It's the WHITE ALBUM. With 20/20 hind sight, it's wonderful. It couldn't be anything but 4 sides. It's who and what they were at the time. I still listen to it. And when I do it's generally played from beginning to end. I do the same with Exile on Main Street. Whole LP, all the way through. They're big. But I believe, to get the full impact and genius of either, that's how they need to be listened to.

Jagger said, they recorded Exile to be listened to one side at a time separately, not intended to be listened to in one whole listen or performance , they had different feels to each side, but really, to each to their own. Great album, I like Sticky and Gimme Shelter better but Exile is up there close along with Some Girls.

Can't imagine anything being any different than the exact thing they put out. Rarely do artists hear what the listeners hear, in this case a masterpiece. They'll be so critical while we're all like, what? What are you talking about? This is like perfect. But I guess if they weren't so hard on themselves, we wouldn't have this masterpiece and others they always seemed to produce.

More than any other Beatles Album, The White Album is like it's own organism changing forms throughout the years. People have different opinions on it depending on their age and how many times they've listened to it. I can easily see it being condensed to a single album, but I'm glad it wasn't because it's a unique experience different to Sgt Peppers and Abbey Road.

It was a necessity, really. Untitled albums were a real nightmare for distributors and music stores, not to mention customers. They'd get mixed up with the many bootlegs, foreign versions and weird cover-versions that were around in those days. A kid in those days might walk into a store trying to buy the new Beatles album and the clerk (who knew nothing about the beatles) would sell him a german-language cover version of "Meet the Beatles!" or some such.

There are three absolutely great double albums that should be double albums: The White Album - The Beatles Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John The Wall - Pink Floyd Not one single song should be removed from any of them. And, being an extreme fan of Elton John, I'm going to add his most musically masterful album (not his "best" album, but definitely his most musical album) to that list: Blue Moves - Elton John BTW. Here are Elton John's five best albums: 1) Tumbleweed Connection 2) Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 3) Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy 4) Blue Moves 5) Madman Across The Water

Wonder if there’s any interviews where he praises something Paul did. Everything I’ve ever consumed of George’s is only ever praise of John and swipes at Paul. In Get Back it looked like Paul was just the easier whipping boy for him to talk back to and criticise whilst John was actually the most dismissive of his work
@nickystee8396
@nickystee8396 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. John straight-up refused to even play on George's songs in the later years, but George always seemed to harbor a deep resentment toward Paul, which continued even into the 90's when they were compiling the Anthology. He relished every opportunity to slam Paul in the press ("I wouldn't play in a band with Paul again. It's not personal, it's musical". I don't know, i think it miiiight have been a bit personal too. I wasn't there, though..) For a man supposedly so spiritual and meditative, George Harrison really seemed unable to let go of some ancient grudges.

@dan2050
@dan2050 2 жыл бұрын
@@classiclife7204 George did say that Paul brought his A game on George’s songs. And in get back Paul is very excited about Old Brown Shoe and even I Me Mine. I didn’t see anything wrong about Pauls reaction to Something. Paul played great on that song and said it was great in his comments on Abbey Road. Paul always complimented John and George songs in any interview. But John and George seemed to insult Paul often. Jealousy is a powerful emotion.

'The three lads were ok, but Lennon was an arsehole'. I know that saying bad things about JL normally means you are going to meet Satan, but that's what he told me. He also met The Stones. He said Keith had his feet on the table, and when he said 'Oi! get your feet off the table!', Keith shot out of his char, swept a sleeve over the table and said he was sorry. Make of all this what you will, music lovers. X

The mans bosses were putting money and time into them, and they had to play by the rules on the road to fame. Today, Keith would do something and everyone would applaud. Back then, they were just scruffy kids who were just an investment. Drivers were there to keep an eye on them, not pander to them, also, they were often normal working people who had seen war and discipline. So, some little turd with long hair with his feet on the table is going to get told to pull himself together. Keith had good manners and did as he was told.

It's mildly amusing to hear George say that The White Album (a double album) was too big, too much for listeners to really hear and take in. This is the same man who in two years time would go on to release a triple album, All Things Must Pass, a great work for sure, among the best if not the best of the group's solo work, but I can't imagine the possibility of something being too much couldn't still apply here, especially because you might have reason to believe that people may not be as readily invested in solo work over Beatles material. I'm not necessarily saying he DID put too many songs on All Things Must Pass, some people rather enjoy it, but it is quite a lot to take in for sure. I just find it funny he could change his mind after talking about The White Album being too much, something which I wasn't aware of until this video was posted.

“Revolution 9” was an 8 1/2 minute wank fest to impress a junkie groupie as George timidly acknowledges here, but I too am glad it’s on the album because it elevates the other weak songs on the album by comparison with it, and because it serves as a cautionary tale about how pretentiousness is more damaging to creativity than any drug imaginable. “Good Night” comes as such a palette cleansing relief after it, where it might have seemed mawkish otherwise. Lennon had many moments of great invention and depth of emotion on this album, especially with “Julia.” McCartney whipsaws between hard rock and deliberate corniness, as he will do, but it’s hard to deny the influence of songs like “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?,” “Birthday,” and “Helter Skelter” on later hard rock and even heavy metal acts. George’s contributions were a little lackluster, to be honest, compared to what he did on “Abbey Road” and “All Things Must Pass,” with the exception of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” which is a guitar hero anthem. He was right that this is an album that has to grow on you, like “Exile on Main St.” was for the Stones. That seems to be the case with most double albums of the rock era. “Quadrophenia,” “Physical Graffiti,” and “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway” are also pretty challenging on first listen, and “The Beatles” (93 mins) is longer than all of them, save The Lamb” (94 mins). Knock out “Revolution 9” and you hit the sweet spot for a double LP. Oh, and “Honey Pie.” “Honey Pie” sounds like McCartney trying to impress a 70-year-old groupie.
