The Mariinsky Ballet is one of the world’s greatest ballet company with an astonishing heritage. Before emigrating to the West, George Balanchine studied in St Petersburg and was a member of the Mariinsky. However, Jewels dates from late in his career, and was premiered in New York. Although it did not receive its first performance at the Mariinsky until 1999, it has since become a core part of the company’s repertoire . This performance was filmed at the Mariinsky Theatre and features many of the most well-known dancers including Ulyana Lopatkina, Igor Zelensky and Andrian Fadeyev alongside conductor Tugan Sokhiev.

Watching this in Australia , as I couldn’t get to the performance here. Truly stunning, really enjoyed that performance. The main dancers were particularly expressive and really looked like they enjoyed it and put their heart and soul into it. Well done👏👏👏👏💗

The composer Alexi Machavariani (from the old noble Georgian family) was the Georgian composer, who was born and died in Georgia (Republic of). He was often invited to the Russian Opera, the Russian Soviet Music events and on. One of his famous ballet compositions was Otello and it was perfomanced in in Bolshoi Theater in times of USSR. It was a masterpiece and also the ballet dancer who performed Otello, was a legendary Georgian ballet dancer Vakhtang Chabukiani (you can click in You-tube his name and will enjoy of his incomparable Otello in the ballet world). The dancer created such a great speed of otello that neither Russian Soviet nor European dancers could run over this master class performance. So after his death none could take the step in such dance speed, and because of it Otello, composed by the great Georgian composer Alexi MACHAVARIANI is not is on ballet list anymore. Anotheryoung great Georgian ballet dancer Nika(Nikolai) Tsiskaridze which also was invited to dance in Moscow Bolshoi Theater, approached to this Otello, but in some circumstances it didn’t work… Also George Balanchine, the well-known Master and Choreographer of AMERICAN BALLET was the Georgian origin too, from the old Georgian noble family) who immigrated to US after Russian revolution. He had very warm relations with Stravinsky, composer of Fire Bird and Petrushka, which Balanchine created for the American ballet. He was the son of famous Georgian composer Meliton Balanchivadze and brother of famous composer Andrea Balanchivadze, who was on very friendly terms with Shostakovich.. There is another Georgian great ballet dancer who performed in Bolshoi Theater, Nika (Nikolai) Tsiskaridze too.

and before USSR Gergia was part of Russian impire. These 2 cultures are integrated into each other already centuries and these are Russian who set up there academical culture , schools etc. In ALL former Soviet republics roots of classical and academical studing are Russians and as u know without a school you are nobody. You somehow forgot to mention that Balanchine's mother was Russian-Maria Nikolaevna Vasilyeva. And when asked who he was by nationality, he replied: "I am Georgian by blood, Russian by culture, and a Petersburger by nationality", "I was lucky, I was born in the same Petersburg that Tchaikovsky walked in.»

Calle 1959 I also saw the rehearsals at ROH on KZfaq, and it seems they were more entertaining, yes. Maybe because I love their principals. But the style is all different. You can't take away all that Vaganova running through your veins. Vaganova style remains the most royal and elegant to me, but in staging Balanchine, ROH have an advantage because they have dancers from all over the world, from different schools, and a more diverse repertoire.

Simona, current Vaganova's rector Nikolai Tsiskaridze also danced it but with more "hutzpa" and playfulness, he was amazing dancer before he became Vaganoiva's rector and was a Bolshoi star for 21 years. See his version, it's more charismatic (also from Mariinsky with Nioradze) and tell me what you think. .kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l5abopWS2ODHcaM.html
