I attempted to cross NORWAY in a completely straight line. (PART 1)

Here it is, the eagerly anticipated mission across Norway, my chance to put the ghosts of Wales behind me and finally succeed in crossing a country in a straight line. The vast majority of this 17 mile journey would be devoid of the farmers, hedges, brambles and fences that littered the Welsh countryside, but where it lacked in those things it would more than make up for in vast lakes, rugged mountains, mystical forests and slimy swamps. Join me on a logistically challenging, nerve rattling adventure through the wilderness of northern Norway and let's see if I'd be flying home completed, or defeated.

Same thing in Scotland I believe, right to roam rather than "trespass unless it's public land". I think about 80% of green space in England is private property so it sucks. England is messed up in that regard, very few places to wild camp legally.
@thespankmyfrank
@thespankmyfrank 3 жыл бұрын
Yup, same in Sweden. You're allowed to walk on any land, even private land. The only thing is you can't destroy plants or wildlife, you can't walk too close to homes (as in places people actually live in, other buildings are fine) and you have to clean up after yourself. Other than that, you're free to walk and camp anywhere you like.
@akatizzle1585
@akatizzle1585 3 жыл бұрын
Its actually quite a contentious point in English & Welsh law too... there's forever been battles between private land owners/local government and the rambling society/the general public in access to land disputes, and unfortunately we only have until 2025 to find all publicly owned land before no more can be claimed. It's quite sad... however at least trespass is not a criminal offense.

@@taurbeer yeah well he also just crossed Norway at some random point. It would definitely be feasible to do the same thing in Denmark from south to north. Plus it would be a nice finish line to stand with a foot in each sea. But anyways, I don't see a need to discuss the finer details of such a trek, as it never occurred. I was simply pointing out that Norway is not an easy country to walk across terrain wise, and that there would have been other countries in Europe, with much friendlier terrain.

I nearly died in Peru when going to a "semi dried out lake bed" i dunno if they'd lowered the level on purpose or it was just a dry season.. it was a lake with a dam... the level was lower than normal, an obvious higher line and different colouration in rocks etc.. i went down to a sandy area to get to the water's edge... suddenly the sandy bank started to collapse under my feet... the edge of the lake turned out to be an overhanging cliff or loose sand. I fell backwards to try not to fall in but every time i tried to push myself out with my feet, more & more of the bank collapsed under my feet and my legs started to get wet. Luckily I managed to drag myself out before the entire cliff collapsed into the water. I'm pretty sure I would have died if I'd gone in the water. I was completely alone, having trekked there for miles. The water of the lake was from meltwater of a glacier, barely above freezing. I would not have been able to climb back out again. The entire edge of the lake was a steep cliff of loose sand... People need to be very careful of some places that seem quite beautiful and innocuous (innoxious?).

@@zackirvine7152 obviously you watch the same content. pro tip if you want to reset the KZfaq algorithm go to the home page, click on the three dots and then click on "do not recommend this channel" on every video topic/channel you want a new "perspective on". do that then refresh and repeat 3-5 times. You'll get suggested new videos that you might not have watched before and eventually get recommended back to the same videos you used to watch because it's related to your viewing habit. I do that on most of the music channels I'm subscribed too, one annoying part of KZfaq is that you get recommended the same video you already watched before, so instead of unsubscribing for "unoriginal content" I just purge my recommendation, confuse the algorithm I get recommended related content that I didn't watch before because the old stuff was always recommended, and land back on stuff I really enjoy plus the new stuff.

@@nikolaiblm1255 The dreaded "hanging-marshes". Nearly went into one, but was able to drag myself out. Funny story, actually. Some guy I knew once told a story of how he got stuck in one while orienteering, (running after waypoints on a map in sequence). He got stuck in this really inconspicious plot in the middle of the woods (the worst kind of hanging marsh), and sank to his shoulders before he stopped, and was eventually saved. Back to my story. When I stepped one foot onto the marsh, I could feel the "wavy" unsteadiness and recognized it, using my momentum to fall/dive forwards and grab a branch. As I dragged myself up, I found a plastic thingy, which I later found contained a map! The guy was 'bout a head and a shoulder taller than me, by the way :) Anyways, the muddy bits this guy crossed should've not been crossed, he should've called it off, unless he had a board or something wiht him.

You should maybe get a “pack raft”instead of the kayak. They are quite expensive, but they only weigh a couple of kilos and take up a very little amount of space. You blow them up so they can be put in the bottom of a backpack with no problem and then blow it up when you need it. It is made by a special nasa material so it can handle rough, rocky places and they are very sturdy.
