George Formby a legend in England in the 30's and 40's. Made loads of films and kept us smiling during the dark days of WW2. George Harrison of "The Beatles" was a huge fan of his, and was a member of his fan club. He actually attended the annual meetings in Blackpool and took his uke with him.

A young Charlie Chaplin used to borrow costumes from George's father, a music hall performer called George Formby snr. Included was a bowler hat and cane. He'd use them for the character "John Willie", "the archetypal gormless Lancashire lad in baggy trousers, tight jacket, and bowler hat, slow-talking, hen-pecked, accident-prone, but muddling through." This character became the inspiration for Charlie Chaplin in the formation of his character the Tramp.

"When I'm Cleaning Windows" is a comedy song performed by Lancastrian comic, actor and ukulele player George Formby. It first appeared in the 1936 film Keep Your Seats, Please. The song was credited as written by Formby, Harry Gifford and Frederick E. Cliffe. Formby performed the song in A♭ in Keep Your Seats, Please. For the single release, the key was changed to B♭. The song was so successful that George Formby recorded another version of the song entitled "The Window Cleaner (No. 2)". This song uses similar orchestration to the original version and it is about further things which were seen on a window cleaning round. Because the song's lyrics were racy for the time, it was banned by the BBC from being played on the radio. The corporation's director general John Reith stated that "if the public wants to listen to Formby singing his disgusting little ditty, they'll have to be content to hear it in the cinemas, not over the nation's airwaves"; Formby and his wife and manager Beryl Ingham were furious with the block on the song. In May 1941, Ingham informed the BBC that the song was a favourite of the royal family, particularly Queen Mary, while a statement by Formby pointed out that "I sang it before the King and Queen at the Royal Variety Performance". The BBC relented and started to broadcast the song. The record's sales were so successful that Regal Zonophone awarded Formby the first silver disc for sales of over 100,000 copies."

I didn't use 7 that much but I never liked the UI, especially the circular start button. So I'd say XP, 7, and 10 are tied with benefits and drawbacks to each one, and any other windows isn't worth considering.

Can I meet yer Auntie Nora, please? ; } As my deceased father (born 1928, and raised with the American version of this humour!) used to say all the time: "They don't make 'em like they used to!" I'm sure George Formby would have agreed with that statement! ; P

Just know, his guide is incorrect to the chords used here. I reccommend learning from a different source for George Formby songs. TUT may be good, but he's not quite as good as those who've practiced the George Formby Style.

Beryle and George Formby were well known by people in the war years. As a boy during the 1940's, I sw many films in the local cinema of George and his singing.

Lyrics I go cleanin' windows to earn an honest bob For a nosy parker it's an interestin' job Now it's a job that just suits me A window cleaner you would be If you can see what I can see When I'm cleanin' windows Honeymoonin' couples too You should see them bill 'n coo You'd be surprised at things they do When I'm cleanin' windows In my profession I'll work hard But I'll never stop I'll climb this blinkin' ladder Till I get right to the top The blushin' bride, she looks divine The bridegroom he is doin' fine I'd rather have his job than mine When I'm cleanin' windows The chambermaids' sweet names I call It's a wonder I don't fall My mind's not on my work at all When I'm cleanin' windows I know a fella, such a swell He has a thirst, that's plain to tell I've seen him drink his bath as well When I'm cleanin' windows Oh, in my profession I'll work hard But I'll never stop I'll climb this blinkin' ladder Till I get right to the top Pyjamas lyin' side by side Ladies nighties I have spied I've often seen what goes inside When I'm cleanin' windows ------ -Ukulele----- Now there's a famous talkie queen She looks a flapper on the screen She's more like eightie than eighteen When I'm cleanin' windows She pulls her hair all down behind Then pulls down her... never mind And after that pulls down the blind When I'm cleanin' windows In my profession I'll work hard But I'll never stop I'll climb this blinkin' ladder Till I get right to the top An old maid walks around the floor She's so fed up, one day I'm sure She'll drag me in and lock the door When I'm cleanin' windows When I'm cleanin' windows

The Queen Mum - a jovial and kind woman whom I had the sincere privilege to see in her canary yellow outfit exiting (NOT Brexiting) St Paul's Cathedral in about 1998 - ADORED this song! She had a very healthy sense of sexual innuendo - as do all educated British people who enjoy a bit of fun! Shine on, you crazy diamonds! ; }

+Rebecca Rose Hirschfield I used "still" as a reminder for you to realise that regardless of time and distance... You'll always remain in my mind as the mysterious yet captivating woman I met through Todd Rundgren and whose perfect english melts my heart. As for the song, for a 20 yrs old like me it is rather odd-sounding but I have the sensitivity to appreciate its artistic value, the woman is sensual and elegant (if I may say) :P
