Such an awesome fish, I have 5 females & a male in a 149gallon tank, they are always so active & such an interesting fish to observe, I currently have a female who is holding eggs, fingers crossed that she doesn't swallow them! Awesome videos

That's cool! My females swallowed them unless I removed her from the tank but once I did they were always successful. Good luck!

Is there a high chance that the female will spit the fry out if I try to catch her? I don't want to risk damaging either her or the fry. Thanks

Hey Jason, love your information, some of the best on KZfaq. Do you know of any resource that compares the goes? I’m still not sure about the sizes and growth rates of the different species. My LFS has tapajos and “red horse Face” but not sure if that’s a surinamensis or not.
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 5 жыл бұрын
I have info on tapajos. They stay relatively smaller - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7mnfpyXzJPIeoE.html I'm not sure about other sources though.

red humps are awesome definitely one of the most rewarding cichlids to keep. i havent seen any good looking ones in video but all of the ones ive kept have been really stunning and have bred great. these are quite aggressive towards eachother though.

i keep them at 68 degrees and even then they are healthy and breeding. It's not often reported, by they are OK in lower temperatures... Females who are holding fry, have 3 vertical black bars on the back part of their body.... I keep 5 females and 1 male together with a group of geophagus brasiliensis in a 350 liter tank without any problem.

another option : after 3 weeks, net the fish, and take the fry out manually by holding the fish, pushing on the gill areas on both sides, with open mounth. Often netting a steindacheri is already enough for seperating the fry. At least, that's my experience.

I currently have one golden severum with 5 filiment barbs in a 40b tank , would I be able to introduce one of these fish into my tank?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics Жыл бұрын
Probably not. Sometimes it works, but they may both want the entire territory as they get larger.

what is the best water temperature for south american fish?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 5 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, that can be a complicated question depending on where they are collected. However, most do well in the 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit range.

Hi jason. How many in a 4 foot 120 woukd you recommend? I also have rummynose and a few black neons. But i have a shot at some of these and very very tempting! Group of 5?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 20 күн бұрын
You could do 4-6, but they would eventually eat the neons and runny nose.

Hey great video sir, i caught these outside mumbai, india maybe they were introduced here but how fast do they grow cause all 7 of them are in a 25 gallon with 3 gaint danios and 1 slender rasbora (all wild caught from kerela,india and about 2 inches) and i need to know how long till they get to about 3 inches as i need to upgrade them to a bigger tank(about 5 are from 1 to 2 cm and other 2 are about 1 inch)
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 4 жыл бұрын
They grow about average for a geophagus, which is to say - fairly slow. That being said - the bigger issue will be when they start breeding, which they do at just 2-3". At that point the males can be rough on one another.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks for the reply but as you said they would require a heater right cause most fishes need the temp to be at the right spot for them to breed and my tank without a heater is always around 22-24 degrees as they are wild caught so they don't need a heater (shed some light on it if you disagree) and i think they will take atleast a year or two to grow to about 3-4 inches, what are your thoughts?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 4 жыл бұрын
Ideally, they do best in the upper 70s F. They will probably get to breeding size in about 8-9 months I wold think.

Hi Jason I'm assuming that mouth breeders fast while they are holding eggs?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 5 жыл бұрын
Great question, for the most part they do. I've seen a few fish take in small pieces of food while holding, but the vast majority of my holding females find a secluded place and mostly stay there.

Hi Jason how long could a fish go without feeding. I can't have large fish but I find them facinating. I hop I'm not waisting your time. I've just added 3 snails and 5 black phantom tetras to my 50 litre and bought a 14 litre tank that I'm about to start cycling for a betta.

Dear Jason, you’ve got me crazy over Geo’s seeing your beautiful types of Geophagus! I’ve wanted Red Head Topajas for long a long time now So I finally gave in and tired eBay all LFS’s could not get and ordered what I thought was a Trio of topajas ... Only to Receive 2 of these guys and what I believe to be a jurupari! The one is definitely a male and I believe he’s been trying breed. Sometimes he’ll follow the others around being Social and next Minute he’s got them all pushed into hiding spots and won’t let them come out, but he also isn’t doing really any damage to them? Any advice
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 4 жыл бұрын
A lot depends on the size of the tank. If you really did get a Jurupari hang on to that one - gonna be really cool! As far as aggression goes, sometimes it will abate, other times one of the tfish has to be removed.

Well I’m back lol... Now most of the Aggression is out on my Jurupari and I think I know why! I believe she is holding!! So Steindachneri and Jurupari mixed babies ? she’s not eating and doesn’t defend herself and keeps getting chased out of her hiding spots!! Is it best to remove her till she’s done with the eggs or get the eggs and put them in a tumbler?
