i love this song, i think its a great 'look at me now' sort of song. I personally feel that what he is saying through the lyrics is that people thought the idea of him playing the uke was a joke until they actually heard him and then were gobsmacked by his amazing talent which has never been matched. At least that's what I hear when I listen to this song despite the fact that the lyrics are saying something completely different.

The title of this song sounds like a notorious American magazine ad that was printed for several decades, starting in the 1920s: "They Laughed When I Sat Down At The Piano - But When I Started To Play..." It was for a company that sold mail-order music lessons. It sounds like this same ad, or a similar one, must've been printed in Britain too.
