GEORGE A. ROMERO'S RESIDENT EVIL - WTF Happened to this Unmade Horror Movie
In our new series, The Horror Movie That Almost Was, we take a look at what Zombie Maestro George A. Romero would have done with his own film adaptation of the video game series, "Resident Evil." Would it have lived up to his other zombie films? How would it have held up to the Paul W.S. Anderson version? We do our best to decipher it all and see just how much Romero would have brought to the table and why it didn't end up happening.
Series M.O.: In our new series WTF Happened to this Unmade Horror Movie we take a look at horror films that went deep into development, pre-production or actual production, to then nose dive and crash & burn. What happened? What went wrong? Did we miss out on some hidden gems, or did we dodge messy bullets? Let's find out!

@@bubbytumby8509 the best we got from it was the mansion and the characters. But the story was awful and didn't like the portrayal of characters. The late half of the script was a thrown together mess. It sounds like he was just trying to get it done by having all these things come out at once. It would have been cheesier than Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter live act films.

True - especially when it comes to dialogues. That stuff can be rewritten over and over and changed at the very last minute. Also, not hearing them coming out of an actor's mouth can really impact the way you weight them. "Predator" is full of iconic lines but, if you read the script, those that made the cut sound pretty dull if you, say, just read them aloud and pretend you never saw the movie.

Cool things about Romero's script: 1. Barry is black. 2. The mansion belonged to an eccentric bootlegger during Prohibition, which explains the secret passages etc. 3. Chris gives this whole speech about greed being "the evil that resides in all of us", which is a great explanation for the series' name.
@joshmciver4847

curious why Barry being black is "cool"? the original character is white. Original black characters are awesome. Blade, Luke Cage, etc... but now is the time to INTRODUCE new "characters" of color... not try to change the past or re-write history.

@@joshmciver4847 I just love the "grizzled black cop who's getting too old for this bs" trope. @@dickmisery8587 While I would prefer Barry to be white, honestly I don’t care as long as they treated him better than Resident Evil: Retribution did. Anyway, the reason I’m commenting is about Chris’ speech. That’s a cool line, but it would then change the meaning of the Resident Evil name. The games’ character motivations were always power, not greed, but whatever. It still would have been much better than what we actually got.
@What.99
@What.99 3 жыл бұрын
@@dickmisery8587 Shit. I’m correcting myself. The earlier games were pretty much about greed, then the later games retconned them to be more about power. It’s hard to say, since the 2001 Resident Evil remake explained that Wesker was part of an experiment, meaning power, and they’ve kept that motivation for the rest of the series. But the original first 3 games, were pretty much greed. So it actually would be a fairly good explanation of the name in that respect.

I mean, he did the first MK movie, so he knows how to do a fairly decent video game adaptation. But, with RE, he shit all over the entire franchise just so that his wife/OC could be made in to a fucking superhero, and make all of the actual RE characters pointless and lame. It still actually pisses me off. 😅😂

My unmade resident evil outline: Part 1. Biohazard Part 2. Resident Evil Part 3. Racoon City It all takes place in 98. On a fictional island, Raccoon Island. Off east coast. I imagined a tone similar to the bug scene on Jackson's King Kong and the feel of the indie movie Monsters for Biohazard (part 1). The atmosphere is suppose to always have this unsafe feeling about it. It opens up with tourist on a train riding around island. They have earphones and are listening to history of Island (like boat rides in sf when they're going around islands). We get a brief history on the healing plants found on island (ref to those healing plants on RE) And why that island is chosen for experiments. Train pulls up to another train still on track so he stops it (its going kinda slow anyways, it's for the tours). Gets out, runs to train to see what's up and sees bodies all over the place. Just chunks of flesh ripped off tourist and employee's backs. Then he sees an elephant seal type looking monster slithering, wobbling toward him the way those seals move. Then more emerge from forest. We get to see them rip all the tourist apart on the track/train carts. Pan up. Plane shoots in frame and crash lands on island setting up my trilogy :) Eh?? Eh????? My Bio Hazard and Resident Evil would at some point be happening at the same time so I wrote both outlines in chronological order which was HARD!!!!!!!!! Then 2 goes right into 3. Each movie kinda ends with the new heroes failing which is a downer, but it's implied that the survivors of the story go on to fight umbrella, which would theoretically be the games 4 and 5. But I wrote it to be a trilogy only. I kept all the original characters from Resident Evil Zero, 1 and 2. Read the damn books. Watched the game play on KZfaq. Did research on weather during my dates. I think the Clinton's were getting into crap during that time and I added that, brought the man guy from the resident evil ship game with blonde hair as a cameo. I know I'd get crap for making Raccoon city an island I just don't know how an evil corporation wouldn't see to do this crap on an island where it can be contained. It's like they wanted to world to end. Wtf. No. It's about money. Plants heal people on that island. They create a lab on island. Use wealthy peoples income living on island, in this perfect paradise with no crime. High tech medical facilities. Doctors. Lawyers. The wealthy. They wouldn't notice if one of their constantly traveling rich buddies disappeared from a mysterious attack. Umbrella comes in, hides body, and the government turns a blind eye in the name of progress Sorry. Lol.

Romero's version (the draft we have all read at least) was pretty much unfilmable, to be honest. It featured almost EVERY monster from the game: it would've cost a fortune. Also, EVERY character from RE1 (including the whole Bravo Team, who are just corpses in the game) was in there, along with some from other entries in the series and a couple of additions like Rodriguez, the Vasquez-esque character that looks suspiciously a lot like Rain - more on this later. We're talking about a huge main cast here, with most of the actors having very little to do in most scenes aside from appearing in the background. What I find interesting is that very few pointed out the huge debts the released version has with Romero's script: they both are mainly set in the underground lab, with the mansion playing only a small role (in Romero's script there's a few more scenes...but that's also true for Anderson's script which can be found online). In both cases we see a task force entering the mansion and the leader using some high-tech gizmo to access the secret passage to the lab. Both feature a tough Latin woman clearly inspired by Vasquez from "Aliens" (that was nowhere to be found in the game). But, most interestingly, the famous laser scene from Anderson's movie is a mix of two scenes from Romero's script: in one, the corridor leading to the lab's core turns into a sort of huge meat-grinder. In another, the STARS team faces a set of smart squirtguns (!!) that shoot acid on whatever crosses their laser sights...which eventually form a net pattern.

I guess Romero would think on some way to bring his vision of the game to big screen, independent of how much it would cost. His Living Dead trilogy (at the time) were made in a really tight budget yet he made an excellent job on all of them because he counted with a really competent team. So it would not be that impossible to make a movie with budget limitations (anyone can make a movie nowadays through the cellphone and no need to spend a shitload of money, and even Full Moon can be creative with a very low budget sometimes), you just need to be creative enough to know how to do it.

I never heard of this and, no offense, I find it quite unlikely: Rob Zombie's only movie before the release of Anderson's "Resident Evil" was "House of 1000 Corpses", which was shot in 2000 but only got released in 2003 after he managed to buy the movie back from Universal. That's hardly the resume for helming the expensive (Anderson always downplayed it, but it did cost more than 30 million dollars) adaptation of a best-selling IP.

ANYTHING would of been better than the complete fucking travesty that is the current movies! Anderson is a complete joke of a director. He made Mortal Kombat which was good mainly due to its sauce material and its score, then he abandoned the franchise and let it die. He then made Event Horizon, whilst a good movie it should of been better, and he let the studios lose the original footage!!!??? How does a director do this? It's your movie, its your vision and you don't ask where or how the original print is being stored?? Just shows how much he really cares. Now we will never get a directors cut of the movie. And then he made RE, which was a complete slap in the face to RE fans. All this movie series does is let Anderson show off his hot wife in skin tight leather in slow motion. The series is a waste of money, a waste of time, a waste of plastic, and a waste of film. Delete it from existence.
