This gargantuan adventure reaches its climax 19 miles from the North Sea coast, and as if this mammoth 5th day hadn’t tested me enough, I was now perched on the edge of a private hunting estate watching men furiously wave flags on my line to the soundtrack of multiple shotgun blasts. With plenty of farmland and another terrible forest beyond that, this mission was far from over. Will I make it through and become the first person ever to cross England in a straight line? Make yourselves comfy and find out.
Some speech might be difficult to hear - use good speakers/headphones if possible and use the man made subtitles

This is a deep pull from history so indulge me, these are almost gone memories, but way back, when I was in the air cadets, when we were spending a long weekend hanging around a couple of hills in Shropshire, we basically hung around with our eyes wide open in the pitch black of night for like, a very long time, and every time we had to look at a map after that we used a red filter on our lights because it wouldn't destroy our night vision, which we had built up by hanging around in a bush for half an hour while corporal dipshit opined at length about Pamela Andersons' tits. And scary sheep rustlers, who if they found us, would execute us wth shotguns. Later that weekend, somebody threw me into a river. Something to do with wavelengths and cones and rods and that.

Every Geowizard video has a sentence that has surely never before been uttered in the history of humanity. #6 - "But my clumsiness attracted no attention; and after boldly crossing a field that had a horse in it, I went through fields 8, 9 and 10 despite a bad hedgerow, onto the main road and in that perfect invisibility cloak level of light, into the final field of the day, where the homely lights of the campervan beckoned me home."

@DECODEDVFX
@DECODEDVFX 14 күн бұрын
@@StuffandThings_ Hard but possible. I'd suggest using a line that starts in the North Farthing of the Shire, near the town of Scary. This line has several advantages. You'd immediately cross the Brandywine river, and enter Buckland. The old forest would be a nightmare to pass through but luckily this line only cuts across the top corner of the forest. After that, you have a passage through the barrow downs and onto the open moorland of Cardolan. This part will be incredibly easy as it's just hilly land with no human presence for 200 miles. You'd then have to cross the Bruinen and several smaller rivers entering Dunland, but this brings us to the hardest challenge of the trip - The Misty Mountains. Thankfully this line takes us through a part of the mountain range that looks quite passable. After the mountains we once again clip the very corner of a forest (in this case Fangorn) and that brings us to some lovely open grassland of the Wold. We can make good time here, as long as we avoid patrolling Rohirrim horsemen. After canoeing over the river Andiun, it's a hilly climb over the dangerous rocky crags of Emyn muil followed by another tricky section in the marshes of the dead. Finally this line takes us straight through Cirith Ungol. Provided you avoid being eaten by Shelob, it's a fairly straightforward walk to Mount Doom. Edit: fuck it. I'm making this into an animation.

Something you may wish to look into for future missions, if you should choose to do them, is satellite tasking. You can pay imaging satellite operators to capture images of areas of interest, and it's not that expensive these days - with 50cm resolution (sufficient to identify areas of felled trees) you'll typically pay about £10-20 per km^2, with a lot of operators offering minimum orders in the 1-5km^2 range. Their services are cheap because they use imaging satellite constellations in polar sun-synchronous orbits (SSO) to get coverage of the whole planet as it rotates on its axis, meaning they can just wait until the target area is under the flight path during daylight rather than needing to do any kind of active orbital adjustment (which quickly gets into six-figure-plus PoA territory). Most of these satellites have very short orbital periods, on the order of hours, so you can expect to get images back within a day. Could be invaluable for getting up-to-date views of areas where you expect trees to have fallen in recent bad weather events.

26:20 there is some irony there for me. Last week I was talking with a co-worker about this series and mentioned how the UK has it good with nearly 0 deadly animals and that cows were the most dangerous. The fact this line went past the most dangerous cows is hilarious. Also another weird fact is that new zealand has very few deadly animals. This surprised me considering how close it is to Australia. Anyways congrats Tom!

It does sound a bit like a tall tell or legend doesn't it. 200 years from now: "Little Timmy did I ever tell you the tale about GeorgeWizard? He was a man so steadfast and determined he walked everywhere in a straight line. I tell ya he was 10ft tall if he was an inch. So strong he'd stride through fallen timbers like you or I stride through grassy fields. He leapt the River Thames in a single stride despite there being a bridge not but 15m away. "

Congratulations on the baby as well even though I'm guessing he or she hasn't been born yet. You mentioned tweaking the line to make it silver. I don't see that as controversial. Your mission is to cross the country in a straight line. You used that line as a guide. So it would make sense that in the end, you can say that's the line you crossed it with. So, 100% you got silver. Good on ya, buddy. Sending love from Canada. All the best.

If I can guess as to the silver "line change" at the end - since your total deviation was less than 100m, by slightly adjusting the line by a few feet you can get it in "compliance" with a silver finish. I think that's an intellectually honest silver, as there's nothing that makes your chosen starting line more notable than the one 10 meters to the side of it.
