George H. W. Bush had a pretty extensive resume, and after eight years as Reagan's Vice President, he got his turn in the hot seat. He served just one term, which focused largely on the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the Persian Gulf War. What else can we say about this patriarch of a dynasty?

Our history of supporting foreign dictators (so long as they weren't Communist), even at the expense democracy and freedom in those nations, is honestly abhorrent. Kinda makes me think of our current alliance with Saudi Arabia, and their history of bombing innocent civilians and doctors without borders (not to say that we haven't done similar things ourselves).

The Kuwait issue had been ongoing and been limited to the oil fields. There was never an expectation that Hussain would take the whole of Kuwait.
@davew6949
@davew6949 3 жыл бұрын
Saddam was ready to take the rest of the peninsula. Kuwait had served as a fine warm-up. The Arab states of the region were highly panicked. I suppose one bright point out of the whole debacle was the development of new ways to fight oil fires after Saddam ordered his military to set fire to Kuwait's wells.
@janerkenbrack3373
@janerkenbrack3373 3 жыл бұрын
I won't speculate about what Hussain intended. The conspiracy talk is that we lured him into the invasion of Kuwait to rationalize our incursion into the region. This is a fallacy. The long history of the dispute had been over a narrow band of land at their border, and the US wanted no part of that dispute. Our State Department told Hussain that. We were caught unawares by his large scale invasion. Perhaps Hussain misunderstood our position, but not a sinister plot. An error in our intelligence, but not a cunning trap.

How do you retain all ( or at least most ) of the knowledge you have? I've had difficulty with this recently and I wondered if you have any tips.
@K4inan
@K4inan 3 жыл бұрын
A very effective method is by writing it down in your own words, to summarize it. The better you get at summarizing a topic, the more you'll be able to fill in the gaps because you've already built the associations necessary to compile it. Memory works a lot through association, it's why a certain smell can instantly transport you back to a particular time and place. Repetition is also key. Teaching is probably the most effective way of retaining knowledge because it is the application of this method, and it vastly increases your understanding. There are people that can memorize whole pages complex subjects but they can't ''understand'' any of it.

When it comes to politics everything is opinion, even the retelling of said history. Highlighting success A and omitting scandal B or choosing the converse is a choice left to historians and textbook companies. To believe there is even a way to relay history in an unbiased way is disingenuous or naive, you choose. In my estimation, the only way to get the best grasp of the times you’re interested in is to get many different recollections of the same time, then at least you can start to form your own idea of what you think happened. Just an opinion of someone that has a worthless degree in the subject.

Another factor that led to Bush losing re-election in 1992 was the vote being split by Ross Perot, who ran a pretty popular independent campaign. Just like when Teddy Roosevelt’s Progressive party split the Republican vote and led to Woodrow Wilson being president in 1912.
@blakesutherland519
@blakesutherland519 2 жыл бұрын
Without Ross Perot, Bill Clinton wouldn't have won. Looking at the state by state numbers, Perot made it possible for Clinton to carry most of the states he won that would've otherwise went to Bush. Bill Clinton wasn't nearly as popular a figure as he has been made out to be. The left couldn't stand him because they viewed him as too conservative and the fading conservative wing of the Democratic party couldn't stand him because they basically went extinct in 1994. The Democratic party has been losing a greater share of the rural voter ever since. Also. His trade policies rapidly sped up the death of America's industrial and manufacturing sector. Barack Obama is actually the most popular Democratic figure since FDR and his popular vote majorities make that clear. Bill Clinton never got above 49% of the popular vote in either of his elections. Reagan is probably still the most popular political figure overall since Franklin Roosevelt.

I also enjoy how many people--in this case establishment/corporate Democrats--enjoy ignoring Perot's impact but cling to Nader's influence in 2020. Simply look at the digits and tell me your eyes don't roll. Even if Perot's voters went 60/40 to Bush/Clinton that would've made a major shift in the EC. Another fact: Bush was the last president to be elected president after a previous administration of the same party and the first incumbent Vice President to be elected president since Martin Van Buren.

I suppose you can technically say that Truman doesn't qualify since you used the term "incumbent VP", but that just makes it clear that it is a pretty lame thing to brag about. Oh, who was the last left-handed VP with red hair elected for president who was formerly a senator from Rhode Island?!?!!?! Yawn.

@@ProfessorDaveExplains Everyone knows what William Horton did after his furlough, but I also know what he did to get the murder 1 conviction as it was a brutal pointless murder Not that far from where I live. I also know about the criminal justice system , why he was in a minimum security, never mind let out, is beyond comprehension. What does that have to do with race? The left reveals its own racism by constantly making things about race, instead of just taking it on its own merits. THEY are making him part of " a group" instead of just letting him stand on individual merits, as simply a man.....also the " October surprise" was investigated for 12 years and nothing ever became of it. For some reason it just can't be accepted that maybe Iran knew the Reagan Bush administration wasn't gonna pull any punches and maybe Iran actually feared them alot more than Carter. Maybe Iran also had there own problems with Carter and wanted to humiliate him for whatever reason. This is another common thread, basically being poor loosers. In 1972 after 4 years in office, Nixon won by a landslide months AFTER Watergate but the dems and especially the media hated him for it and couldn't accept this. They just had to beat that scandal to death. Then in 1980 they had to invent the Oct. Surprise to explain why Americans hated Carter's weak foreign policy. They had to invent Russian collusion in 2016 to explain why Hillary who spent more money,had mainstream media and Hollywood on her side, and experience, lost to Trump. Now they are indicted Trump for everything under the sun. So why not that? They said it was a definite back in 2017 so what happened to all that proof? Why did Hillary Clinton's campaign manager admit she faked some of that Russian collusion story? Why isn't she under indictment? And to show you it's not about party I don't think Trump won in 2020 but you know how he just can't except it? That's how the left can't except their defeats and have to make up some excuse. It's ironic that one of there favorite presidents is LBJ a man who escalated the Vietnam War from a couple hundred to 30000 dead on his watch, who destroyed society with the war on poverty, who was riddled with scandal with Bobby Baker and Billie Sol Estees who was linked to many murders, including the one Mac Wallace( his confidant) was CONVICTED of but given 5 years probation by a LBJ crony judge. He is forgiven all this for signing a piece of paper in 1964. Even tho he had opposed civil rights for 30 years up to that point and was a notorious racist ( and drunk) according to multiple sources.. I say this for 2 reasons 1) bc the left will endorse anybody who claims to identify w there cause. 2) no matter how bad you say Nixon is he had nothing on LBJ but bc he signed a piece of paper that warms the cockles of the leftist heart, he's ok. ..Joe Biden in 2020 saying " white supremacy " is the biggest threat in America today. I've lived in many cities. I don't see much white supremacy. I saw blm burning down parts of the country. But no white supremacy. He's using race to get votes it's so transparent. What about the " insurrection " of pro Palestinian extremist a couple of weeks ago? How come that's ok? Can you imagine if they were Trump supporters? The media would've had a field day. But bc they are against Israel, who is our greatest ally, some how its ok. Not cool. Oh what happened to those 51 intel officers who said it wasn't hunters laptop🤣
