I think the Danish woman had an important point. Most Scandinavians have no expectations of becoming extremely rich. Most of us just want a comfortable life where we are paid a fair salary and can avoid financial worries for our children's education, health expenses, unemployment, and can expect a reasonable retirement or disability pension. We also enjoy 4-5 weeks paid vacation (Scandinavians are the worlds most travelled people). If you are one of the few who dream of getting very rich and willing to work hard for it, it's also possible in Scandinavia. In fact Norway has a higher density of billionaires than the US.

Before the U.S. government, lawyers, Congress, federal regulators, etc, started meddling in healthcare, medical coverage was cheap. In free market areas like Lasik, chiropractic, alternative medicine, dentistry, etc, medical costs are still reasonable, just like software, networking, home appliances, and other activities that are free market.

The question about scale is a little vapid, attempting to imply that the US can't afford such socially conscious systems due to population. It glosses over the obvious fact that more people equals more taxpayers to fund those systems. Mr. Lakey aptly uses the examples of Social Security and Medicare because they flatly debunk the argument of scale.

it makes no sense to say "We have more people to tax, so we cannot pay for these systems" It's inept of any logic what so ever. we have a higher population, we can do more social programs than the swedes and danes.

Sorry, Norwegians, the Finns are the most complaining and critical people in the world, despite being the happiest ( i.e. content) nation in the world for the 4th year in a row. Ergo: it is important to complain, and not to sugar-coat BS. Complaining with a 1) view on improving things, and 2) demanding better conditions, and 3) finding possible solutions. This is such a wonderful educational speech! Should be a TED-talk, too! Is it already?

Having lived in Sweden, and, to a lesser extent, in Denmark, my Swedish blood runs cold in knowing there's no where near the happiness found in the Benelux region, especially Belgium. Although one finds less unhappy citizens in Scandinavian countries in comparison, those truly joyful and inspiring are just way too few. Their policing & justice systems are also poor and leave a lot to be desired; much is not right.

One problem with the Nordic Model is that it can be too authoritarian. For instance, Sweden is not very socially liberal. When they had a chance to decriminalize prostitution, they instead chose to make it illegal for men to buy sex (but not illegal for women to sell it). Why arrest anyone for it?? They see paying for consensual sex as "rape" due to radical feminism that took over there. It's simply insane. So draconian and puritanical. Otherwise, I do like the social welfare and the focus on making the economy work for everyone instead of primarily the rich.

This guy seems to be illiterate in mathematics when it comes to welfare. You can impossibly pay less for any kinds of service through a welfare system than doing it privately, unless you believe that the bureaucrats administering the welfare system work for free. Instead I believe that many kinds of service are of much less good quality in Scandinavia than that in USA. Of course Norway has oil money therefore may be able to afford some (but more often horrifying) waste by the welfare bureaucrats, but in Sweden people die waiting for treatment, or the Swedish school cannot deliver sufficient knowledge to the kids. How much is this welfare system worth if you cannot even get medicare in time and your kids cannot get enough knowledge? Another thing is that the Scandinavian welfare system was imposed AFTER that Scandinavia had become rich through the free market economy and personal responsibility, not the other way around: The Scandinavian welfare system made Scandinavia rich. If you look at how Sweden develops after it had adopted the Scandinavian welfare system you will see that Sweden has been declining consistently all since then. Again Norway has oil money therefore it may be able to prolong the death. But death is inevitable nevertheless.
@heesofi
@heesofi 3 жыл бұрын
that is why you have to go to statistics to disprove that. As for your biased, one-eyed view that service cannot possibly be up to par with the US quality standards, you just have to listen to Americans who actually have been treated in any of the Scandinavian healthcare systems...But you won´t do that , will you. Dismissing what is right in your face is your prerogative, but it does not do you any credit.... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/opp3ZMdoyJOvd6s.html

@@heesofi Stop your lies, please. Thomas Sowell: It is amazing that people who think we cannot afford to pay for doctors, hospitals and medication somehow can afford to pay for doctors, hospitals, medication and government bureaucracy that administer it. Ask you this question: where does the government bureaucracy get their money when administering medicare? What if we get rid of this extra expense which is horrifyingly expensive?

Norway spends 2/3rds what the USA spend on healthcare. He fails to mention that the USA is 60 times larger than Norway. If we wanted to scale that the USA spends 3.2 trillion of healthcare currently. We would have to spend 192 trillion to match the per-capita of Norway. The USA total GDP is only $21 trillion. Plus USA is the leader is medical research which also cost a lot of money to fund experimental medicines that way not turn profitable.

the blind spot in the American point of view is that the mere concept of making healthcare a money making scheme is simply wrong; We the population want a healthy life` and it is provided for....In the US it is OK to rob people blind and not to include everybody, how is that a fair treatment of your own citizens. How will that provide you with a healthy labour force? How will it eradicate simple deseases and an early death? I had a double Hernia op and a cancer operatin within 4 months in ´09 when I was 55. All paid for including diapers and transport to hospitals. I did not go bankrupt... I could have retired this October but will carry on till I´m 70. I love my job. A sound business investment in my health, I think !
