Can we cross the UK's 2nd largest city without using a single road?

It's here. Quite possible my maddest mission to date.
Back in April I convinced my poor brother to join me once more as we made an audacious attempt to cross the entire city of Birmingham, from Sandwell in the west over to Solihull in the East, without using and roads or canals.
With more people, more security, more filth and sewage and some of Birmingham's most knife crime ridden housing estates, this one promised to be a serious step up from the already challenging Black Country Mission from back in 2021.
There had to be slightly more leeway whilst crossing roads this time, but some of the shit we had to go through more than makes up for that I reckon.
This one was tricky to film and edit! show your support by liking the video and subscribing if you haven't already.

He won't have been lying. Narrow boats are easy to make go forward, but easily crashed. I've sailed one before. We came across a slightly larger one in a canal that had crashed and was span about 80⁰ the wrong way and was stuck, it's really easy to do if you aren't used to them. Me, my mate, and my dad had to help unwedge the boat. He also wouldn't have been able to simply stop where he was, there aren't exactly brakes to immediately stop. He will have genuinely just not been able to help them lol.

I have to say I really like the No Roads Missions, it is how I found the channel. Personally I'd be interested to see how large a city you could do a pure No Roads (as in no crossing of roads at all) or if it is totally unfeasible as when the city gets smaller it has less bridges or adjoining roofs.
@BraydenSMoore
@BraydenSMoore 11 ай бұрын
Small enough and you could do it just by following one body of water (river, creek, etc) from one side to the other. Maybe there's a middle point where it gets hard, but I reckon the hardest would be a large north american city like Toronto or Manhattan where it might genuinely be impossible.
@callum2547
@callum2547 11 ай бұрын
@@BraydenSMoore Most cities have a river running through them so you could do most of them like that. You could do London by just following the Thames river path but that would boring. Not using the Thames in London would be 100% impossible because London has very little unused land and a lot more city. I would say Birmingham is probably the largest city in Western Europe where a no roads mission is possible simply because of the unused land and abandoned parts.

I know you're wearing trainers so you can be light on your feet etc., but they don't give much in the way of protection from sharp objects or obstacles, like a pair of boots would. A good compromise to check out would be electricians safety trainers. They are light and flexible, but also have a composite material toe protection and a tough sole. Might be worth a look. the platinum/gold rule probably mostly exists so there is still enough incentive to not deviate too much from the line. "No roads etc" isn't really feasible 100% like he explained, as it's necessary to go a bit left and right. So how much should be acceptable? It doesn't really matter after all, but it typical Tom to put a score on this once again :-)

The original rules said he couldnt go more than 25 meters down a road. Adding a gold category means he doesn't instantly fail if he has to walk further than that. So it's almost like there already was a platinum category, he's just giving himself a little more leeway instead of platinum or nothing.

Having spent the first 20 odd years of my life growing up in south west Birmingham, it was cool to reminisce with you when seeing some of the places you went through here. The Hagley road, harborne, and of course Brindley place. Even the absolutely abhorrent Railway pub, was somewhere we used to go to drink as peppy 18 year olds going out in town for the first time

I joked to my partner that we should buy a border house so we could bump into straight line runners, but at 6:00 my house is on the starting map 😂 those odd little messy grass bits are all over the place by us. Ha - you even used the Harborne walkway railway - you could have followed that from Hagley road with very little changes to route! Calls the estates dodgy and drinks in the f’n Railway 😂 that’s the dodgiest place I’ve ever seen you go

So stoked for this. Now i just wanna see a "straight line" mission across England that uses the cities. Maybe a new style where you can deviate half a mile and still be in platinum. That could be interesting. But very very hard.

That seems extremely easy. Half a mile is a long way. I'd rather he just keep these series separate. They're both already great, there's no need to over complicate them.
