Wonders of Iceland: Gerðuberg Basalt Columns, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, West Iceland. Drone footage. 4K. 60 fps. Gerðuberg is a row of perfectly shaped hexagonal basalt columns that run along a cliff on the southern side of the Snӕfellsnes Peninsula, in west Iceland. The cliff on which the Gerðuberg columns reside is over a kilometre long, with columns between seven and 14 metres (23 to 46 feet) tall and up to one and half metres (five feet) wide. Many have compared the feature to a fortress wall.
The most unusual thing about Gerðuberg is how the columns are so geometrically symmetrical that they seem to be carved by hand. Such features are rare around Iceland and the rest of the world, but easily explained by science. During an eruption thousands of years ago, rivers of lava ran off the cliffs here, in very equal flows. The sea rapidly cooled them, causing them to take this unique and unusual shape.
Other places in Iceland that they can be found include Hofsós, in north Iceland, and from the river Hvíta on a rafting tour.
The Snӕfellsnes Peninsula is defined by a long range of volcanoes, with the Snӕfellsjökull glacier volcano being the most renowned. Lava flows like those that cause Gerðuberg have not occurred in the area for hundreds of years.

Iceland looks to be an amazing country, I wish I was younger to be able to vivid. These columns are similar to the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland. Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting formations! Looks like they topple over every so often from erosion. some are very symetrical in shape too! Amazing! I enjoyed watching!

This Icelandic site reminds me of Devils Postpile National Monument located in Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Nevada of California. Vertical columnar basalt are really interesting. Never got to explore this site when serving at NAS Keflavik in 1979-80. Impressive! PS - Thanks for the video!

We have small formations of Basalt here in Kelowna B.C. Canada, 20 minutes from my house. Little flowers growing between the cracks. Unfortunately a company, maybe landscaping, is tearing away at the columns. Sad it was very serene but now looks like a pile of rubble.

That's flood basalt, which I'm sure is common in Iceland. There are the same formations in Washington State and also British Columbia. Most of the B.C. formations are buried by glacial till, but you can see it plainly in places like Whistler.

They are rich in iron and magnesium and because of cooling so rapidly they form hexagonal. Not the sea at all.

What do you think of the conspiracy theory that these basalt columns are really one big old ancient giant tree? There's a good documentary here on KZfaq about it. Very interesting.
