The Mariinsky Ballet is one of the world’s greatest ballet company with an astonishing heritage. Before emigrating to the West, George Balanchine studied in St Petersburg and was a member of the Mariinsky. However, Jewels dates from late in his career, and was premiered in New York. Although it did not receive its first performance at the Mariinsky until 1999, it has since become a core part of the company’s repertoire . This performance was filmed at the Mariinsky Theatre and features many of the most well-known dancers including Ulyana Lopatkina, Igor Zelensky and Andrian Fadeyev alongside conductor Tugan Sokhiev.

Refreshing and relaxing to watch, like corals and seaweed, waving gently in the green underwater light! I like the way the emphasis is on grace and expressiveness, rather than acrobatics. There is a richness and graciousness about the rounded, organic movements, that is in keeping with the luxurious quality of the precious jewels. The men’s costumes are nice, with those be-jewelled peplums demurely covering the tush!

Beautiful - so romantic and poetic! Also those costumes are the most beautiful in the whole of classical ballet in my opinion. I just love the colour and sparkliness - also the romantic midi length tulle skirts. 💚💚🧚‍♀️💚💚

I was wondering the same thing. I was a huge fan of Zhanna Ayupova’s during the early 90s, hers was the generation after Altynai Asylmuratova. The timing of her Violette Verdy solo is atrocious, distorting the background, and flattening everything she does.

Congratulations!

I am delighted to note here that this scenario, based on music from Faure's Pelleas et Melisande and Shylock, is presented as Balanchine originally presented it, ending with the Final from Shylock which in my opinion gloriously sums the whole thins up. He spoiled this later on by adding on the movement Mort de Melisande, which has changed the perspective of it, at least for me, not in a favorable way, in my own opinion. Whatever is prowess was in creating some amazing choreographic presentations, his reputation as a musician unfortunately was not fully deserved, as his sense of all-important musical structure and continuity was not strong - one blatant example of this I have always pointed out is that using Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings. But as I just said, I am totally delighted that the Mariinsky Company has used here the original unspoiled version of it. I know many will disagree, and if so, I will always welcome a calm, intelligent debate on these issues.

Just saw Jewels in NYC with three different companies, including the Bolshoi, NYCB and Paris Opera Ballet. The Bolshoi dancers are superior in every way -- technically, artistically, athletically, etc. -- there absolutely is no comparison. Another level of art completely. The Paris Ballet was quite good and subtle. The NYCB at least kept some of Stravinsky's great wit and irony alive but were not impressive in any other way. The Bolshoi was sent by the gods and, of course, New York City critics don't get them. American critics know nothing of art and passion, preferring "new interpretations" to perfection... Critics/hipsters/the L.C.D. principle of people mired in pop culture...

@edcrfv098765
@edcrfv098765 6 жыл бұрын
I undestand your point, the bolshoi definitelly strive for perfection and that's something that can really be admired, but I don't think there's anything wrong with new interpretations being the preference in american ballet companies. I personally enjoy both kinds of aproaches to ballet for what they are, and don't think one is objectively better, it really depends on your personal preference in my opinion.
