Beautiful and well done by some folks who appreciate innovative and inspiring music. Why some folks don't appreciate Gershwin is beyond me.

Well, that was a performance for the ages. Bravo to the pianist, the conductor, and the orchestra. Can you beat live music? It is wonderful to at least watch a recording of a sterling performance. Well done to those in charge of filming it. It was most assuredly “live”; the pianist went on a journey, and the orchestra went with him. I have seen and heard this piece many times, since the 1960s, when my father - who did not give presents - bought a Gershwin record for his teenage son. For me, this performance was indeed faithful to Gershwin, and actually, it brought out to me some fresh aspects of this piece. Lastly, there is hope for all of us. I read in the comments that the pianist was 80 when this was recorded. 80! Plaudits to him.
@johnnytungsong87192 жыл бұрын
Why some negative comments? This was, in my humble opinion, absolutely fantastic whether it was true Gershwin or not! As long as people are enjoying making AND listening to the music, where is the problem? The pianist was obviously enjoying himself, even though he’s probably played this many times and the conductor was relaxed and smiling…..how can you not be smiling when you have a full orchestra literally at your fingertips! Tonight I shall be going to bed with George Gershwin….just hope I don’t start conducting in my sleep!

Such an exciting performance! My hat is off to the pianist and conductor! Why not have some fun with making a piece “your own?” To deny that privilege is to deny one the whole reason for music-to enhance Life! I believe Gershwin borrowed lots of ideas from others and made things “his own.” Surely he would take delight in knowing others are experiencing the same joy!

No. 5 Listen. Look at the smile on M. Jansons's face. I have never seen a happier conductor or a more creative piano interpretation. Plus the orchestra really is into it. BTW. When Gershwin was thinking of composing a concert jazz piece it was on a train trip from New York to Boston that the rhythm of the clacking wheels got his creative juices going and he had it all in his head by the time he arrived.

I absolutely love how he plays...brilliantly talented. I was 12 & babysitting when I played a record at their house & fell in love with gershin. I was taking piano lessons at the time. In college I also fell in love with jazz. This composite played is a compilation of both that spoke to me. Loved it....I am now senior citizen & will never forget this joy it gave to me in my 80s. 1966. A kid. Found my parents old "78s." (They seriously weighed a lot. And fragile? I was scared. "If I f--- with one of these?") Played one side at 78 RPM. "Okay. Who's this 'Gershwin' character?" (Boy was I in for a ride.) "Sounds like a combination! Half Russian, half Asian. Or something... Nobody does this!" Still true today. NOBODY is George Gershwin. May we simply thank the guy 100 years after? Cuz Geez..."Georgie" (as he was called) was every bit crazy cool. I think we all know "Georgie" had a breathtaking ear for music. He would have liked anyone "interpreting" his dreams. I for one think they here picked on Gershwin pretty well. Gershwin wanted to be Scott Joplin and Beethoven, all at the same time. I'm going to say he was. AND THESE PEOPLE DID VERY, VERY WELL INDEED. "Georgie" would be proud. Every single instrument patiently waited to suddenly ring true. Nicely done!

I've heard performances of this Gershwin piece in concert halls probably half a dozen times, and innumerable versions on the radio. However, this is by far the most unconventional version that I've encountered -- and I use "unconventional" in the best sense of the word. Traditionalists will very likely not enjoy this version. Nonetheless, for me the interpretation of this piece was both imaginative & appealing! Great job, Mr Pauls & Maestro Jansons!
@jnstonbely52152 жыл бұрын
The Orchestration was...novel, and for jazzists, fine,..-I suppose. But the pianists jazzification of this iconic Gershwin American classic , well I’ll just let it sit with this comment ; I wonder if Mr Gershwin would have liked it ? And I truly believe he really would have to some pleasurable extent !

I love "Rhapsody"! I don't really mind who the orchestra is as long as they don't stray too far. I think any Group playing "Rhapsody" will have it's own interpretation.
