geoff is something special. I can get down to an C2, but not the way he can. When he does it it not even a note anymore, it’s like an earthquake. I’m still fairly young, so I can only hope that as my voice matures and I continue to learn how to use my low vocals, that I can one day compare to Geoff.

You can most likely get lower with practice even now and definitely with age. I was able to hit an E2 at 12 before puberty and now can get an occasional G#1 with super low morning voice. Good luck on your journey!
