Most interviewers want to talk. The key to a great interview is to ask a good question and then let the expert talk. You did a really good job.

George Gardner has always been a straight up guy willing to help in any way he can. He is a credit to the industry. I owned his guns when he was just a guy building rifles long before GAP became so popular and they were excellent then.

He was very congenial, friendly and more than happy to spend all that time with us to address these questions. I was very impressed with him. Thanks for the compliment. I am currently uploading another interview with some of the same questions but with John Krieger of Krieger barrels. His philosophy is much more old school and differs from George on key topics. Rather interesting.

I shoot the same calibers George does, except I shoot the 6.5 PRC instead of the SAUM. That's makes me feel like I know a little about what's going on. Thanks for the video, enjoyed it!

This is a great video and George Gardner is not only an expert in barrel fabrication and action design but a good shooter too. I wonder how good the best cold hammer forged barrels are in terms of lack of tooling marks and durability at the throat.

Had one of those silencer baffles after 1500 rds of not taking off the brake to clean it. I honestly thought it was a metal wall that had been eroded 😄. Too bad I didn't see this video a year ago. Great info!

Man, these are the vids I want to see from shot The guns and bags and all that jazz will turn up, but these vids are informative. My question is, can you clean between your first and second shot when bore sighting? I thought the rifle was supposed to stay stationary.

On bbl break in & keeping your bores CLEAN Ive heard 3 OLD master gunsmiths say almost exactly the same things. THIS guy is SHARP! Wish I could afford his work.....

He talks about Cut and Button rifling leaving rough spots but doesn't touch on forged barrels, which by the very way they are made, don't have these rough tooling marks? Are they, therefore the better option to look for when buying?

CHF barrels are great for hunting and reasonable distances. Benchrest and long range, they're very unlikely to shoot with a button or cut rifled.

3 lug has better bolt lift. instead of 90 degree lift you get between 50-60 degree lift I think. it helps with quick shots for matches.

viking9934 3 lugs allow you to achieve the same amount of. Intact area and thus strength while reduce bolt throw required to operate the action to 60 or so degrees rather than 90 making it less work and much quicker to cycle the bolt

Why not .260 remington? Why is everyone hung up on 6.5 creedmoor? Not a smart a$$ question, just wondering.

260 brass is more difficult to come by, the case is longer in the 260 and should not as flat making brass and barrel life shorter. It's also the least efficient of the top 3 6.5 options. 6.5 x 47 is the most efficient, meaning grains of powder/velocity, brass life and barrel life. It also have the longest neck so you can chase the lans further as they erode and it has a small primer pocket. If you watch my recent video interview with John Krieger of Krieger barrel he explains his theory that the should angle and shorter neck than the 6.5 x 47 and creedmoor plays a role in barrel life as a steeper shoulder like the 260 is directing more of the heat, pressure, etc toward the lans. Interesting theory really. Creedmoor was picked up by Savage and other rifle makers in recent years so ammo companies like Hornady and Prime began producing solid ammo for them which together has fueled it's popularity. In addition to the popularity in PRS competition.

I like 260 Remington better than 6.5 creedmoor because you can make 260 brass from 308.

What about using a bore snake? Instead of a patch? For break in?

I wouldn't. The entire problem is having an abrasive surface rubbing on the crown of the barrel or the throat and chamber and with a bore snake you have zero control. You need to use a coated cleaning rod with a caliber specific bore guide and a nylon brush. Here's a list of products I recommend. wygt.me/d8hrsz2

Watch our other video by John Krieger of Krieger Barrels...he doesn't recommend any break in and neither do it. You could clean it once before you get started but I think firing a shot, cleaning, and repeating is just a waste of time and ammo. You'll see no noticeable benefits. In fact the rifle will shoot worse clean than after a handful of fouling shots. Just go shoot it, but get a good cleaning setup from that list so when the accuracy starts to decline you can give it a proper cleaning, fire some fouling shots then test again and I bet your accuracy will come back. Also keep in mind that as your barrel throat erodes you'll need to seat your bullet out further to maintain the same jump or jam of the bullet.

Still don’t understand how a brass rod and brass brush is ever going to scratch or damage the much harder material that a barrel is made out of. I wish someone could explain this to me. Also from what I understand the old .270 Remington is every bit as accurate as the 6.5 creedmore at long range with correct weight boa-tail bullet. Thanks for the video, happy shooting! ✌️😎👍

Just shoot the new barrel. Many barrel makers, McMillan, Krieger and other barrel makers say to not bother. Ditto for the use of bronze brushes. Mostly superstition. Personally, I've never been able to see a difference, even with custom barrels. Talk to 10 shooters......and you'll get 10 different answers.

Company didn't help me where we need help the most in California. They said they weren't interested in skirting laws & loopholes instead of making a "compliant" rifle which easily adding a $12 fin pistol grip or adding a thordson customs featureless stock to make it compliant. I called a online dealer he changed the pistol grip and I got a RRA lar 8 now. Hearing their version of making a rifle compliant was "abusing, skirting, loopholes" sounded like they have some anti gunners in their ranks.

I dont even clean factory barrels. My last factory was a .308 by Remington. And as of more recent Remington has sucked at production barrels. Key is to not have copper fouling. And bronze brushed are fine. Did I just hear someone tell me that a bronze brush is no good?? Since when will a bronze metal damage steel is beyond me.

Ron Fili I’ve never heard of a bronze brush hurting a steel barrel. LoL. Maybe they should make bronze barrels. They will prob be more accurate. LoL. I’ve used nylon brushes. I don’t have a prob with either or. I mainly use a bore snake. Just run it through 1 time and I’m done.

I use copper brushes every time i clean for ever, never had any degrade in accuracy or anything bad for that matter. Thats a myth and it pains me that suposed professional is saying that BS!
