I saw a clinic he did in Charlotte a number of years ago and it was incredible. He didn’t play a single repeated lick or idea. The flow of original ideas alone was incredible. He’s a beast.

Thanks for posting. George is in the line of Hendrix, Beck, and Eddie in the stuff he gets out of a guitar. "Jacking off vibrato" is hilarious, I've looked for a term for this since seeing DeMartini do it in the '80s. "Work on your jacking off" 😂. One of my all time faves is Tangled in the Web, Lynch Mob. Rock on George! Awesome work!

I think George is the best unschooled guitarist ever. For a guy who knows almost no music theory, the level of skill and technique that he has achieved is phenomenal. He’s better than most schooled guitarist.

Technically George is one of the sloppiest players around. And it became even worse. When he's improvising, especially nowadays using his thumb and forefinger plucking technique, it's almost embarrassing. You don't have to be 60 to have good ears and an understanding of music. George is way better when he knows what he has to play from the very start. What CAN push George into some kind of top 10 is that you can always tell him from all the others. No matter if live or on an album, you always and almost immediately know "That's George Lynch". I think that's one of his biggest accomplishments. He is unique. But top 10 best guitarists? Only if you don't give a damn about clean playing. It's VERY important for every musician. Ok, it's your opinion, but...naah.

George just plays. He simply has a gift and talent that some do not have. Now if you cannot see that, you are blind.He tries to show his gift that he has, the best way he knows how. I get what he is doing and how he does it. But I be damned if I can be like George. George is only George. And give all the glory to God*/Christ Jesus*. AMEN George would be nothing with out The Father. With that said, George is a force to behold.

Back when this came out it didn't look so cheap. Looking at it 30 years later, you can see just how thrown together it really was. Looks like it was done in his spare time. I still love it and I still love his guitar style

i actually met george lynch and here’s the story: it was after a concert i went outside to wear the buses should be and i saw him behind a gate. then my mom yelled his name and he came over and said “i’m sorry i’m not feeling that good” and i got an autograph

I love the song Mr. Scary but after about 2/3 the way into the song at 38:30 he goes into a whole different set of chord changes and the whole thing changes for me It's like the song graduated into something a little more mature and the solo eases into a groove that elevates the song beyond mere emotional completeness I consider George to be one of the best at using the recording process to refine a song or melody to the point where it could no longer be made to be any better And layering? Forget about it! The champ! Many great memories are tied to Dokken and Lynch Mob songs so Thank you Mr. Lynch!

Mr. Scary indeed. Lynch is one of the most unique and stylized guitarists to have ever played the instrument. One cannot simply "learn" to play like George. During this era of his career, no one could better Lynch. In certain attributes of facility and theoretical knowledge, sure, but in totality of axe awesomeness, not a chance. At this level of greatness there is no better or worse, just different. VERY few professional musicians will ever even approach such exalted heights of greatness. George Lynch is a treasure. Sure, the man can be "off", but when he is on, well, Mr. Scary emerges. And faces melt.

It's quite funny how he knows scale shapes but doesn't know how they fit in terms of theory, and lots of people seem to be blown away by that. A lot of guitar players are the same, they can rip through a great solo, or improvise for hours over a backing track. But ask them what chord notes they're trying to target they simply don't know (but their ear does). It's funny how we see many examples like this, yet people still believe you can't become great at guitar just by practicing technique and developing your ear.

Well, count me among those who are blown away by his "untutored" sound. All this fanaticism about theory has produced legions of fleet-fingered but soulless automatons who are as distinguishable as grapes in a bag. In the end, it's about how you sound. Who cares how you got there? Sometimes I think too much music theory inhibits creativity.

His technique is his and it’s very unique and unorthodox- his stuff is tricky to learn just because of that. Even tho playing super fast and clean is hard in its own way going up and down a scale in one way is easier than the little Flurries and slides he is amazing at doing

He's truly a gifted player. I was fortunate to be young player, 15 in 85 when I started playing, when Dokken started getting big from being on Mtv. I saw It's Not Love play on Mtv for the very first time. He plays some amazing solos and his improv skills are incredible for an ear learned player. Everything fits beautifully and melodically. That's the one thing I was not capable of learning. I can figure out any of his solos, but to lay down an equal solo to a rhythm track is impossible for me.

This is it guys. Make YOUR style and attack that guitar and make it play your way and only do your versions of songs. NEVER EVER note for not copies. George, Jimmy, Eddie...all had their own style and power and creativity. The edge too. Everybody is different, every guitar is different, every amp....do your own thing and keep going

16:19 Ahhh... that lovely "horizontal" Sitar-like vibrato. Truly innovative and unique! Only heard Warren DiMartini and Greg Howe pull it off as well as George. For me, for some odd reason, I just can't get it to sound smooth like George. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I think I may be pressing (er..."jacking") it too hard, because I hear the notes of the adjacent frets as "pitches" too strongly.

Some people call it the Pentatonic scale but I noticed whenever I would play it, panties would rain down on the stage so I just started calling it panty tonic because apparently it removes panties and sometimes bras would come off and ta tas ta dah thus the pan ta ta nic Either that or he got it mixed up with hair product and it was the Pantene tonic scale . Either way it’s awesome and it doesn’t matter if George calls it the pantatonic that’s what it will be referred to.

I heard somewhere he's 100% illiterate. Kinda fits with his personalized language & misstating terms like "double stop" or "trill effect" or "voodoo chilD" :D Can we find a clip where George plays without effects? Don't care much about hair, but prefer Ken doll with clothes on :p Regardless, love that he's willing to share with seemingly no ego, speaking honestly from the heart. Anyone meet the guy? The common denominators I hear between George Lynch and Jim Hendrix are: I heard both using the whammy bar, they both mostly use electric guitars, and they both use some sort of distortion. Maybe my ears are a bit messed up. Lol!!!

I'm working on pinpointing the timeline and variations of Lynch's ADA MP1 rig he was using in the late 80s. I can see one in a 2U rack behind him with his Roland SDE3000 up top, but can anyone tell me what the second unit in that rack is? My intuition tells me either a Yamaha SPX90 or R1000. Also any insight into what model Mesa head he's running through? These questions are of the utmost importance.

Chip Roberts i am not sure if he uses the ada mp-1 in that video But you should defenitely check his clinics from 1989. he is using an mp-1 in both videos an my favourite one is the one in the class room. He boosts it with a rat an uses the roland sde 3000 with a delay of 340ms and the spx is not used. He is explaining everything. So keep sure to watch the whole video. The boogie power amp you see in this video is a mesa boogie stereo simul class 295. I am quite addicted for those lynch videos where he uses the mp-1. i am a huge fan of that unit :-D

Frankly, George always sounded like a mess during the instructional portions of these videos. But the performance sections were another story ... amazing!
