To learn more about permaculture and the design system, watch Geoff's free Masterclass at www.discoverpermaculture.com
At Zaytuna Farm in Northern NSW, Australia, we have various food forests that come in different sizes and shapes but function just like a regular forest. Our food forests are home to acres of edible species and their supporting plants, with each having a unique size and use. Join Geoff as he explores the forests and discovers the wide variety of edibles such as mango, guava, dragonfruit, bananas, feijoa, Brazilian cherry, root crops, climbers, thousands of coffee plants, tamarillo, bunya pines, and many more. To manage growth, increase biomass, and enhance soil quality, we use pollarding, coppicing, chopping and dropping, mulching, and composting techniques.

About Geoff:
Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer, and teacher that has established demonstration sites that function as education centers in all the world's major climates. Geoff has dedicated his life to spreading permaculture design across the globe and inspiring people to take care of the earth, each other and to return the surplus.
About Permaculture:
Permaculture integrates land, resources, people, and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no-waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.

I'm imagining what would happen if such a place would be found abandoned. Farmers would cut everything and sow grass, and developers would only see greenery to surround luxury homes. It ís hard to appreciate its immense value if you've never learned about plants and trees and never studied nature. Mankind has a long way to go. So thanks again Geoff, for showing us

What a wonderful place!!! I only have a tiny 2x5m back yard all of which is paved - so I've made a container garden - some flowers, evergreens and some veggies. I've built upwards with garden arches, trellis on wooden pallets and couple of obelisks too. I've managed to squeeze in 2 cold frames, 2 water butts and 2 large tubs for making compost all done on the cheap. I'm so proud of my efforts but next year I'm hoping to get a allotment to grow more veggies. Thanks Geoff you're an inspiration to us all :0)

@Geografija5do12

@@TheParadiseParadox I am forcing comfrey to grow outside it's natural habitat, in my backyard with less then ideal growing conditions. I believe this is a major factor when it comes to comfrey spreading. To support this, white clover spreads easily in my heavy clay and nutrient poor soil. Why? Maybe because it is pioneering it on the path of becoming something more productive. I am a "perfect human being" and can't wait 🤣so i decided to use comfrey for mulch and fertilizer production and soil decompaction. At any time I can cover it with a thick layer of cardboard and mulch. If you turn off lights every plant dies. Eventually, you can cut off flowers if you are afraid of seeds. PS sometimes slugs do eat comfrey, even roots

@@Geografija5do12 great, sounds easy to manage. The soil we have is quite thin, and 10cm or so down we each regolith or sandstone, so that is probably going to keep it from taking over

"invasive" plants are all good medicine. Also grow where "native " plants won't. They didn't tell us to mess up the soil ; we set it up that they would have an advantage. Good thing they're better at growing there, or we would have alot more barren earth, topsoil loss (major threat to our life),and dams filling up with silt

We all need to listen to nature more and then get out of our own way. Lessons learned by observation of nature, doing it simply and slow, using diversity etc etc. The principles applied apply to all aspects of life if you implement them as designed. 15 years of student living with nature vs against. Learning from our teacher everyday. Cheers

What u have set up is ideal. The bigger issue when u have common areas and shareholders is how to resolve differences of opinion. If these things are not resolved, no matter how good your farm, the conflicts within, make that farm life miserable. To combat this, it is critical that the people invited to become shareholders be vetted carefully and even then if one marries someone afterwards who is a trouble maker, the problems will begin. This is why I would prefer to own the property outright or work under an owner who does so. Then u only have one to answer to. This is just based on my experiences.

Thanks Mr. Lawton. I grew up kind of near there, in the Hunter Valley. Now I live in Mexico on a ranch and we're planning and taking action, learning more about permaculture and syntropic agroforestry It's very interesting how much overlap there is with species between here and there. We have dragonfruits and guavas, mangos, and a lot of Mexican tree fern of course. We do have a lack of quality soil, so perhaps we could be doing chop and drop on all the ferns we already have. I'm also curious about how you use the cardboard. I have heard that we shouldn't use boxes with paint on them, because the chemicals get into the soil. Perhaps it's not so big a concern as I thought, as I can see you're doing it with no problems

Came here to comment on the cardboard too. I've always been hesitant to use any sort of paper/cardboard if it isn't just plain brown material. If Geoff is ok with using all sorts of cardboard like this then maybe I need to rethink my approach! I have heard it said that the dyes used these days are more vegetable based so not as bad for the soil, but I'm not 100% if this is the case. Maybe the benefits of adding back carbon to the soil/reducing waste outweighs the negative effects of the dyes. 🤷 I live just south of Sydney now, but did live in Coffs Harbour for a while. Man the mid-north coast is like a paradise on earth -- frequent rain followed by bright, warm sunshine. I wasn't into gardening then but it would be a dream to live in such a climate now. Te deseo lo mejor con todo tus proyectos de la permacultura en Mexico, es un país bonito también! :)

@@Wolfmoss1 muchas gracias amigo After doing a bit of research about it, I decided that paint or ink isn't a big issue. The main thing I keep out of the compost is waxed cardboard. @timbushell8640
@timbushell8640 Жыл бұрын
And outside of the vids visual... the main crop rows to more kitchen garden to the disciplined food forest looks to be near 15%, 25% to 60% in area. Is that a near fixed 'best ratio' or is that driven from food choices or even from work input levels? Just curious how and why you make those 'divisions' in land use.
