In Scotland, a random guy waited two years to see if he was going to be arrested or fined because he made a joke by having his girlfriend's pug do a particular kind of salute. It went viral and despite no one making a complaint, the police charged and arrested him. I cant recall if it was the prosecution or the judge but one of them said "Context doesn't matter," when he told them it was joke to annoy his girlfriend.

thanks for bringing us this guy. i had never heard of him, but I'm getting strong George Carlin vibes and I'm most happy. He's obviously very intelligent and brings legit comedy to sharp observation and biting critique... very much George Carlin attributes. I am an immediate fan. And Jordan Peterson's rise to fame is based on laws (at the very least, proposed...) regarding not offending people. he flat out refused, regardless of consequence, to allow himself to be forced to use prescribed pronouns. those are definitely laws aimed at protecting certain individuals from offense (ironically while not giving a damn if others are offended by such laws).

Stephen Fry has a number of quotes regarding people taking offense. He's quite the articulate speaker, and used to do sketch comedy with Hugh Laurie, including the Black Adder series on the BBC.

Everyone is "offended" now be cause we've enabled everyone to think that their emotions matter to the rest of us, which is simply not the case. And yes, social media engenders this by giving everyone a "platform" on which they can broadcast childish tantrums about anything they wish, be it truly offensive or not. I think it's because some people just want to be seen as a victim in order to elicit pity and attention from others.

There are new laws in the UK that cover offense. As my father always said, "offense is never given, only taken"

in the uk they do have laws on offensive speech in person and on the internet. completely subjective and up to the judge you get. its the same law they charged count dankula with for his pug video. there was a teenage girl that posted the lyrics of her dead friends favorite song on a Facebook memorial and was imprisoned because they were rap lyrics and contained the n word. most recently a guy was imprisoned because a meme he posted "caused someone anxiety". and the encounter was caught on camera so you can actually watch a cop tell a man he was arrested for causing anxiety.

I love this guy he reminds me a little bit of Carlin with his topics but mixed with Russel Brand and the way he does his rants

There is a law in Britain against causing offense. It's pretty disgusting.

Her: "I don't think it's illegal to be offensive" Me after having the cops called on me for verbal assault because I told a woman I didn't find her attractive: "Yeah, thank god"

I basically grew up in an environment where "offensive" things happened frequently, so we got desensitized to it pretty quickly. Adding to that, my Granny, who definitely experienced real adversity that nothing I've dealt with so far can compare to, taught me the age old "sticks and stones" saying. If someone whose faced hard "r" racism can tell me that, why should I give any attempts at being "offensive" any mind? Not saying it doesn't still happen, but I recognize that it's personal and, like all my issues, the common denominator is me. It's not and never will be anyone else's problem. I also don't let people get to me if they aren't close, and as such I give everyone the benefit of the doubt, initially. Most people aren't really trying to offend, I believe. It's unfortunate if they are, but if anything I feel sad for people who feel the need to bring others down. I think it just reflects a hurt within themselves, and having been there before it's hard to be upset. Not just the weather that dictates a beautiful day, and not everyone's having one.

This dude has one of the best skits I’ve ever heard regarding gay men and perceived masculinity and I highly recommend everyone to watch it! If you search it it should be called “Steve Hughes on Gays” don’t let the title put you off the joke is written and delivered to perfection.

I just want to start by saying that I have found your channel and with it a breath of fresh air. Your commentary has value and substance. You speak to your viewers with the understanding that they are of some intelligence. I dont find that very often. It shows brightly that you have a love of history and an isatiable need for knowledge of all kinds. I am the same EXACT way. I cannot wait to enjoy more of your videos. You are seen and appreciated. And to thank you for the hours of work you put into this channel, Im going to honor your request at the end by giving my opinion: That is why George Carlin is my favorite of all time. A philosopher and social commentator in the guise of comedy. Comedy has been the last bastion of free speech for many years. Dave Chapelle, Ricky Gervaise, Bill Burr, Bo Burnham are living examples. Satire is the best (and at times only) tool to challenge the establishment and societal norms by pointing out its at times rediculous nature. Voltair in the 1770's, the French philospher who is one of most celebrated in history, was a comedy writer. He has to run around Europe under the constant threat of being killed off by severeal monarchies because of the (and pardon my French xD) shit he stirred up. It has been an engine for progression. Comedians are the only socially acceptable form of massly consumed media that is free to say what others cannot. So some use that ability and the means of its celebrity as a podium for change. I believe comedy must be protected and always given carte blanche as a part of some sort of social checks and balances. But thats just one mans opinion. I would love to hear your opinon on this. There is no better way to learn to me. I actually love being wrong. If I am wrong, that simply means I JUST learned something that is right. And thusly, wont be wrong on the matter ever again.

I actually was lent the book you recommended (the subtle art of not giving a fck) a couple of years ago from a (still) close friend. I initially said to him that i started reading books in english because i wanted to improve my english language skills (I'm dutch), and then he gave it to me. It was definitally a fun read, but i only now realise that i never returned the book and it is still on my bookshelf, so he might be thankfull for you reminding me that i still have it. It is a good recommendation though. Love this channel for (because of) your huge smile and witty and thoughtfull commentary, it is lifting me up.

I haven't seen this in years good call. I make fun of myself all the time I have no idea how the paradigm changed where it's almost like you're looking to be a victim. - And well said yes it's incredibly arbitrary which makes it almost null and void in every way shape or form how can one possible calculate whether or not it's worthy of persecution in the public square?

In Germany, they have a law that covers defamation but extends into insults. My inderstanding is: To publicy insult somebody can be punishable by prison or a fine. "Publicly" can mean on social media or in a place with witnesses and flipping the middle finger in a road rage incident counts. The test is not whether the person was offended, but whether their personal honor was damaged in some way.

Just found this channel! Love how you don’t waffle a intro and get right into it. And in the UK they recently changed the law so they can arrest people for being offensive but the police only act when its offending certain groups. You can be super offensive to a middle aged straight white man but if you upset say the alphabet people they will come after you. Kinda crazy

In canada there are laws on offensive speech that are basically additions/extensions to misgender laws and although not always enforced there ARE some cases where people have had to pay a fine or ended up serving a week to month sentence under the umbrella of offensive speech......it's actually one of the most nonsensical things I have seen in law

reminded me of a time when I was in a bar, just speaking my mind to the bartender(as you do ; ). I mentioned how glad I was that I wasn't religious, because there are so many less reasons to be offended.. Literally, the only other guy sitting at the bar got visibly angry and threw me a death stare.. Case in point, had to stifle a laugh ; ).

Absolutely good points here. I often struggled to wonder why people let words bother them. Growing up in UK, I was called names, One famous one by another kid, "Monkey / Go back to Africa" and you know my very first response was to laugh, i genuinely thought this puffed up angry kid, for which had no reason, was talking to something else or maybe not seeing clearly, I laugh, i found it amusing he would think me an animal out of the blue. Though I know I am not, so I took no offence, infact I pitted him, and later me and that person became friends lol. Which I learned he was trying to make me feel angry to no avail. I get it, things offends or annoy us all, we all are not perfectly immune. However these days people be getting offended or really hyped over things so little, when bigger much more important things taking place. Cant help but wonder, if this is just another grooming for distraction, conformity, and control. Like your channel sis, like your style, i subscribed after seeing your 2nd video and you saying " no intro, straight to the point" that is unique to you ^^ well played.

Subbed just for the "no long intro" so refreshing to not hear all the pointless crap before a reaction so kudos. In the UK it is illegal to cause offense and now apparently to "cause anxiety". But of course this is just a tool to silence dissidence of the radical left. But there's avenues for that in other countries too, like you said "hate crime" this is a nebulous term that doesn't really mean anything. It can quite easily be interpreted to mean literally anything.

I use to almost try and use language in a way that it can be taken different ways just to find out if they are easily offended or see things in the negative or if they have a humor or see things in a positive manner. You can guess which people I choose not to hang around with.

There's a law the UK about online bullying, where if someone deems you to be offensive or threatening to them online they can report you and you can potentially serve two years in jail.. As far as I know no one has been convicted of this yet. but time will tell.... Also "the subtle art of not giving a fuck" is the first book I read (I'm not a big reader) and it was brilliant!!

Last year 3300 people were arrested - ARRESTED - here in the UK for being offensive on line. In Russia only 400! Hmmmm - one person in the U.K. was arrested for posting song lyrics for a friend who passed away! She posted their favorite song - it was a rap song - she was ARRESTED and found guilty. As far as "I don't think it's illegal to be offensive" not yet in the states, but it's getting there... also, in Canada, a comedian was arrested while on stage for a joke, in the UK a veteran was arrested for quote: "causing anxiety due to an offensive Facebook post." Another comedian in the UK was almost arrested for a joke, but was let go thankfully, just to name a few examples.. so it is a very real occurrence in our time.

FYI... there is a law in the UK that makes being offensive illegal.

In the UK, I believe its under section 127 of the communications act, theres a law which makes it a crime to be grossly offensive online. Thousands are charged to some degree every year. Also, We have some thing called a "NON CRIME INCIDENT" were basically even though you haven't committed a crime, its close enough or we don't like it so it goes on your record and may prevent you from getting a job or holding certain positions in the future, and you won't know about it unless you formally ask if you have one against your name.

Mildly interesting aside on 'what is offensive/laws etc' -- Most people know we Australians don't have as much taboo around the 'C-bomb', and it's common for people from all walks of life to use it. The interesting part is that this particular word was the subject of a Federal Court case, determining if it's use was offensive or not. The court determined that it's use is fair, and legal. That HOW it is used (and it's framing/purpose/delivery) is the determining factor in if it is indeed 'offensive' under any laws etc, but that word itself is not, in and of itself, offensive.

Hey! Im from Sweden, and I had to look this up, and I got a bit surprised. First off, there has to be with intent....There is a law called "incitement against ethnic group" (which is not to be confused with freedom of speech) ... you cant, for example, say the n-word to someone with the intent of offending them (duh). But what I didnt know is that you actually can be convicted for "Offending" too. It sound a bit weird and Ive never heard of that being applied. I dont think its common. But it's also worth mentioning that we seem to have a very different climate here in Europe. We cant go around suing everyone like in USA. We got handles on our grocery-bags, and if the handle breaks, you got yourself to blame xD
