The Slavery Issue Context is so important. In the late 1700s, there were all kinds of customs that were widely accepted that are not accepted in 2022. In 1787, a man could court and marry very young women. Parents could beat the hell out of their kids. Husbands could beat their wives. It was just a different world. When guys like Jefferson, Washington, Franklin and the other Founders came along, their ideas about freedom and democracy were truly radical. Yes, freedom & liberty did not fully apply to black people or women at the time, but it was at least a start. They let the genie out of the bottle. And that meant that EVENTUALLY, we would work hard so that the values enumerated in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution would apply to all. That effort continues today. So, bottom line. It's okay to like and admire the iconic heroes of America's early years. If for nothing else than the fact that they got the ball rolling.

I was there a few yrs ago and I was so moved that my body just felt a part of this place. My family may be related to the Lee's family..where Henry Lee was one of George's friend and his son was the famous Robert E. Lee.

Pretty good documentary Justin. You did about as well as you could considering some of the horrid conditions suffered by the slaves here in the South and Mount Vernon. I bought my kids here and once they saw the slave conditions they were done. Waste of money. If you want a complete experience, go to the Mount Vernon restaurant and be served by black and white servants. Do not believe that crap about slaves being better off in Mount Vernon. Slave overseers were the same everywhere and aristocratic owners had a penchant for looking the other way when injustices occurred. Just sayin!
