In this week's episode, things are a little bit different. Not only are we spotlighting one of the most famous directors of all time, we're also looking at a movie that KIND OF already was made. Ever heard of E.T.? Or Poltergeist? Or Gremlins? Well we would have none of those if it weren't for Steven Spielberg's "Night Skies."

SERIES SYNOPSIS: "WTF Happened to this Unmade Horror Movie" takes a look at the various horror projects that could never seem to get things off the ground, be it for budgetary concerns, creative differences, or just an ever evolving Hollywood landscape. We dive into every aspect and see just how close these films had come to cameras rolling.

Amazing how perhaps the world wasn’t ready for Night Skies back in Spielberg’s heyday, but his Amblin aesthetic influenced so many horror filmmakers. He made ET & produced Gremlins so other filmmakers could make stuff today that resembles Night Skies.

So, remember E.T.'s cousins? The ones who abandoned him on Earth? This was what they did before the events. And even though I meant that as a joke, now that I think about it, I guess Night Skies actually WAS a prequel to E.T. They just sent 'Buddy' (E.T.) somewhere away from that family being terrorized into the hands of a boy named Elliott. Speaking of E.T., who else thinks Spielberg wrote "Nocturnal Fears" (the would-be horror sequel to the film) just to scare studio executives away?

Having recently read Rick Baker's book METAMORPHOSIS Vols. 1&2, Baker's problem wasn't so much for the change from a horror alien film to an alien "family film", but the fact that he was expected contractually to immediately start conceptual work on a brand-new film in less than four months (which to him was ridiculous). Spielberg furthermore got ticked off Baker wasn't on board to work on E.T., and because Baker was working simultaneously on both effects for NIGHT SKIES and AMERICAN WEREWOLF (each production sharing stage/workshop space), Baker not only dumped all the NIGHT SKIES work, but had to rapidly exit the warehouse with all the AMERICAN WEREWOLF effects before that work had the potiental to be dumped as well (even though in those days, Spielberg and John Landis were still friends). Years later, director William Dear wanted Baker to make his Bigfoot for HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS, but Baker was reluctant because it was an Amblin production, so he took a meeting with Spielberg to clear the air, but found Spielberg was agreed with Dear that Baker was the perfect guy for the job. When Baker asked why Spielberg had been so agitated before, Spielberg just answered, "Look, we were both young and we had different ideas. Water under the bridge." Baker and Spielberg ended any bad will, and Baker would continue to work with Spielberg for the MEN IN BLACK series.

My gut tells me that if he had gone with Night Skies instead of E.T., the Speilberg name probably would not be as big as it turned out to be. It's upsetting that another director didn't take it up. Seems like this would have been a super creepy piece of horror 80s schlock. No sense in doing it today. Just wouldn't have the same vibe and be loaded with crappy CGI.

I was ok with E.T. Gremlins I thought was supposed to be scary. It was pure campy 80s cheese. But I was like 13 then. I'm still looking for that "Alien" movie that features Greys or similar REAL reported sightings. I want that creepy vibe, what do they want? Where do they come from? Who are "They"? Almost kinda documentary movie.
@williamseneyjr.6277
@williamseneyjr.6277 3 жыл бұрын
@@BlackAdder1970 As I understand it, the original Gremlins script leaned much more into the horror genre than comedy. I remember Billy's mother was originally supposed to have her severed head rolled down the stairs to Billy's feet for instance. I believe some of that was retained in the novelization for Gremlins. After learning about Dark Skies, I would very much like to visit the alternate reality that saw it get made over E.T. haha.

This is a really good video, well-edited and presented. One little snippet of info I have on Night Skies which I came across in the early to mid-Eighties, probably in the pages of Cinefantastique or Cinefex, is that Rick Baker originally intended the alien creatures to be puppeteered, using an (at the time) unusual technique called a waldo (named for the Robert Heinlein short story of the same name). The puppeteer would wear a complicated harness which would scale-down their input movements and via rods and cables, reproduce the output movements to articulate the alien figures (which were smaller than human height). This would give the film-maker the freedom to have the aliens move fairly freely in any scene, so long as the puppeteer and the connecting rods were hidden out of frame. There may have been other methods employed to give verisimilitude to the expressions or hand movements, but I always wondered what that might have looked like on-screen. I think animatronics like the ones used by Stan Winston in A.I. for Teddy may have superseded the technique. Does anyone out there know any more?

It's like Jodorowsky's Dune. Because of how influential the unmade film was, I feel kind of like I have already seen it. But I wonder, could someone take that original script and attempt to film it one day. Sure it will feel derivative, but perhaps with some tweaks it could be done right.

this video underplays the power house that is Ron Cobb. His work on single frame comics from the mid 60's into the early 70's is amazing. Poignant social commentary that emotes and is prescient. He was all over the hippy underground press and then suddenly his art was the foundation for many of the best Hollywood films. (Star Wars, Alien, Last Star Fighter etc) I believe there's an interview where he relates how NOT directing Night Skies he was able to take home a bunch of money because of the contract he was under. I was a movie-going pre-teen when E.T. came out. I seen it plenty of times. As I grew..or rather as Steve Spielberg grew his movies got farther and farther from interesting me. I think his peak was this mid-80's work where he's producing and assisting other directors as in Goonies, Poltergeist, Gremlins. What if he just stopped there? Just as if The Ramones had gotten in a plane wreck after recording Rocket to Russia.....as a friend once observed

Your statements from 9:56 on are kind of misleading because Tobe Hooper was the one pitching the concept of Poltergeister to Spielberg. Hooper had a life long interest in ghosts and the paranormal and was the one that gave Spielberg the idea to completely rewrite his home invasion movie (now with ghosts attacking the family instead of aliens) so that Hooper would feel comfortable with the material and would agree to direct it. Whereas your statements almost make it look like Hooper was just some gun for hire on this project.

I don't believe it is unmade (some do) but if you can dig up anything on _Black the Ripper_ ... I know there really isn't much to be had. On the flipside, two films many _do_ believe exist but I think are unmade are 1974's _Chilling_ and 1985's _Dead End_ . Info is scarce on the former, not so much the latter. Whether or not said info is _true_ is debated.

If the script is available, someone should option it. Spielberg had no problem pretending that Tobe Hooper directed “Poltergeist;” someone should make “Night Skies” and pretend Spielberg directed it.

No pretending needed. Spielberg and the studio actually had a concerted problem *not* pretending that Hooper directed the film, hardly mentioning him while Spielberg fielded all the press interviews, which caused a major lawsuit in Hollywood. Anyway, all actors seem to believe Hooper directed them, or seem to remember him always on set, Spielberg must be very persuasive.

Rick baker made the right decision not doing ET - it was a sappy mainstream drama regardless of the success it amounted - a horror sequel to Close Encounters would have been far more interesting than that illogical stupid ET head on a ropey neck thingy ....

Look I don't care I don't like ET that is most boring movie I've ever watched so too freaking Kitty I would have rather had the night skies that sound a badass and I would have watched it as a kid

He's not a master at comedy. "1941" and "The Terminal" suck.
