"1984" is no longer a novel providing warnings regarding the future; it is now in 2021 a "how-to" book being used by those who are obsessed with implementing control with themselves being the power brokers.

Orwell's notes (at 11:40) re. writing the book: "The General Layout As Follows - Build Up of: a) The system of organized lying in which the society is founded, b) The way in which this is done - falsification of records, etc., c) The nightmare feeling caused by the disappearance of objective truths

the 1st time I read 1984 in the 80's it scared the crap out of me. A lot of stuff in the book came true and it was wrote in the 1950's! What was he thinking back then??

That contemporary critics describe 1984 as other than a critique of or warning about socialism, especially its form and apparent trajectory in the mid 20th century, is telling.

You gotta read the book. From what I remember, it was a gradual thing. The dictionary, for example didn't change over night. They would put out new ones over the years with fewer and fewer words. They used popular culture to inforce the language and the party standard. So it's like, as the new comes in the old is pushed further and further away and demonized as evil. So even if someone were to encounter something from the past they really would have no real way to process it. It would like just be rejected as "double bad". The control on language and culture allowed the Engsoc government to control the minds.

That BBC building has to be the most ugly structure imposed on the human race. I picture Orwell confronting the exterior and mounting that dreadful staircase -- it must have felt like a climb into perdition. Now I better understand the terror and dehumanization he evoked so well in 1984. I could not have returned there on a regular basis.

@Matthew Sanders you're not intelectual enough to understand the writings of Orwell (and probably not another above a 6yo). 1984 is not about being watched. It's about state control. I suggest you start start the book over again and leave your biases at the cover. Do not try to confirm your biases either. As for rubbish collection that is just silly. If anything it proves Orwell's perspective. People are compelled to labour and pay for for state control. Think about it. Off you go.

@Matthew Sanders it's the free 'market' that pays for everything the government/state does. Learn some basic economics. Low information voters.

@Matthew Sanders you'll find that it's the free market that bailed out the state. Also, you'll find its those rich people that are sustaining your use of the state. One of them is keeping you alive and pays more than you could ever imagine into your state racket. Now read 1984.

@@sizzlean9459 Well, Sizzlean, it might surprise you that mute buttons are not task-specific, and the obnoxious & constantly repetitive music was an unnecessary distraction.
