Both my wife and I grew up on Saint Simons Island in the 60s and returned eight years ago when I retired. We enjoyed your episode, as we always like watching anything featuring our Island. A few corrections for you: It's Saint SIMONS Island, not Simon, but you did get that right later on. It's the Cloister Hotel, not Cloisters. I worked in the Cloister Beach Club snack bar when I was in high school and got to meet a lot of celebrities who summered on Sea Island. The tips were awesome. My wife worked there as a photographer during her summer breaks from UGA. And it's the Golden Isles, not Golden Coast. Now you can sound like a local. Georgia Sea Grill is one of our favorite restaurants. Southern Soul Barbecue justly deserves its good reputation. It's even been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Fort Frederica once housed the largest British garrison in North America. The Spanish invaded the Island in 1746, captured Fort Saint Simons, near the present-day lighthouse and then advanced upon Fort Frederica along the Military Road. They stopped for the night along a bend of the river, believing the surrounding marshland would protect them. British soldiers, mostly Highlanders, along with some Indian allies, attacked out of the marshes and slaughtered the Spanish regiment. The only casualty the British suffered was one civilian volunteer who had a heart attack while chasing the Spanish. Known as the Battle of Bloody Marsh, that area is now a National Monument. The Spanish fled back to Florida and never threatened the Georgia colony again. I grew up near the lighthouse and had that light flashing past my bedroom window all night, every night. During the first six months after Pearl Harbor, German U-Boats ran wild off the coast of the United States during Operation Drum Beat. The U-Boat skippers called it the Happy Times, sinking 397 merchant ships, mostly oil tankers. U.S. cities and towns refused to enact blackouts and their lights perfectly backlighted the ships for the enemy submarines. Thousands of Allied sailors lost their lives during this period. My father-in-law, a 1935 Naval Academy grad, was actually stationed on Saint Simons briefly during World War II while attending a radar training school. The King and Prince Hotel served as officer quarters back then. The name of its restaurant, Echo, reflects that heritage, Echo as in radar echo. Embers has been a favorite of ours since it first opened. Palmers and Palm Coast, both in the Village, are great breakfast spots. As you noted, Palmers has a more robust menu. Delany's Bistro, near Sea Palms, is far and away the best dining experience on Saint Simons. One needs reservations far in advance but it is well worth it if you can get in.

WoW! Its our pleasure to read your comments and especially the ones about Spanish invasion and your Father-in-Law actually taking part in the World War II. Thank you for correcting some of our facts, We just try to bring forth as much we can and present it in the best possibly way for our viewers :)

A local, I enjoyed your video. You did find many of the local's favorite spots. A tiny clarification: Sapelo ("sap-el-o") is a different barrier island than St Simons. The east coast of Georgia has a series of barrier islands and Sapelo, St Simons, Sea Island and Jekyll Island are four (4) of them. Of course, you couldn't see everything while visiting. Let me add that Jekyll Island has The Georgia Sea Turtle Center (conservation at its best) and Mosaics Museum and Millionaire Village (life during the Gilded Age). Thank you for sharing the Golden Isles with your viewers.

I so enjoyed your video and all of the interesting facts and places to see. My only concern is the watered down version of the Christophe Poulan duBignon history. If stating history please do not water it down. His" indentured servants" were slaves who worked the land and provided the family with the ability to maintain their prominence and privilege. He also had a "Mulattoe" woman in addition to his wife named Maria Teresa and her daughter Marguerite who were freed upon his death. I just thought I would offer a little more insight to your history lesson. Far too often "our" true history, the good the bad and the ugly is washed/ watered down. I offer this not to cause shame or blame just as historical fact. Let's not fear accurate history. Much like you I like to explore the history of the places I visit but often times find I have to do a cross reference for the true history. Again I appreciate your info, time and willingness to share history and experiences in the fabulous places you visit. We have a planned trip next week there.

Apologies correction: his Mulatto woman was Maria and her daughter was Marguerite.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. I think you are right because we did left out some details about the duBignon history but most probably in order to keep it brief. But we do plan to post a complete video focused on the duBignon History. We wish you a wonderful trip filled with fun and new experiences.

Stop with the history lessons. We are all capable of reading the monuments.
