Dear friends of music, we proudly present our funny version of "Promenade - Walking The Dog" by G. Gershwin, one of his last songs before he died in 1937. This unfortunately unkown song was used in "Shall we dance" (1937) by Mark Sandrich with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers for a certain scene, where Mr. Astaire wants to attract attention to Mrs. Rogers by walking with dogs on the deck of a ship.
Thanks to Julia Menzner and her dog "Arya" for supporting us at the end of the song with a really special performance!

Anyone with a dog will understand this piece. Walking along, getting distracted by interesting smells (and other distractions) but then returning to main theme of walkies. Great!

Walking the Dog is one of many musical numbers written in 1937 by George Gershwin for the Fred Astaire - Ginger Rogers film score for Shall We Dance. In the film, the music accompanies a sequence of walking a dog on board a luxury liner. In 1960, the sequence was published as "Promenade".

In some places, the only people allowed outside have been those walking their dogs so it seems very fitting. Don’t forget, these light-hearted Fred and Ginger movies were made during the Great Depression which was no picnic either. People flocked to the theaters to watch rich people in fancy clothes doing silly things on the big screen.

.Your arrangement incorporates at least one melodic hint of other Gershwin pieces. I heard An American in Paris. How many altogether? Fun.

Hi Ava, you're right. At the end I quote "An American in Paris". My intension for this is the fact that the protagonists of the (original) movie "Shall we dance" (for which the song was composed) with Astaire & Rogers came by ship from Paris back to NYC. :-) There's also another melodic hint at 02:15 . Can you recognize it?
