We have lost so many great singers and song writers it really makes you wonder if anyone will ever be that good again and not just in Country music... We had great music from 50's to the 90's most of the music today is good but in my opinion not great, but then I am partial to the oldies... Then again I am 59 years young so I hope y'all understand...

FYI- Randy Travis was ‘80’s, 90’s, 2000’s. George Jones , a true song stylist , came along in the 50’s!, and he carried through for over 60 years. Olé “ Possum” was a genuine original for those that followed , such as Travis, could/can only hope to emulate and admire.

Many of those mentioned in the lyrics are only by nickname. This song was originally produced in 19855 when many of them were still alive, and at that time it didn't get the best reactions for that reason. I'm watching this on Aug 11, which coincidentally is my mother's 79th birthday. We had a good talk on the phone, as we live 600 miles apart. Keep on reacting, and being who you are. God Bless You.

MRM For a country girl this song is powerful. The evolution of country music over the years has been disappointing. The old songs were more powerful and true to the roots of us. Each of these references in the song are references to either country singers, or some like Elvis, are 50s era rock or rockabilly singers. "The outlaw that walks through Jessi's dreams", for example refers to Waylon Jennings, and his (still living) wife Jessi Colter. The Outlaw Country movement in the 70s was one of the greatest eras of real country music. And Waylon, Willie and several others, exemplified it. Red-headed Stranger refers to a Willie Nelson song, and Willie used to have red hair. The Man In Black (Johnny Cash), sang Folsom Prison Blues. The "Okie From Muskogee", refers to one of "The Hagg's" songs, Merle Haggard. "Hello Darling", was a famous song by Harold Jenkins, whose stage name was Conway Twitty, taken from two little towns in Texas. The studio version is, in this case, a LOT better. But it's hard to fault "The Possum", otherwise known as "No Show" Jones. Who was known for getting drunk and not showing up for concerts, or showing up late. He once, after being deprived of alcohol in his house, and ANY means of transportation...was picked up by the police for driving his riding lawnmower to the convenience store for booze, lol. He was quite a "character" (which is ironically a corruption of the similarly sounding word "caricature"). George Jones, despite his many character flaws, which everyone has of one kind or another, was one of the greatest singers of REAL country music, in the history of the genre. And true to this utterly predictive song, no one is filling, or even trying to fill his gigantic shoes in mainstream country today, or whatever is trying to pass itself off as mainstream country. His shoes will remain unfilled till this WHOLLY unworthy crop of untalented pikers is gone from the scene! And the last tailgate party song, bro country, and song about sexy tractors, right along with them!
