Former President Trump continues to ricochet between the courthouse and the campaign trail. This morning, he was back to face a trial for his statements about former columnist E. Jean Carroll's sexual assault allegations in 2019. Meanwhile, just ahead of the New Hampshire primary he got a boost from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who decided to drop out of the race and back Trump. Conservative lawyer George Conway joins Michel Martin with incisive analysis of Trump's legal woes and how they are shaping his campaign.

One characteristic of MAGAs on social media is that they never express an original thought. Every argument they advance is someone else's. And almost invariably, they express themselves in memes. They also love chain emails disseminating complete bullshit - the more lurid, the better. Left to their own devices, these stupid people would be irritating. But seduced by a charismatic leader, they coalesce into a destabilizing force eager to promote the cult. And avid to be tools of the autocrat. “He is under a spell, blinded, misused, and abused in his very being. Having thus become a mindless tool, the stupid person will also be capable of any evil and at the same time incapable of seeing that it is evil. This is where the danger of diabolical misuse lurks, for it is this that can once and for all destroy human beings. The autocrat is aware of this valuable and necessary asset. “Upon closer observation, it becomes apparent that every strong upsurge of power in the public sphere, be it of a political or of a religious nature, infects a large part of humankind with stupidity.” Bonhoeffer then offered the cold comfort that, while there is an end to stupidity, it comes at a high cost. And unfortunately, there is no other way to achieve that end. “Yet at this very point it becomes quite clear that only an act of liberation, not instruction, can overcome stupidity. Here we must come to terms with the fact that in most cases a genuine internal liberation becomes possible only when external liberation has preceded it. Until then we must abandon all attempts to convince the stupid person.” In Germany’s case the “act of liberation” was the country's destruction as it lost WWII. Who knows what will cause the MAGAs to come to their senses? With luck, an energized Gen Z will push an aging reactionary mob to the sidelines. With no luck, it will be the civil war Trump and his dead-enders are fomenting. Or the end could be decades away as the Republicans at the state and federal levels shred democratic norms like ballot access, streamlined registration, early and mail-in voting, ballot measures, and representative districts while armed Brown Shirts patrol polling stations - reducing America to a Soviet-style shithole. On the last, although I like to be right, I would prefer circumstances to prove me guilty of hyperbole and just plain wrong. Fingers crossed.

You can tell them these facts: Trump won't even break 200 electoral college votes. You need 270 to be elected. Two criminal trials coming in the next few months, the hush money wire fraud crime of NY with democrat jurors,in March,Trump has ZERO defense and will already be found guilty of that crime even before the big crime of DC insurrection in June. Tell them this: 5 months before election day, he'll be a twice convicted felon going into the voting booths. 95% of all independent and swing voters, who trump desperately needs to be re elected, will run for their lives after he's convicted.. Civil trials don't find people guilty. You are either the winner or the loser. And the loser pays money to the winner. There is no crime in a civil case. There is no guilt. It's just about money for damages and defamation etc.

There are things Trump did that he hasn’t been indicted for like his callous treatment of children at the border, his blundered handling of the pandemic with hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths, even his 13 execution of federal prisoners, all these things are reprehensible. It was (and is still) amazing to me that there are so many Americans who feel they are not well off (in one of the richest countries in the world?), threatened by Communists around every corner, and generally fear the future. People seem to need to be told what to do and believe yet pretend they are independent and free-thinkers. Victim psychology and vindictiveness are rampant and take precedence over policies, ethics, or honesty.
