Not wild about the pianist. Deviates too much from Gershwin's intention and seems to be showboating.

All I can say is Bravo!! I loved this version, I loved the clarinetist, he was superb! And Raimonds Paul’s playing even though his fingers hurt was awesome! I don’t know when this was recorded but R Paul’s just turned 88 in January, I’m sure he was quite old when he did this concert.

1966. A kid. Found my parents old "78s." (They seriously weighed a lot. And fragile? I was scared. "If I f--- with one of these?") Played one side at 78 RPM. "Okay. Who's this 'Gershwin' character?" (Boy was I in for a ride.) "Sounds like a combination! Half Russian, half Asian. Or something... Nobody does this!" Still true today. NOBODY is George Gershwin. May we simply thank the guy 100 years after? Cuz Geez..."Georgie" (as he was called) was every bit crazy cool. I think we all know "Georgie" had a breathtaking ear for music. He would have liked anyone "interpreting" his dreams. I for one think they here picked on Gershwin pretty well. Gershwin wanted to be Scott Joplin and Beethoven, all at the same time. I'm going to say he was. AND THESE PEOPLE DID VERY, VERY WELL INDEED. "Georgie" would be proud. Every single instrument patiently waited to suddenly ring true. Nicely done!

What the hell is wrong with people today? THIS is simply so much better than "rap." My god how beautiful. Oh wait. "White" people did it. I keep forgetting we're terrible. That's right. The pianist took an awful lot of liberties compared to the versions I've heard over the last 70 years; he seems to have arthritic problems in his left hand too. Otherwise a very creditable performance which, unlike some other European orchestras, has managed to capture the sound of Gershwin's Jazz Age. Congrats!

Gershwin was more choral aria than today's jazz. Everything was very melodic back then. The song "Summertime" was his. Sweeping melody.

In classical music, if you play one single note differently from what the Holy Writings say, you are an heretic devil who will go head-first to Hell. In jazz and blues, you are expected to play every note your own way. Rhapsody In Blue[s] is, as its name says, a piece of blues, so the pianist will not go head-first to Hell --quite the contrary. I personally find his reinterpretation of the original quite excellent, overcoming his physical problems with his mastery. And, if you listen carefully, he's not the only one taking "liberties"...
